From the game

Post by bacn3 »

First off great win guys. One heck of a hockey game 14th largest crowd ever!! Second when you win hockey games as we have, people that don't really know much about the game start coming to games... that is fine I like that. However I don't like it when those people yell at our players for doing what they are supposed to do. For example, when we are on the power play we can't just shot the puck all the time. When there's a defender in front, he will hit the ice, the puck will be blocked and fall back out of the zone, then we have to set up all over again. So... if we are passing a lot on a power play it is because we are trying to find a hole in the D not because we aren’t a good power play unit!!

Also, I was very upset when someone behind me told Coach to take out Jonathan Sigalet because of his play. There was a two on one break for them, Jonathan was the only one back and the guy with the puck was along the boards. Jonathan took the pass lane and let the guy shot the puck... right into Jordan's chest. The fan behind me was very upset at Jonathan and yelled for him to be pulled out of the game. Jonathan is one of the best defensemen in the league he knows what he is doing, had he took the shooter the pass would have been wide open on the blind side of Jordan and the probably would have scored.

Please by all means come to the games, I love the ice arena packed like that. But please when you feel like yelling at the team, take a deep breath, and think... there is probably a reason for all of this.

In a two on one, the goalie takes the shooter, the defenseman plays the pass. That way if the goalie makes the stop, there's no worry with the rebound. Also, if Jonathan goes to the puck on that play, he's giving the shooter a screen (blocking Jordan's view).

The fan behind you was obviously an idiot...I didn't know Stan Joplin liked hockey
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

I was mad when at the end of the game, people kept wanting us to be agressive and crash the net. When you got a 3 goal lead, you just maintain the lead, keep the puck in your opponents zone, and make sure you don't give up a breakaway.

Unfortunately, due to our recent lack of winning, a lot of hockey knowledge has been lost by our fan base. Once the winning becomes regular and crowds like this become a norm the hockey knowledge will come back. It's up to those who know to educate those who don't. Don't get mad but take the time to explain what was going on. Especially on the way Lil' Siggy handled the break away. He's not just one of the best in the league, he's one of the best in the country. He'll be entering the draft this year and if we have him two more years we'll be lucky. Think of him as the current Rob Blake....he's that good! We're pretty confident that we'll still have him next year, but beyond that.....

Well, you'd have to combine Jonathan's smarts with Sitko's hits and nobody-on-this-team's heavy shot to get another Rob Blake. (IMHO)

Blake was just a skinny, tall kid when he came to BG. He didn't become all that noticeable on the ice until his junior year when he became incredibly dominant. I believe that Jonathan has similar capabilities to go along with better skating. He may not become the heavy hitter that Blake was but I think he has the ability to become just as prolific of a scorer. Time will tell.

The thing about Jonathan, is that he's almost always in the place he's supposed to be. He has a great feeling for the game... one of the best i've seen. Maybe that is due to growing up with Jordan, maybe not, but wow he is one great player, and i hope i get to watch him play here at bg for a few more years.

We need to be carefull not to lable new fans as 'idiots', just because they lack knowledge of the game as through as you and I appear to have. At some point in time, we all had to be taught how to play the game, or how to appreciate it's finer points from a fan's perspective. If I may be so bold, I'd suggest that you ought to consider it your duty to seek out a 'newbie' at each game, and educate him. I know from personal experience that it can be done, if handled with some tact...give it a try, it's fun.

I'm not saying they're idiots, but if you know that you don't know anything about the game (that looks weird), then don't yell at our players for doing their job. If i do hear it next game i will say something
