FWIW, his children attend(ed) St. Aloysuis in BG and Toledo St. John Jesuit High School.

Orr can and should still go. But I am glad they didn't let Christopher hire the successor.

He stayed ahead of the posse. He maxed out the donor base, modernized facilities that brought us up to par with our bretheren, won in football and didn't completely embarass himself in basketball up until this year, which we now know might not have been his call anyway.

His fundraising acumen is derisively used as a pejorative around here when it should not be. Athletic departments are starving for money and people who have this skill set get hired for jobs like this. It can be done by superior organization and talented people or by riding the positve wave of winning programs. We can probably agree he relied more on the latter, which speaks even more to the potential of this university.

We basically need another Greg Christopher who can hire a basketball coach. If we examine the candidates last time around:

Whit Babcock: AD at Cincinnati
David Sayler: AD at Miami (OH)
Janna Blais: SWA at Northwestern (great lady, not the right fit for this position)
Shelley Abbelbaum: Assistant AD at MSU (ditto)

My pick is Tom Hof. BG guy, tons of expereince at Ohio State, personable, great family and can sell ice to Eskimos in Alaska.

Another name to keep an eye on given Mazey's history:

Steve Watson at St. Bonaventure?? BGSU grad, great guy made a great basketball hire at St. Bonaventure. Remember the Bonnies went to the tournament last year and almost beat Florida State.

He also came in after the embarrassing academic scandal almost led to them getting the death penalty.

Off-topic (but considering the Dr. Mazey mention) since this should be in the WOMEN'S HOOPS FORUM - but if BG wins Thursday and Auburn wins on Thursday - GUESS WHO WE WOULD PLAY IN THE ELITE EIGHT????

Just checking the site for the first time today. I've got to say, for all of the times I've disagreed with factman, this (the comment above) made me laugh. Well played, sir.

Last time we had to replace an AD it was two presidents ago and the process was very open. Any word yet on a timetable for replacing GC? Or any word on who will be involved and what Lind of voice the alums will have in this process? Or is it too early since the announcement to know anything?
MarkL has spoken.

I'm starting to believe less and less in building successful programs here. I heard Urban Meyer speak today and while he may have been joking he said that he was offered the BG job and was going to turn it down because it was a bad job. He said he called Lou Holtz and he told him he was going to turn it down because it was a bad job. Holtz told him of course it's a bad job...that's why they want you.

If I remember correctly Keith McCleod wanted to not fulfill his letter of intent but Dakich said he had to.

It seems that even the good thing that happen here end up bad.

At least the confirms one thing, Urban is STILL a douchbag!

You may think this about Urban, and many of the folks on this board still stew about his leaving BG with an "allegedly" new contract on his desk, but I DO recall this story from many years ago, and I think Holtz would verify it.

Lou is a KSU grad

I believe Urban was feeling he was too good to take the job and Holtz shot his ego down. Meyer said something like "Why should I go to Bowling Green? and Holtz shot back "What is BG even thinking offering you the job?" Something to the effect of BG taking a chance on Meyer who had never served as an offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, or as special teams coordinator.

Urban and Mo - neither took a BG team to a bowl game.

No money. That's why we get a guy like Urban with limited experience. No money. That's why we don't have the resources surrounding programs to attract top candidates. No money. That's why we are inconsistent.

The key to hiring for any position at BG is to get someone who is hungry to climb the ladder like Urban. He did not win any bowl games at BG but he certainly set the table for the next guy who failed to win the MAC but did get that bowl win. We must accept the fact that until the fan base is expanded we will lose guys like Urban but at the same time we get a lot of notice for giving a guy like Urban his start. I like the underdog role. You can't be a true mid-major fan if you don't like being an underdog.
