Re: Buffalo game
I was one of the few and foolish souls sitting on the 50-yard line in the upper deck of the East side and let me tell you it was COLD!!!! I mean REAL COLD!!!!! That wind was brutal and unrelenting. As the game wore on the skies seemed to darken and by the half I was shaking like a leaf. Did I mention it was COLD? Looking from my vantage point on the East side I guessed there were around 3-4,000 in attendence. I was disappointed since the Crew website's seating guide showed probably 9-10,000 seats that were supposedly unavailable which I took to mean they had been sold. Being this was a BG home game in all but location it is possible those unavailable seats were reserved for BG season ticket holders, most of whom appeared to be no-shows. That is probably where the 11,000 plus number comes in.
As for the game it seemd the coaches left it pretty much in the hands of the defense. That was a good idea. Shilz made some god-awful throws followed by some beautiful ones. His decision making is an issue. Kind of reminds me of Brandon Weedon at times. The key play was the defensive holding penalty on Buffalo on that Shilz interception in the first quarter. That was a huge call and it went our way for a change.

Yes, inability to scramble. Buffalo was so convinced he wouldn't run that he walked into the end zone from 10 yards out. Matt does not have the ability to make plays with his feet. That much is certain. He has some upside but should have so much more at this stage of his career IMO.

My problem with Matt is he doesn't look much different than he did 20+ starts ago.
Re: Buffalo game
Just got back from the game. First off, ALWAYS nice to get a win. Second, the wind was just brutal today. Blowing strong and non-stop all game long and it made it feel way colder than it probably was. Third, nice facility overall. That would be one of the better stadiums in the MAC if it was a football stadium, but I still think Akron's is much better. Fourth, I was very unimpressed with this game being in Columbus and the turnout. Props to everyone who did go, but it was a very poor atmosphere and a very bland game as well. There were only a few thousand there tops. I heard DC's comment in the postgame say we'd never get that crowd at home and I was like are you serious??? If 4,000 showed up today at BG we'd have topped that today. That place was nowhere close to being half full as the attendance figure said (yeah, I know, probably tickets distributed). I wasn't a fan of a home game being moved to a neutral site, and after this, I am 100% against it in the future. If one of our other MAC opponents wants to move their home game to a neutral site or even right back to Crew Stadium, I will gladly go. But I am not in favor of us doing it again. I gave it a shot, and no thanks, not again. The ONLY thing I liked about this game being at Crew Stadium instead of The Doyt was the view from the upper deck. I am telling you, it's just like the view from Akron's upper deck, it's better than any single seat in the current setup at the Doyt. You can see everything develop no matter where they are on the field. I would love an upper deck section for BG's upcoming stadium project. Please, please put one in, even if we raze one side and rebuild just one side like that. I loved the win and loved the view from the upper deck, but that was it.
GO BG!!!
Re: Buffalo game
I thought the lower level on the side of BG's bench was pretty full. I personally enjoyed it a lot (besides the TERRIBLE bitter wind) and wouldn't be opposed to them trying something like this again. I was only able to make this game because my parents don't live too far from Columbus and it didn't take a whole day away from visiting my family for my Dad and I to attend. Wouldn't have been able to go if it were in BG.

Re: Buffalo game
We had a great time tailgating and watching the Falcons win #8. Yeah, that wind was every bit as brutal as any in BG...too bad we couldn't have gotten one more nice weather day.
BG D was a brick wall yesterday...UB ended with 197 total yards and 129 were earned in the 4th quarter. The O did enough to get the win. I am still a Schilz fan but he definitely has room for improvement. Good seeing everyone and it was a shorter ride home, which is always a plus.
Just sux the regular season is over already....I hate seeing football season ending. Sure we should go bowling and let's hope we get a good one.

Re: Buffalo game
At the beginning of the game it was pretty full on both sides. Of course the upper decks weren't but there were people up there. The only reason it started getting empty was because it was freezing. If this game were in BG we would have had a couple hundred people in the stands. My wife and I had a blast and we hope they continue to come to Columbus.

Re: Buffalo game
Had a good time at the game. I agree with most of the comments on here. For a third year starter, Schilz isn't where we need him to be to be a consistent threat. Makes me really appreciate what Harris and Jacobs did for our offense.
Would have liked to see a more full crowd, but I know the weather played a factor in that. I would be in favor of doing this again, but maybe earlier in the season, possibly for the MAC opener against either Ohio or Miami, with the condition that it is a two year deal so we each give up a home game. I know that scenerio will not happen and is probably a bad idea and know no one wants to give up home games. Bottom line is this, and I know I am preaching to the choir on this board, but if our entire fan base was as loyal as our season ticket holders and we put 20,000+ in Doyt Perry Stadium regardless of weather or time of year, these neutral site games would never even be discussed.
Finally, the Defense was beastly as always, and will be very attractive to bowl committees. If Schilz doesn't hand the ball to Buffalo deep in our end, we get another shutout yesterday. My wife was five points off in her prediction, she called 21-12. My call of 38-3 was way off.

Coach Clawson kind of confirmed my post in yesterday's postgame press conference...Rollo83 wrote:I don't care for Schilz' disposition either. Clawson trying to tell him something on the sidelines and the coach has to chase the QB to talk to him.
Schilz is terrible at making decisions...especially when he's under pressure. That screen pass that was intercepted is a classic example. By the end of his junior year as a third year starter, you should be able to trust your QB with the ball. I don't think Clawson does. That's why our play calling is so whack at times. They don't trust him to call a portion of the playbook. Sad.
“I thought in the first half he played really, really well, but in the second half, not so well,” Clawson said of Schilz, who connected on 14 of 21 passes for 196 yards in the first half. “He made the touchdown run with his feet, but for a third-year quarterback in your program to throw that interception on the screen — you just can’t make that play.“If you’re a quarterback playing with a lead, you just can’t make that throw.”

I don't think Schilz can't run....I think he prefers not to becaue he has so much...in some cases too much...faith in his arm. I think his biggest problem is that when he doesn't have a rhthym going he gets careless. That int he threw on the screen is a perfect example of that.
As I said...I think we can win the MAC with him....or to be more accurate, we're going to have to win the MAC with him next year. I don't think Johnson is any better and Knapke has never taken a snap.

^ This is the best description. Although I have no idea if any of the backups could or would be better. Backup quarterback is the best position in sports.

Re: Buffalo game
He has a good arm but he has crap for brains, and a 3-year starter should be better than that. You don't know what you're going to get from snap to snap and that needs to change next year. He's serviceable at this point, but I believe he's been more of a liability than an advantage this season. Its not all his fault, but it absolutely has to get better.Flipper wrote:I don't think Schilz can't run....I think he prefers not to becaue he has so much...in some cases too much...faith in his arm. More of a liability than an advantage. I agree with that. He has to improve for us to take the next step and win the MAC and in my opinion there has been very little improvement in 30+ starts. Hopefully it will all come together for a great SR season.

Re: Buffalo game
I'm sorry...I think you guys are being way too hard on him. He isn't perfect by any stretch, but I think he improved a bit this year with regards to throwing on the move...he isn't great at it, but he's better. He throws a nice ball...yesterday's windfest notwithstanding and most importantly, I thnk the team believes he can lead them. He looked farmre in synch with his WR's the last two games than he did the first ten...so there's hope for continued improvement there. I'd like to see him continue to get better throwing on the move and he needs to be a "on" for a full 60 even if it means he's only making a few throws here and there while we eat clock and run the ball.

Re: Buffalo game
Throwing the ball has never been his problem. Its his decision making. He had two picks Friday off throws he shouldn't have made, and had one negated off a penalty. He still can't read defenses properly and still doesn't look off receivers. Every D-1 QB should have a good arm, however its only about 25% of the equation. I like Matt and I want him to succeed, but there's a lot to be desired this year and much room for improvement.Flipper wrote:I'm sorry...I think you guys are being way too hard on him.
