Recruits?

Post by factman »

Isn't today the first day for early signing for both men and women? I have seen articles on other teams early signings , but nothing from either the BG men's or women's teams. Supposedly the women have three early signees but I haven't seen anything in the newspapers or on the official site.

The only BGSU mention I've seen about signings was a tweet from Ali Mann about it being signing day...although she could be in a choir and trying to discuss "singing day"

Only thing I saw was a tweet regarding both Calhoun and Crawford averaging over 18ppg, and last Falcons to finish year like that were Komives and Thurmond. Gives us something to shoot for along with Erger getting his career shooting percentage up over 20% this season.

Tisdale has announced that he is signing Sunday at 2:30, so I assume the university is holding their announcement until then.

I question how hard we recruit, and the product on the floor shows, lets look around at our roster...Jordan Crawford who has had a better career than expected was commited to a D2 school, Luke Kraus from what I remember came down to Bowling Green or stay home at Findlay and play, James Erger had no other D1 offer and played summer ball AFTER his senior year to be signed late by the staff..Desmond Rorie had no other offers..what were Chauncey Orr's other offers? I mean when half your roster is D2 caliber players THAT IS A PROBLEM...it is an even bigger problem when they start or get major minutes for you...does anyone else notice this? like Will Ferrell said in zoolander "I feel like I am taking crazy pills!!!!"

Oh we notice it. We have 2 players on scholarship who are 6'9" and didn't score 8ppg in high school. Like I've always said, the person who sold this staff on James Erger is the best salesperson in this country. Watch him in warmups, he doesn't even knock down the majority of those. Our staff has been intact for 3 years for a reason, and it isn't how well compensated they are. Who else in college hoops, has a female basketball operations person and does not use that position for a aspiring young coach. It's a total joke.

Craig Sealey is the epitome if whats wrong with this coaching staff and team. Ridiculous athlete, seems to have some touch-->has not developed at all and has never been given anywhere near a defined role to do so. Sometimes I forget he is a Jr now. It's been the same thing for him since day 1.

Saying Jordan Crawford has not developed from Freshman year tells me one thing. You don't like Jordan Crawford. His development is clear despite his weaknesses. Sealey on the other hand, hasn't. Nor has Clarke.

After mentioning the female operations situation I went back to look because the year we won the MAC I remember Orr having a Male DOBO, well he did indeed and that man is Dave Clarke who is now the Head Coach at Owens CC. Wouldn't you know it Owens CC has some players and surprise surprise Bowling Green is not on their list of schools they are considering (atleast according to their yahoo pages)

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball ... nds-132702

If this is true to have a former BG staff member UNDER Orr and not be in the mix with these guys that is a HUGE issue and just goes to show the root of the problem. How hard does our current staff recruit? How well do they take advantage of the relationships they've made along the way (which with 2 former NBA players you would think is alot) to get players? How does someone like Clarke who apparently can get quality players to OWENS CC not get promoted on staff under Orr like in MOST college programs!!! I am not sure what way the current staff does thing, but it is certainly not the right way if we want to win

BGSUFalcon2010, we are acutely aware of the points you express so well.

Kraus,Orr, D. Brown, Larson, etc. all see big minutes while athletes like Clarke and Sealey either don't develop or don't have defined roles.

Not only do we have two 6-10 guys who scored 8ppg in HS, we have another verbal commitment from a 6-8 kid who averaged 9ppg as a junior. From the youtube video, I see that 6-3 Denny has a nice stroke, but otherwise looks a lot like another Luke Kraus.

Thus, the exasperation.

One wonders if Orr is passively waiting for the glory of God to shine down on the program rather than taking proactive, forward-thinking action.

Crawford has developed as a shooter/scorer since he got here (although his jumper is still terrible). Unfortunately as a leader of the offense he is largely the exact same player he was as a Freshman. To me he's a scoring first PG that has gotten consistently better at that aspect, but hasn't done anything to actually improve upon his real weakness. To me he's my least favorite type of modern age PG. I'd take a guy that can create for his teammates and run the offense effectively/efficiently over a guy like Crawford any day of the week.

FR: .394 FG% (.289 3FG%), 49 assists to 40 turnovers, 3.7 ppg (in only 13.5 mpg)
SO: .415 FG% (.299 3FG%), 132 assists to 70 turnovers, 7.8 ppg (in 24.8 mpg)
JR: .451 FG% (.319 3FG%), 153 assists to 110 turnovers, 11.3 ppg (in 31.3 mpg)
SR (3 games): .413 FG% (.368 3FG%), 14 assists to 13 turnovers, 18.0 ppg (in 38.3 mpg)

This year's sample is too small to really draw any conclusions from but thought I'd throw it in there just to show what we know so far. The single most irritating thing to me with Crawford (aside from his penchant for turnovers) is that he has REALLY not developed any consistency to his game. He has always been, and still seems to be based on early returns this year, a guy that can explode and take over a game one night only to be so very terrible he costs you the game the next night. You cannot win consistently when your primary ball handler (and only threat at guard) is so up/down as a player...especially when your other top player is equally as erratic.

Crawford has obviously developed as a scorer in his time at BG. His shooting percentage both overall and from 3 have trended upward. But it's really irritating that he continues to turn it over at an absurd clip and you still have no idea what to expect from him on a night to night basis. I don't entirely blame him entirely for that though...Orr has never been able to develop players.
