Why in the world would anyone come to BG now and play for Orr next year? Unless, its your only option...

Meh, a year under Orr is better than a year spent smashing rocks. Louis Orr may be a lame duck coach, but he's no Joseph Stalin.Rollo83 wrote:Why in the world would anyone come to BG now and play for Orr next year? Unless, its your only option...
Maybe a kid sees an opportunity for immediate playing time, likes the university, has friends/relatives here, is optimistic about our 2013-14 team, really likes our current players, or simply just isn't that worried about the probable coaching change. Who knows?
Also, we may be safety schools for these kids. "If I don't get the offer I really want, at least Bowling Green will be sitting there with an opening."

I would hope these kids are choosing a school more than a coach when they select where they're going to go to college. Coaches can always come and go, even at places that seem to be very stable.Rollo83 wrote:Why in the world would anyone come to BG now and play for Orr next year? Unless, its your only option...

This doesn't happen anywhere in Division 1 Football or Basketball. Everyone picks it based on the coach. Why would you go somewhere that you didn't know who was coaching and just give up your career to a coach you know nothing about.BGWriter wrote:I would hope these kids are choosing a school more than a coach when they select where they're going to go to college. Also if we are basing it on Academics or location we are in trouble.

Yep. I wasn't a D1 athlete with a ton of choices. I had a fun time and was able to have some cool experiences and meet cool people. BG isn't thought of as a good school by young people today. It's a fall back plan.transfer2BGSU wrote:Aren't you an alum?Globetrotter wrote:

Not sure what school you went to but I am in the education field and the business and education departments are thought of as top notch. Probably others as well that I am less familiar with. I have not had any go there as fall backs. Did someone let Schleprock out of the house?
Re: REcruiting before 4-17
I studied computer science. Program is pretty highly regarded. Education is top ten nationwide. Business gets loads of undergrad accolades and the MBA program is highly regarded. Psychology is highly regarded, especially the masters program. Sports Management, a very attractive program for athletes, is among the top in the country. Doesn't sound like much of a fallback plan to me ...

I majored in CS as well, and the program is pretty good. I don't know what the rankings or whatever say, but I know that I've been fast tracked on a couple job prospects in the past when they saw my degree. CS from BG has definitely given me preference in the interview process over other degrees.MarkL wrote:I studied computer science. Program is pretty highly regarded. Education is top ten nationwide. I don't see any reason to significantly differentiate among BG, Kent, OU, Toledo, Akron, etc.

Me neither.BleedOrange wrote:I don't see any reason to significantly differentiate among BG, Kent, OU, Toledo, Akron, etc.
And maybe things have changed but at the time I was choosing schools OSU did not offer CS (neither did UT). The similar program at OSU was Computer Information Systems and it was not as highly regarded as the CS program at BG was.
Although looking back I kinda do wish I had gone the Computer Engineering program at UT...I think that could have opened some more doors, but oh well. In the end, I think I got a pretty damn good education, and I'm not convinced that there was a greatly better option in Ohio.

OU is way better. The other ones are from larger cities that tend to be more attractive. Toledo for one is tied into the Hospital.BleedOrange wrote:I don't see any reason to significantly differentiate among BG, Kent, OU, Toledo, Akron, etc.
BG is a fine school. But the best and brightest are not picking BG. They go to Miami, Cincinnati, OU, OSU, Dayton or out of state.
I am not trying to nock down anyone's degrees. Where you get your degree really doesn't matter after your first job. My degree is from BG. What I am telling you is that BG's academics and location don't help in recruiting. It's the reason that you need a top coach.

CSE
CIS
One in Business and one Health Care and now one in communications.
I don't know enought about the CS program at BG to say which of those it's most comprable to.
Re: REcruiting before 4-17
I seem to remember a certain record setting receiver a few years ago citing BG's sport management program as one of the reasons he came here. Many athletes are interested in that program. I'd call that academic program a good one in terms of recruiting ...
