Time to pick an AD
Time to pick an AD
The May 20 application deadline has passed.
Our ideal candidate is most likely the second or third in command at a BCS conference school. My choice is still BG grad, fundraiser extraordinaire and all-around good guy Tom Hof. An interesting name also mentioned is former athletic department official Ken Kavanaugh, now the AD at Florida Gulf Coast. Here are some names of BG grads of varying experience in the athletic administration world that could be a part of the process:
-Mike LaPlant BGSU 93’ Associate Athletic Director for Development, Colorado State University
-Bob Moosbrugger BGSU 94’ Associate Athletic Director for Development/Major Gifts, San Diego State University
-Justin Sell BGSU 91’ Athletics Director, South Dakota State
-Jason Clarke BGSU 97’ Senior Associate Athletics Director, Wayne State University
-Chris Schenider BGSU 97’ Senior Associate Athletic Director, Ohio State University

Another to keep in mind is Tim Match, BGSU 85' Associate Athletics Director for Marketing at Clemson.
You wonder when the media will decide to get engaged on this one. We have multiple television stations and newspapers staffed with ostensibly professional journalists schooled in the dark arts of information gathering. Maybe it's time for these professional journalists to, I don't know, practice professional journalism at a level beyond reprinting press releases.

Re: Time to pick an AD
Nothing to report as of yet. The Board of Trustees has not approved a new AD because the President has not submitted a name to them because the search committee has not submitted a name to her, because the search committee has not met with any of the candidates because the search firm has yet to release the names and resumes of the search committee because the search firm has not concluded its background checks and verifications. It takes some time to do a THOROUGH job after the deadline for applications has passed.

1) My criticism (in this case) wasn't intended for the committee or the firm so I don't know why you feel the need to defend them.
2) It doesn't take a Woodward and Bernstein-type effort to uncover who some of the legitimate candidates might be before things become official.
Sheesh.

Re: Time to pick an AD
Oh come on now, it takes a long time to find a AD to replace the AD who gave Louis Orr a contract extension. Can we get some kind of Kohls like discount from the search firm, and just have them bang out a list of potential basketball coach replacements for the inevitable?

Only if they let us return him or her without a receipt.

I'm not defending anyone. I just wanted to see how long a sentence I could make. I thought the second sentence was damn good.

I look forward to hearing about the elite few with the chops to survive the committee's rigorous screening process: the dwarf from Game of Thrones, Mike Karabin, a life-sized wax figure of Andrea Dworkin and Baba Booey.

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

I think your giving this committee to much credit with those candidates..............mscarn wrote:I look forward to hearing about the elite few with the chops to survive the committee's rigorous screening process: the dwarf from Game of Thrones, Mike Karabin, a life-sized wax figure of Andrea Dworkin and Baba Booey.

Ha!
In response to Falcon Fanatic, blithely assuming all is well and trusting that our leaders are going about their business in a competent manner almost killed the hockey program before people woke up and demanded greater commitment, higher standards and accountability.
I think we both want the same things but I'd prefer the trust but verify philosophy given the history.

Re: Time to pick an AD
Who needs a search committee to make sure the candidates are a fit to the community, a University President to make the final selection, and a Board of Trustees to confirm the selection and approve the contract???
All we need to do is trust a search firm who does this for a very long list of institutions, has only set foot on campus a few times, and is located in another city or even state to make this decision. They should have the authority to examine credentials, conduct interviews, negotiate pay, extend and approve a contract. The University does not need a say in this! We just need to trust a firm who knows relatively little about BGSU to have a HUGE influence over the Athletic department's future.
Let's get our priorities right here people!!!!!

Re: Time to pick an AD
Don't know how many of you have followed the Rutgers situation recently, but ESPN was "scrolling" a bit last nite that the search committee was not happy with the way this process was "rushed through"...they hired a woman from Louisville who'd had been involved in some problems while in Ky. evidently...
While I share the feeling that I'd like to see our process move forward, I don't want us to rush into a selection that might hurt BG more than it helps.

Did listing six BGSU grads as candidates for the position leave the impression that knowledge of the university is irrelevent?
In all seriousness, while I still take issue with the composition of the committee, I have no problem with the chain of command structure or the necessity for thoroughness. Rutgers' mistake was ignoring the names provided to them by their search firm and having a bloated 28 member committee led by a domineering individual that knew nothing about athletics that even they now acknowledge was a mistake.
Search firms are used by universities across the country to recruit, vet and screen qualified candidates. They're not going to give us someone who spells "Myles" with an i, demands payment by Bitcoin or regales the Board of Trustees with anagrams of their names that describe Tom Cruise (Stephanie Magyar Imhoff: Pity Him, More Fans?)
