Sue, I do remember CMU making a run from the #5 spot last year to nearly pull off the impossible. That was a very impressive run, but you have to admit, winning 5 games in 8 days to win the auto bid is a grueling task for any team. Usually fatigue will catch up with a team by the final game. I remember one year Syracuse's men won the Big East from the #8 or #9 spot winning 4 or 5 games on consecutive days (including a 6OT marathon against Connecticut in the semis) but runs like that are extremely rare.

Besides, when was the last time either MAC tournament was won by a team from outside the #1 or #2 seed? Here's what I recall on the women's side

2005 - BG (#1)
2006 - BG (#1)
2007 - BG (#1)
2008 - Miami (#2) - #1 BG eliminated by #4 Ohio in the semis
2009 - Ball State (#2) - #1 BG eliminated by #2 Ball State in the finals (both teams should've been dancing as we got mercilessly jobbed by the committee at 28-4)
2010 - BG (#1)
2011 - BG (#2) - #1 Toledo eliminated by #4 Eastern Michigan in the semis
2012 - Eastern Michigan (#2) - #1 BG eliminated by #5 Central Michigan in the semis
2013 - ???

So basically history tells us, if you're not #1 or #2, you're not going to win. That being said, there's not a great difference between #2 and #6 this year, so you could have a team catch fire and win it. I say #2 and not #1 because Toledo is clearly the team to beat, and honestly they might have a tourney bid already locked. Hopefully somebody takes the scuds out and the MAC finally gets 2 teams in like we should have had in 2009, the year that Ball State obliterated Tennessee.

EDIT: Actually I stand corrected on UT...they are 26-2, RPI 45, SOS 221. I didn't realize their SOS was so bad, that might be enough to keep them out with a MAC tourney defeat. If they lose, they'll be sweating big time on Selection Monday.

The other thing is with 10.5 players, fatigue will set in for the Falcons. It's hard to think that 10 gals can play 5 games in 8 days and be competitive all 5 days. We better hope that the long layover hurts the bye teams (as it did for BG last year) when the #5 team beat us.

However, maybe just getting past the first 2 will give us hope, or if Central stumbles tomorrow night......

What an ugly game!!!

BG went 10:20 without making a shot. Shooting 26% for the half. Numerous turnovers.

Yes exactly. Very painful to watch. Just ouch. Not making shots and a number of turnovers have made this a painful first half to watch. Let's hope they come out ready to play in the 2nd half. Opened the first half with a very slow start and it never really got any better for the rest of the 1st half.

51-43 BG gets the win over Kent State. Definitely not a good game by any means. Didn't really start playing somewhat well until 8 mins left in the second half.

Well, BG finishes 5th in the conference standings, thanks to CMU's 63-56 win over EMU. Ugh.

Akron's 77-60 win over Buffalo at least means that our horrible loss against WMU didn't cost us the East Division title and the #2 seed. Had we won at Akron that would've been enough though, since we would've had the tiebreaker on CMU and Ball State.

Looks like either BG faces Kent/Ohio on Saturday in round 1. The winner of WMU/EMU will likely be our 2nd opponent on Tuesday, followed by either CMU or BSU in the quarterfinals assuming we don't lose before then (which would be humiliating, IMO).

One game at a time now. We gave ourselves this road, so its time to traverse it.

Division winners are no longer guaranteed the #2 seeds. In this case Akron is #3. Ball State is #2. So that loss at WMU was huge because we would have been tied with Akron and would have won the tie breaker. Either way, 5 straight wins for a championship. First up, Kent.

I agree that the loss at WMU was huge. But, FWIW, we would not have won a 2-team tiebreaker with Akron had we beaten WMU. The first tiebreaker is head to head games, and BGSU and Akron split their two games.

The second tiebreaker between two teams from the same division (at least at the top of the division) is record within the division. Akron was 9-1 in games within the division, and BGSU was 7-3. The WMU game wouldn't have changed that.

HOWEVER, in the event of a 3-team tie between BGSU, UA and CMU -- OR a 4-team tie between those three teams and Ball State -- BG would have fared much better. So the WMU game was huge in that regard. One more win against ANYONE would very likely have given us a bye.

It's going to be a very difficult road, as BGSU would likely have to beat CMU and Toledo just to make it to the championship game. But, stranger things have happened, & I'll never count the BG women out at tournament time.

I agree threestooges, stranger things have indeed happened and it is always important to never count out the BG women at tournament time. Anxious to see how things play out.

Though we assume that BG should be favored over Kent, the old adage about how hard it is to beat the same team THREE times in a season could rear its ugly head...especially after another poor shooting night for the falcons on Wed. at KSU.
This shooting inconsistency is BG's achille's heel IMO. 8-[
