1) In pure speed, Clarke beats Crawford decisively. If you had them race down the floor, I'd bet that Clarke would beat Crawford by 2 steps. I really don't think Crawford is exceptionally quick for a guy his size. The MAC has had many, many small players that were much quicker. Crawford's quickness is a overrated. Because he's tiny 5-6, he looks a bit quicker than he actually is. Clarke is faster on his cuts off the ball and has shown the ability to blow to the basket in a blink. That's what I see.

2) This is the post game with coach Orr from last night. This was the most empty-headed sports interview I've ever heard. He's practically resigned to losing.

"We just gotta make baskets." So you play your 30% shooting guard who can't put the ball on the floor to create. You continue to recruit guys who can't score in high school. You play your best athlete 5 minutes, he scores 7 points and grabs 3 rebounds. Lou is lost.

Is that a product of not having anyone else who can score or Crawford being bad or both?

I noticed in the first half that Holmes was absolutely furious after being replaced by Black. He left coach Orr hanging on a low five, suggesting that he's pissed at Orr over playing time. Holmes was visibly annoyed at other points in the game when not playing. When he does play, he dominates. He SHOULD be pissed over playing time, and if Orr returns as coach next year, Holmes SHOULD transfer.

Globe, the only reason Black is a decent position defender is that a) he has decent body weight, 2) he doesn't need to be athletic to do this. Holmes' presence underneath gives us opportunities at the ball that we can't even imagine with Black. Whatever Holmes gives up in position defense he gives back 10x with his overall skills. Holmes should be on the floor 35mpg with Black spelling him occasionally.

COrr is major a defensive liability. As a 6-3 small forward, he doesn't jump, isn't long, and isn't quick. Kent took advantage of mismatches against him. He's a sitting duck. I'll admit the COrr does have a very high basketball IQ. VERY INTELLIGENT PLAYER. He does NOT have D1 athleticism.

I'm always amazed by Clarke's court vision and spontaneity when on the floor. So much better than Crawford. Also, the ball distribution is much better as well. With Crawford's shitty decision making and shot selection, he's like a black hole for the team at point guard. And, his speed and quickness is average for MAC guards. His lateral mobility can be impressive, but Clarke gets from point A to point B much, MUCH faster than Crawford in half court sets.

Concerning Parker...that kid has game. Give him grace on the stat line. He's a very good athlete with an all-around game.

I continue to be completely baffled by Sealey's lack of playing time.
Your take on Clarke vs Crawford is in my opinion completely wrong. Clarke gets from point A to point B faster. no way.
Also, Parker is just a body at this point.
And in conclusion, I do want Holmes on the court way more often then Black, I actually want them playing together. Its not an either or situation. Or with another coach it wouldn't be.
Clarke may not be quicker than Crawford, but he is definitely really quick. If only his ball handling could keep up with the rest of his body. Still, I think I saw him break down a defense in a half court set for an easy layup more in the OU game than I have the other guards on this team all year combined. Crawford is quick, but it really has no value because he has no jump shot and can't pass worth damn. He's either a black hole with the ball or a turnover machine. Of course Clarke is a turnover machine as well...that seems pretty consistent with Coach Orr's teams...his guards have been beyond awful since he was hired.

Coach Orr is beyond awful. I hope to god we're not stuck watching him "lead" next year's squad. And to think...people have been giving me funny looks all year when I boo him in introductions every game.
The crawford hate is borderline craziness. He can't pass but he had eight assists. He can't shoot but he shoots in the 43% area for a guard. Is he out of control and does he lack poor judgment, yeah.

Hilarious that you boo him.

Crawford is what he is. A very active undersized 1 who can score, defend and handle the ball, isn't a great floor general but is adequate. I bet that other guards hate guarding him and having him guard them more then anyone else in the league. I also bet other bigs drool over him. In regards to turnovers, while he is to blame there were several times where the guy last night just didn't move to where he should have moved and Crawford got caught up in the air and made a bad pass, because there was no other pass to make. Is that turnover on Crawford or on the other player for moving into the defense instead of getting adequate spacing....probably both.

If you're gonna make baskets, you have to get shots.

Kraus and COrr don't have the ability to get open shots. Neither are mobile enough off the ball to get open, and Crawford would distribute the ball well enough even if they did. For someone who can penetrate, Kraus can only give you 25% 3-point shooting. COrr just isn't athletic or strong enough to take Kent's forwards to the hole. Black rarely gets open as well, and when he does get the ball, he isn't quick enough to make his move before defenders collapse.

Not for his size. Not for players under 6'. He changes directions well laterally. He doesn't run opposing guards ragged.

I did not see last night's game, so I cannot speak to it specifically.

But what I have seen with Crawford is that the games where he gets a lot of assists he also ends up with a ton of turnovers. This is because he is not a good decision maker, crisp passer. Sometimes he'll become a black hole and just shoot (as apparently was the case last night), but oftentimes he attempts a LOT of high risk/high reward passes. What you end up with is a typical stat line for him of 5-6 assists, but they're accompanied by 4-5 turnovers. To me that is NOT a trait of a good passer. I oftentimes find myself saying during a game, "That was a NICE pass." Then 2 possessions later, "What the hell was he thinking!?" The bottom line is that a good passing PG either A) knows when not to make those passes, and/or B) makes them more crisply so they get through the defense at a much higher rate than Crawford.

As for saying he can't shoot, I stand by it. He has a weak jump shot. He always has. He improved as a scorer over the years by taking less jumpers. This year he's been a jump shooting machine and is shooting only about 38% from the field and 31% from 3. Those are pretty bad numbers...especially for a guy that has taken 50 more shot attempts than the next highest guy.

I really think the only fear with opposing players/teams with regard to Crawford is whether they're going to have to face the hot version of him. As much as I dislike him, he is still insanely inconsistent...but when he's on he's VERY VERY GOOD. He is as streak of a jump shooter as you'll find, but when they start dropping he's very tough to defend. I don't think anybody fears him on his averages, just whether or not they have to face that version.

My analysis on Crawford is that he's very undersized, a horrible decison maker/floor general (yes horrible, not at all adequate, IMO). He can score, but his jump shot is inconsistent to the point of bad, and his size is a real limitation in the half court. He's a great finisher on the break, but needs to be more willing to pass the ball on the break when he has help. He's an adequate defender...gets some steals with his quicks, but again his size is a liability...he's typically not asked with defending the opposition's best guard either as Mr. Orr seems to think Luke Kraus is a god of on the ball defense (he's not, he sucks too). I do think Jordon is quick enough to get to the point on the floor he wants to get to, I just think his size/lack of passing ability limit how useful that skill is. He has a very tough time getting open looks inside the arc simply due to his size. I also think Crawford is borderline narcissistic. He has a personalized plate of his own name on his car, and he refuses to involve teammates down the stretch in most close games. Against OU Calhoun single handedly kept us in the game, but down the stretch Jordon tried to be Jordon and twice dribbled until he fell down. Yeah, he's hit some big shots for BG, but like Kobe it's because he insists on taking all of them, and doesn't hit a high enough % to justify that.

In the end I'll be quite happy to see Crawford go. Not because I think we have a better option available (we don't), but because I cannot stand watching a player of his style thinking he's god's gift to basketball. He oftentimes doesn't try to create for anybody but himself, and when he does he turns it over nearly as often as he assists his teammates.

I love how the first 30 seconds of that interview are thanking god. Ugh...I don't know why I even clicked to listen, he's got about as much personality as my shoe. And probably about the same amount of basketball insight as well.

Strange, because he never even gives post game interviews after home games. It's always Twigg or Stone talking in the postgame show.

Probably a function of two things. First, the players on the court at that time are guys who cant shoot/score because Orr has no clue who his best players are. And two, Crawford being incredibly selfish and trying to do everything himself at the end of the game. He did the same thing againt OU on Saturday and turned it over three straight possessions.

I have seen way too many fast breaks over the years where he refuses to pass and instead forces up a crazy layup to not think he's selfish.

I've seen far too many games where he insists on pounding the ball into the floor for the last possession of both halves and then shooting something crazy himself.

I think he's the typical Kobe type player that honestly thinks he's the only one on the team capable of making a shot down the stretch and insists he take all shots in those situations. I find it hard to blame him for how bad this team is just because the entire team is s**t. But on an individual level there are few things I hate more than a PG that plays the way Crawford does. I'll be quite happy to see him gone.

I wish we had say Brandon Pardon on the staff to help develop Jehvon Clarke. I agree with the earlier comments on him and feel that if he was developed he could be an all-league type guard.

I feel the similar about Holmes. His natural ability and instinct could really go a long way but he needs to be developed and polished. I know last night Todd Walker chided him for his attitude coming off the court when he thought he was fouled and I remember him storming off the court following the MSU loss, but man that type of fire and intensity is missing on this team. There was no close out killer instinct on the court last night in Kent and a winnable game got away.
