Re: The Home Crowd
Not getting angry, just making a point that swearing is part of watching sports on many different levels. Not saying that is acceptable, just saying that people tend to swear when things don't go the way they want for their team. Numbers was the first thing we wanted to look at, and I feel that is our first bit of success. The number of students who have attended games has been great, and we assume it will get better now that football season is over. What we want to do is create a group of fans who work together at Falcon hockey games to cheer on the team. This would involve the student section at the head, seeing as we have the most energy at games, and then followed by the rest of the fans. Maybe we would be able to stop some of the swearing if more people took part in our traditional chants, which are all clean (except saying "jack-ass" when the other team heads to the penalty box). We want to work together, but all you are doing is saying how bad we are and how much work we need to do. At least we are saying something to get the team going. Everyone else just sits and says nothing. We need to find a way to work together and get everyone involved. This is what I am really asking for.
Re: The Home Crowd
I will never understand why there are so many complaints about "jackass". As far as I'm concerned, it's NOT cursing. "Jackass", according to my dictonary is 1: A male donkey or 2: A foolish or stupid person. If the chant was "asshole", I think it would be inappropriate. Ass is one of those 2way words that can be ok or not depending on the context. I always remember the words of George Carlin on this topic: "You can prick your finger, but don't finger your *****."
As inappropriate as the "bull****" chant may be (and I believe it IS inappropriate), it's not going to stop no matter how much we complain about it. The rest of us just need to come up with something better and LOUDER to overwhelm it when it starts.

Re: The Home Crowd
FWIW, the student section has been down a bit this year from the past two years... FYI.
I'd actually like to see more students get on THIS site... that's what I'd like to promote. Any ideas on how to do that? I'd like to see the newspaper page the students use for the other team's intro be sponsored by AZZ.

Well said toodpav...I like to see the promotion of the alma mater as well...
At UofM the band plays over the profanity, ask the band to start playing over it, this way everyone is happy...

Re: The Home Crowd
The band is only at half the games the way it is, I doubt that would work. As far as the newspapers, I would really like to see other fans participate. Students have been doing a great job of putting them out and shouting "Who's he? Nobody!" I would like to see more of the arena take part in this chant, especially because it is a traditional chant that was started long ago. Would also like to hear a lot more people say "That's debatable, they still suck!" after the other team gets out of the box. These are both clean chants that I hope the entire arena picks up on eventually.
Re: The Home Crowd
If you want the whole arena to take part in the "Who's he?" chant I would suggest getting enough newspapers to spread around the entire arena. Put a stack in each section with a note on it to pass the papers around for the chant. It was done in the past and worked out really well. When we gave you that stack of newspapers a few weeks back that's what we thought that you were going to do with them...Falcon Hockey Fan wrote:The band is only at half the games the way it is, I doubt that would work. I'm going to make one suggestion to the students. I know you're probably tired of hearing, "Well, back when I was in school...", but, back when I was in school
we had two guys who were the leaders of Section A. These guys were awesome! Every game they had new and clever chants and cheers for the section. They would type up the "Section A Screamer" and pass it out to the whole section. The cheers would be right there and they would start them. They were our leaders, and dang clever writers too. Maybe you guys need to find a couple of "leaders". That would make it easier and more organized. Yes, I was in school from '82 to '86, and yes, it was an awesome time to be a Falcon Hockey fan. It was and can be again. You guys are going in the right direction with the reintroduction of the "Bleacher Creatures". Keep it up!

"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

We do have leaders, they are called the Bleacher Creatures, I'm sure you have heard of them. "Like" them on Facebook to keep up with what they are doing: http://www.facebook.com/thebleachercreatures?ref=hl. We are working on creating that leadership and it is a work in progress. Nothing can happen overnight. Half of the student section and most of the fans don't even know who we are, which is why we are trying to get our name around and do what we can to promote Bowling Green Hockey. Personally, I have seen positive student attendance at hockey games, and that is the first thing we wanted to work on. Now we will take it a step further, but it is going to take a little bit of time. We know what we want to do, it is just a process.

Also, as far as the newspapers, promotions is helping out a lot with that. Every home game, they have been placing newspapers in the first three or four rows around the entire arena. Obviously that doesn't mean everyone gets one, but again, it is a work in progress. What we want to see is people start to bring there own. It would be the greatest thing ever to see every single person in the arena holding up a newspaper. It isn't going to happen overnight, but we are working on it.

Re: The Home Crowd
As falcons86 said have some sort of newsletter with chants in it. During our undergrad time a friend of mine was doing a newsletter that had chants, write ups about recent games, fun stuff like crosswords or word searches, info on players from both team, including a player from the other team to "target" and lots of other different stuff like that. Something to consider doing

Re: The Home Crowd
A few years ago somebody had printed out a bunch of these for the students at the hockey game. Needless to say, 90% of the students tossed the paper. Why? The establishment can't tell us what to do. Part of that was because it was the person passing these out worked for athletics. If it was a student group, the response might have been a little more positive. Unfortunately, this was at the same time that athletics was trying to force all sorts of "traditions" on all sports and the students were just fed up with it.BGFalconfromCincy wrote:As falcons86 said have some sort of newsletter with chants in it. Re: The Home Crowd
I hate to be the negative one, but in all honesty I hope the team is putting as much thought into their game as the fans are. I have no doubt that they are, I just hope we see some magic soon.

Re: The Home Crowd
I remember those "traditions" cards they did a few years back that were stupid, don't remember them being at hockey though, just football. My friend who did the newsletter didn't work for athletes and wasn't forcing new chants or any other new stuff on anyone, just listed chants that were already being done like the goal chant, whose he nobody, penalty one, and so onfootballguy51 wrote:A few years ago somebody had printed out a bunch of these for the students at the hockey game. Really like the support, if anyone has any other ideas we would love to hear them. Love the idea and we will see what we can do about it.
