UMass Back to FCS?

Post by jpfalcon09 »

Apparently UMass is holding a meeting today to determine whether or not a move back to FCS is the best course for the football program. Obviously if this happens, the MAC will be back to 12 teams and I'm sure schedules will need to be amended for 2013.

After one season? Everybody knew they would get rolled in their first season. Did they lose a bunch of money? Or, are they looking at schools like UTSA and asking why they couldn't have done better?

Apparently it was requested by the faculty due to budget issues. Most of the faculty was against the FBS move anyways, I suppose the 1-11 season didn't change many of their minds. Either way, I doubt UMass is around the FBS much longer.

I'm assuming the Big East was eventually going to be their goal for all sports. Soon, the Big East isn't going to even exist.

Their basketball program is in the A-10. If their budget issues are that serious, maybe they see it as sensible to just stay in the A-10 for basketball (the A-10 might get the non-football schools that are currently in the Big East anyway) and go back to FCS for football. The A-10 deal is going to give them a pretty good amount of money, especially if the seven BIg East schools join for basketball.

The faculty can't vote to get rid of FBS football. All they can do is send their vote to the president and or chancellor for them to review. Basically it's like kids telling their parents they don't want broccoli and the parents listening and then saying, eat it.

Let them go. I'm tired of having a 13th team and an unbalanced schedule.

Yep. I never agreed with the move to bring them in to begin with.

What's kind of odd is they play all their games for now in Gillette Stadium until their on campus stadium is ready for FBS level crowds, but even then they still are contracted to play 4 games a year at Gillette through 2016. Considering they will have at most 6 home games a year, that plan is basically renovating their home stadium just to abandon it for a pro stadium that is almost two hours away. Talk about a way to alienate your students, alums, and fans all in one. You need consistency. IMO if they want to make things far easier, make all home games played at their campus stadium. Take whatever penalty is incurred to scratch the deal with with Gillette or alter it to do 1 game a year at Gillette to appeal to the Boston area alums and fans. The plan they have is not a good idea or a sustainable one going into the future.

I think you are right on point here. Those things always interest me. I can somewhat get their reasoning (Bigger city, alumni presence) but it seems to make more sense to put a stadium right in the heart of campus for the students and alumni who want to return. You are not building long term alumni support by frustrating your current students and making it difficult for them to go to games. I love where Michigans stadium is, if I remember correctly. OSU too, to an extent. I wonder if we could plop ours right on Anderson Arena :).
