Look, I'm not going to say that what Ali did was justifiable, but to say she never deserves to ever coach again because she was romantically linked to a trainer, student manager, or practice team member is mean-spirited and over the top.

Ali was, and still is one of my favorite bg athletes of all time. It was a severe error in judgment, but in the long run I think she'll be better for it. Its a victimless situation, not even a crime and certainly not one like stealing credit cards or invading homes for drugs.
Do we know this to be the case and that it wasn't a student athlete? Regardless, it was someone in the program who was beneath her in the program structure, so it is HIGHLY inappropriate.

If it was a student athlete, her coaching career is OVER. There won't be a school or university that will hire her.
All that is known is that is was a student in the program. Was not said if it was a student athlete, student trainer, student manager, or student practice player.

I agree if it was a student athlete see won't coach at the college level ever again
The issue is so sensitive because it was with a current player. Ask anyne close to the team! Sad story, peers had to bring this to the coaches attention. I don't know what player it is, doesn't matter. All the other stuff was smoke screen to lead people to believe it could be a practice player, which by the way are all men. This was very serious and handled the best it could be.

Obviousky...the University doesn't want to confirm/deny a same sex relationship because they don't wish to "out" anyone or create a lot of speculation about the team and it's members.

Is it asking too much to respect that concept?
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.

It is not asking too much to respect that concept, and I understand your reasoning, if it is only about protecting the players. However, if I was a student trainer, student manager, or a male practice player, I would not want my name (or group title in this case) listed as someone who was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a coach. There is no reason to create any type of speculation that falls on them either, especially if it is true that the relationship was with a player as was stated on this board as fact.

I agree with this. If, in fact, it turns out that this was a student and the university deliberately did this as a smoke screen -- then shame on them for smearing the good names of a lot of innocent folks unnecessarily all on altar of political correctness.

Yes, I realize they're in a jam and there are also privacy concerns to deal with as well...but I do believe some of this is going to be well beyond the university's control at some point no matter what they do. So why put out a lie that hurts innocent people?

As for Mann: I'm so disappointed in her for this terrible lack of judgment. You can do many things wrong as an educator in this world and be given a second chance, but having a sexual relationship with a student (even one of age) is not one of them.

You simply cannot break that barrier of trust and authority -- ever. When you do, your reputation is gone forever.

I hope she's learned from this and will be able to find a career that makes her as happy as coaching/teaching did.

Agreed. Once Flipper invented the new word "obviousky", there was no longer a purpose here (I'm not sure there ever was).

Now, I just need to think of a definition for "obviousky".
