I hope that the next coaching hire is someone that would demand (and be able to be paid) a more competitive salary for the MAC, say low-end, that's $200K. So now you're paying $368K in head coach salary for a year. Someone said assistants often work year-to-year, but if there are assistants to buy out, you're adding more to that total. Then you're bringing in assistants, most likely, add some more. The point was brought up about having a "veteran" coach to oversee operations and assist on the bench. How much does a decent veteran demand?

Seems like the entire deal would hit the $500-600K range pretty quickly. Maybe my knowledge (or math) is wrong, but it seems like it would be a lot more involved that "just" $168K.
The new coach up to 168K is a sunk cost so you can somewhat take that out. You need to have someone coach your team. The extra money is paying someone not to coach your team and paying someone more then what the last guy got.

By the way, what ever did happen to the Junior Falcons program? Must not have been in the contract.

My understanding was Dakich ran the program. It ended when Orr got here. Not sure if it was just omitted from the contract, or if Dakich did it for free, or if the University funded it and cut the funding when Dan left. I really don't know.

If I had to guess I'd say it's because Orr doesn't embrace the community in the same way Dakich did, but I've been preaching this a lot lately...

That was my assumption as well. Oh well, BG athletics are broke. I love being told by university employees to pony up more money. Myself and the rest of the season ticket holders didn't make BG athletics broke.

Excellent points. College athletics is like a relationship that's been going on for a while...commit or get out.

I can care less about the PR (what, a snippy BG News editorial?) or the reaction among the faculty. Proven losers at high profile sports need to go or we are no longer functioning at the Division I level.

How many non-athletic university decisions have been made that athletic department might have disagreed with, and yet they are supposed to cowtow to their bitching? Disgraceful and reflective of a complete lack of leadership.

This is almost as bad as when a fuss was made about the Stroh Center when we had gone almost sixty years without a renovated facility. Listening to them empowers them when the opposite should be happening.

But the opportunity cost? No way. Because that's what we're talking about... ONE more year. A few years ago, same conversation, I'd agree with you. Not with one year left, though.
And he suggests we do that by cutting the price of season tickets, provide vouchers for free parking, and then give season ticket holders an additional $30 voucher to use in the team store.

BG fans want to be a big time program, yet don't want to pony up the $$$$. "Fire the head coach with a year left on his contract, but I'm not giving another dime to men's basketball until they produce a good product on the court." Is it any wonder the athletic department is on such a tight budget?
Where is this nonsense coming from? I'm one of those who is now refusing to give another dime to the athletic department until they FIRE ORR. It has nothing to do with "until they produce a good product on the court."

If they fired Orr tomorrow, BG would have a check for at least $1,000 from me within the week, because that's part of my annual donation to the athletic department. I am guessing that most people feel as I do: they want Orr gone, and are withholding their contributions until that happens. They are not holding the university hostage until it has a winning program.

If we had withheld our donations from the program until it made the NCAA tournament and put that money into some form of interest-bearing escrow account, we'd all be on the brink of making a donation similar to what Mr. Frack did -- it's been so damn long. :-D

I have little doubt that most of us are simply wanting to see this program headed in the right direction with some HOPE of making another NCAA tournament before another 45 years goes by.

The athletic department is on such a tight budget because the athletic department caused itself to be on such a tight budget. Not very surprising considering a BGSU employee doesn't understand why fans feel it unnecessary to give money to a school that cries broke whenever it gets in its' own way.

Thank you.

The people on this board are very short sighted in all things BGSU Athletics.

There's no compromise.

Right, but the point was if we buy Orr out this year, you're paying two coaches next year, so you're paying that $168K twice, PLUS whatever over that you pay the new coach.

Though as I said, it's math and there are no guarantees for my line of thinking.

Yep, we are supposed to buy tickets, donate, sponsor, and just hope that someday BG figures it out. Just keep writing checks and hope huh? If nothing else, we do have the 50th anniversary of our last trip to the NCAA's to look forward to.
