What GC should do is, get in his car and drive to Ohio, then to Kent State, then to Akron, and meet with each of their AD's. Ask them "if you had to hire a men's basketball, coach who would it be?" and go with who they say and in five years we'll win a MAC Tournament and make the NCAA Tournament. Hunter, O'Shea and Groce have taken Ohio there, Waters, Heath and Christian have taken Kent State there (KSU had NEVER been to the NCAA prior to 1999 and has been there five times since!) and Dambrot has gotten Akron there a few times.

While a noble idea, do you really think any of these guys would give away information like that, there is a better chance those AD's will tell GC to hire you, me, or any one else on this board then a quality name that gets us where we want to be

Looking at the my list the last time we did this . . . I was like most AD's you'll find, some hits and a lot of misses.

-David Greer is still at Wayne State now 167-138
-Greg Kampe is still at Oakland now 470-333

-Steve Merfeld is an assistant at Creighton after a stop at Bradley as an assistant. He was at BG 10 years and is credited with bringing in both AD and Anthony Stacey. His website say he had 5 MAC FOYs in his time.

-John Groce is now the HC at Ohio U, obviously and Kent State hired my first choice Geno Ford.
Ford had more success than Groce has had, but OU is better than they were. Ford, obviously now at Bradley which I initially left out.

Mark Montgomery is now at Northern Illinois
Cuonzo Martin was hired at Missouri State and now Tennessee
Kenya Hunter is at Georgetown as an assistant
Reggie Rankin has been working for ESPN since 2007
Patrick Sandle is still at Pittsburgh
Jason Rabedeaux is interestingly enough a coach in the Japanese Basketball League
Jay Price will be on a staff fired at Illinois before the weekend is up
Melvin Watkins followed Mike Anderson to Arkansas
Pooh Williamson is now at Texas A&M
Lewis Preston is the head coach at Kennesaw State

Mike Leaf won his second national championship at Winona State
Rick Herdes is at Southern Indiana

Larry Hunter almost got into the Dance with a mediocre regular season
Pete Gillen is now 64 years young.

***Update***
I'm not calling for Coach Orr's head by any means. I think there's room for improvement and I don't think it's automatic that he doesn't come back. What I do worry about, is having a brand new building that is not being fully optmized to capacity and used as the recruiting tool it should be.

My list has changed a little but there's still a few familiar names on it:
-Chris Jent, credited with fixing LeBron's jump shot and now an assistant at Ohio State. Rumors flying that Thad Matta has some nerve problems in back and legs and could be looking to get out in a few years. Jent needs to prove he can run his own show. Do it at BG (and I'm NOT a blowhard Buckeye fan)

-Bacari Alexander, there is no Tim Hardaway Jr, Trey Burke and wait until you see Mitch McGary in A2 in the fall without Mr. Alexander. ACE recruiter and up and coming guy in the coaching profession. Detroit open your doors to BG!

-Dwayne Stephens, I was a big Mark Montgomery fan until he left last year for a rebuilding project at NIU. I firmly believe no one gets into coaching to be a lifelong assistant. Stephens' time has come!

Those are the top of the list, others include:
-Greg Kampe, Oakland, he's still a BG guy and what a better place for him to get win 500 other than the Stroh
-Steve Merfeld, for us "younger" guys, he delivered two of the most dynamic players in the last 15 years to BG, something we have a shortage of with the last two staffs.
-Scotty Davenport, he would be in my top group if I felt there was a better chance that he would leave. Head Coach at Bellarmine(D-2 national champions) in Louisville, my new home. He'll be back in the national tournament again this year, recruits locally very well and is as good of a guy as you can find.

I may have more later, but that's a little to chew on for now!

I like BG alum Greg Kampe at Oakland...but I wish we had him 10 years ago.

I think it's got to be a mid-major assistant or a BCS assistant. I just don't see a successful mid major head coach leaving a job to take this one.

Seems interesting. Might be too tied into the area....if there is such a thing. His connections don't seem to go past Pittsburgh to the East or Detroit north (Is there anything past detroit)

Worth a look though as you said, and probably the type of guy we want.

Jim Tressel. He's an honest guy who runs a clean program. Who care's if he's a football coach. I'm sure he could run a blah offense with tenacious defense.

What about the Findlay coach? He's carried on the tradition that Niekamp had and brings in some great recruits for a D-II school. Always a top 25 program, usually higher.
