Oddly enough, for all the frustrating losses this year, the team is one game under .500 in conference. Mix of weak MAC and a lot of close games.

I'm PO'd. Holmes only played 26 minutes and LaMonte didn't wrestle any chicks.

Hmm. Good question. The Bobby Nichols teams for the Toledo Dildos (60's, 70's, 80's) were some of the most honky-laden teams anywhere (outside of hockey and golf). They were alright though. They won games by played good, hard, fundamental basketball. They did have the one black player who later went on to be the unsuccessful coach and feuded with Dakich. Later, they had Shon Smith and some 5-8 kid out of KY who averaged about 8ppg in HS. And then there was Jim Swaney. He was actually white, but he had that giant, silly-ass curly jet-black 'fro that I suspect is part of the reason why afros soon after became very uncommon among African Americans. Swaney ruined 'fros for them and everybody else.

Dildos had other guys named Mitch Seaman, Jay Lehman, and Dick Miller. And then there was a guy named Jay Gast - he was pretty good. One year, they had guys named Reiser, Reiker, and Reiger on the same roster. Aaaaah. Dildo basketball, a storied history indeed!

Just a little MAC history for ya. :)
UT had Harvey Knuckles..a 6-7 African American forward from Wisconsin who was actually good enough to be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round by some NBA team. Coach Bobby Nichols was supposed to have said soemthing unpleasant to a black player from Toledo....the legend had it that no black player from Toledo would go to UT while he was there. I also heard Nichols was a bit of a drinker

There were also rumors that it was Jim McDonald that carried Bobby Nichols and the program. Nichols himself was milquetoast. After Toldeo, McDonald went on to bring the Kent State program out of the doldrums and into success.

Toledo was able to get to the Sweet 16 in 1979 with some of the players above mentioned. Over 9000 in attendance at most home games for a three year stretch. All we BG fans could do was sit back and hope our turn would come. Maybe next year!?

Holmes played 26 minutes because Black was in foul trouble. If Western is the 3rd best team in the MAC, then this is the worst the MAC has ever been. BG shot the ball really well 2nd half, defended well most of the night, but could have blown them off the floor had they rebounded better. All and all a solid performance, which included some of the ugliest shots I've seen. The Kraus 10 footer early, Clarke 3 off side of board to himself for a layup, and my favorite shot of the year, Erger sweeping left handed hook off the side board. That play was just awesome.

And how about this... As crappy as we all know this team is, we are currently the #4 seed for the MAC tournament. :o That gets us into the third round without even playing a game. Win two MAC tournament games and we go dancing. How embarrassing would that be? What does that say about how bad the MAC is this year?

The one thing I've gathered from watching BG this year is that other than OU/Akron the MAC is BRUTALLY bad. We've won a couple games this year where I thought we played absolutely awful. Even last night, we played decent, but WMU looked like garbage. KSU & EMU both looked like total garbage when we played them as well.

This MAC is a shell of what it once was. OU & Akron though both seem to be pretty legit. I'd always love to see BG end up in the dance, but if we don't make it (and I'm quite certain we won't) I hope to god one of those two teams get in. Either of them could pull an upset or two in the dance...the rest of the conference is 15-16 seed worthy.

Recalling last year when OU nipped Akron in the MAC Tournament and then went to the Sweet 16 - - - With a little luck, it could have been Akron last year and was a shame they didn't get in. This year I think they both go. If not one of them could make a run in the NIT.

And 2 games against DII teams. And a game against NIU. Effectively we are 4 games under .500. :/

OU you completely blown its chance at an at large bid. Akron, however, hasn't quite yet.

The best scenario for the MAC is to OU to win the MAC tournament and for Akron to get the at large.

Nobody else in the MAC will even get a whiff of the NIT. This conference flat out sucks this year.

Ohio's loss hurts Akron too. A slip up anywhere by Akron and they have to win the tournament.

There are only 3 teams over .500 within the MAC. Only 4 teams over .500 for the season! Wow, that is horrific.

The only MAC team that will make the NCAA tournament will be the tournament winner. There will not be a second team added from the MAC. That has been true down thru the years and nothing will change this year. There have been seasons when BG won the MAC regular season title and then lost in the MAC tournament. They were never added to the field even when they had an excellent non-conference record. That is why the MAC tournament does nothing for the conference expect bring the championship game onto ESPN. Too often the tournament results in an upset winner so the MAC often ends up with the third or fourth best team making the NCAA field as a 13 or 14 seed. That team loses in the first round and reinforces the image most people have of the conference. A one and done league. Ohio U was a pleasant exception to that trend once it made the tournament. Let us hope either Akron or Ohio win the tournament title else it could be embarassing to have any of the other teams represent the MAC, including BG.

I think OU has an outside chance of breaking in if they do not win the Mac Tourney simply due to the fact they have everyone back from last year's team that won two NCAA games. That is strong evidence. They have proven capable of being competitive given a 9-12 seed and, the committee could give them the nod based on that evidence.
Only thing missing is last year's coach, which has hurt as they seem to be missing something they had last year. But what the heck crazy things happen in March. So it will be interesting to see how it all pans out. Being a MAC fan for years, I have learned not to get too excited knowing the teams in the league are not capable of winning more than two games, but when that happens it is so fun.
BAll State with Paris McCurdy and Co. and Kent with Trevor Huffman/A Gates were the only two I thought had the size etc to get to the Final Four.
