Not sure what to make of this. He deserves an extension but if he wins the Mac east next year he probably has 2-3 bcs job offers.. Wonder what the buyout is.. I just see Dc as a climber much like urban or any other successful Mac coach

He's probably out of here sooner rather than later, but this is a good thing. The man deserves a raise, the timing will help nail down recruits for this year (come to BG...I'll be here for all five years you're here.. unless you graduate in four)and I assume it means a bigger buyout for the department if he leaves in a year or two. Equally exciting is the mention of new Field Turf for the indoor facility and the renovations to the Doyt. If they're putting language like that into a PR...it seems like the process is moving along to the point where we might hear something sooner than we thought

It gives some stability and looks good to the recruits, but that's about it. I'd put the over/under at two years before he's gone to a BCS program. I believe Petersen in Utah State signed a similar deal this year and left about a month later.

I agree. There is no negative here. Even if it's just a "if I don't get a better job I will be head coach until 2018" contract it is good for future planning. I think what's interesting is Mike Elko reportedly was offered the DC job at Marshall and interviewed at Ga Tech. If we are in a "you are the next guy up" situation, how does this extension play into that? Probably not at all because it's likely an "if...then" scenario. But just a thought.

Re: speculation that Elko is coach-in-waiting or something to the effect ... I'm not sure I buy it. Not that he doesn't deserve it, but I don't think GC thinks that way. If he did, Jennifer Roos would have been the WBB head coach the day Curt Miller announced his departure for IU. GC may have Elko in mind as a very good candidate for eventual head coach, but I assume he would make him go through the formal interview process of every other candidate, just as Roos did, in the situation that Clawson departs for a bigger school.
And if I have my way, that doesn't happen for a very very very very very long time. Clawson is a fantastic head coach. Very deserving of a contract extension.

Do they have to do that because it's a state job?
Beyond not taking the Marshall job, and us having the best defense I can remember BG having in recent memory, the rest is just speculation.

In short, yes. We have to formally post the job in several national job search listings, wait a designated period of time to receive applications (I think the minimum is 1-2 weeks), ensure we've followed all EEO rules, screen the applications, conduct phone interviews, pare the list down, conduct in-person interviews, and then make a selection. Even if you know who you want, you cannot simply hire somebody without going through the process. Besides, you may end up finding the perfect applicant by opening up the search.

The State of Ohio requires a position to be posted for three business days. It does not have to be anything more than a piece of paper on the bulletin board outside of the HR Office with the title of the job and job description.

The university will usually follow the process that footballguy51 describes for non-coaching positions.

Well, the good news is that a buyout would only apply if something happened to where BG fired him before the contract was up. It's my understanding that if he left of his own accord for a "better" job, he'd forfeit the rest of the contract with BG.

This is a good move for the PROGRAM. Even if Clawson does leave soon, which I think he will. It shows another coach we are committed to paying our coaches, keeping our facilities at the top of our conference and are willing to commit to a coach.

Plus, Clawson deserved it.

As far as Elko...I heard he also received a significant raise and extension.

That is what I was thinking. I was very confused as to why we would have to pay him extra money if he decides to bail on his contract.

Similar to the Orr situation. WE would have to buy out his final year only if we end up firing him before it expires.
