2013-2014 Coaching Candidates

Post by Globetrotter »

This is merely bait for a more educated coaching enthusiast to jump in and take over but here goes.

1. OSU coaches Jeff Boals and Chris Jent
2. MSU coaches Dane Fife
3. Michigan coach Bacari Alexander
4. BG Legend Dan Dakich
5. BG Legend Anthony Stacey
6. BG Legend Jay Larranaga

Maybe better for a conversation standpoint....what traits do you want in a new coach.

In order for me-off the top of my head.
1A. Be able to develop players.
1B. Put players in position to succeed.
3. Reach out to the community successfully and boost attendance/connection with the BG community, surrounding counties and especially students and staff.
4. Win.

That really is the order for me because I think #4 comes with the others.

For me the most important thing is recruit and develop top talent.

Beyond that I want a guy that is flexible. If you have a great perimeter shooter but no inside presence, then those years don't keep forcing the ball into the post. If you've got guys that can create off the dribble, let them do that. It really annoys me when coaches try to force their specific scheme on players even if they're not necessarily the right fit (Dakich forcing non-athletes into man defense, etc).

The part you put about rallying the community/student body is very important to me as well.

I think if you get a guy that can recruit and then is willing to adapt his scheme to his current talent, you'll win. If you combine it with a guy that is willing to sell the program you'll have life in BG hoops again. Of course you'll lose that coach in a few years, most likely, but I'm ok with that.

I was saying Anthony Stacey in a bit of Jest but this guy seems interesting. Probably not ready yet but get him on staff atleast.

Get a vet coach with Clarke and Stacy and maybe Hopson as assistants and thats a nice mix.

There are two traits that would be at the top of my list of requirements. First, the ability to effectively evaluate talent. The new coach needs to be able to find players who can make the transition from whatever level of high school they are playing to the MAC. And not just a middle of the road MAC team but a title conending MAC team. There are plenty of high schoolers who put up big numbers at that level but do not have the ability to play at the D1 level. One of the problems out present staff seems to have it recruiting raw talent based upon their size and mistakenly thinking they can develop into solid players.
Second, the ability to get these players to come to BG and be part of what we hope is a championship team. That means the ability to sell your vision of what you hope to create as a coach with the BG program. If BG can find a coach with these two traits I will be happy.

As long as the coach hollers a lot, stomps around and shows "fire," he's cool with me. It helps if he grabs a facemask or two. Even if he has to issue helmets to basketball players just so he can grab their facemask, that's the ticket.

Almost a 0% chance a MVC head coach would leave to take a MAC job.

I will keep updating as time permits . . .

The WISH LIST 2013-14 version-
1. Chris Jent, financially stable from solid NBA career, probably making more as asst at OSU than would would here as HC, (let's just be honest) but an ABSOLUTE HOME RUN hire . . . And no, I'm about the furthest thing away from being a Buckeye fan . . .

2. Matthew Graves, Butler, quite possible that he will have a choice of several jobs, that's why it's important for BG to make a move early. Key member of one of the top teaching staffs in America and he's still young.

Two completely off the radar names for you that won't get consideration, but we need something to talk about around here . . .

Scotty Davenport, Bellarmine, a D-2 school in Louisville and they won it all 2 years ago. GREAT teacher of the game. Awesome ambassador for the school, no one in town will say anything bad about him. GREAT guy, better coach.

Chris Renner, Ballard HS (Louisville, KY) 46 years old. Won the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen (16 regional winners go to 'state tournament') at the age of 32. Has since been runner up in 03, 05, and 10. They play in the semi finals tonight. I saw someone mention three open scholarships if Chauncey leaves, he could recruit his own guys and I guarantee you we would be more athletic tomorrow. Crazy athletes at this school. Tradition rich powerhouse. Yes, it's pie in the sky and all of that, but its's a name and he's a WINNER.

Others mentioned before . . . .

Bacari Alexander, Michigan- He's the recruiting machine up north
Anthony Soloman, Notre Dame

Here's two younger guys, if you have to steal from a staff, find someone who has been around greatness-
Chris Jans, Assoc HC Wichita State (Gregg Marshall, already taken two teams Winthrop and now Wichita State dancing. Jans is Marshall's right hand man)
Mike Rhoades, Assoc HC Va Commonwealth (Shaka's go to guy, if the Jim Boeheim rumors are true, they might be packing their bags for Syracuse, but if not, we could do a lot worse)
