Isn't the point of an intelligent conversation supposed to be to try and get the two sides to find a mutually acceptable middle ground rather than to fortify entrenched opinions? Otherwise you're just arguing for the sake of arguing.
I love people who can laugh at themselves. It saves me the effort.

When one side of the argument declares an absolute authority to determine the parmaetrs of the discussion based solely on their job title...you'll never find common ground with people who dispute that authority

Oh, I'm most assuredly not arguing for the sake of arguing. These are complex issues and I'm always refining my opinions. I take my responsibilities as a faculty member who's served on the intercollegiate athletics advisory committee and as faculty union president very seriously.

I've done no such thing. Nothing I've written here has been based on the "authority" given by my job title. I've made arguments and offered evidence.

The problem I have is that you have stated multiple times that you're in favor of intercollegiate athletics ONLY if they are self sustaining. Well, outside of maybe 10-15 schools at the upper echelons of athletics, that is a pipe dream. And as I said, I almost prefer it when athletics are NOT self sustaining...the places that run them as pro sports franchises, making money hand over fist are also the ones that compromise what collegiate athletics should be about and bend [read:BREAK] the rules.

It is my opinion that collegiate athletics bring enough to a school/campus/community to absorb the costs. Even in a down budget time, and even at the possible expense of some faculty.

Your argument against athletics that it's not self-sustaining can't be used when our own academic programs aren't self-sustaining either. I know you're upset that the faculty is going through cuts and seeing as how you're in charge of BGSU's faculty Union you automatically have to take this stand. But, the athletic department has seen some pretty extensive cuts recently with some programs not even being funded fully.

According to USA Today, as of 2011 BGSU had the lowest expenses of any other MAC school. ( http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/c ... 54955804/1 )

Everything is basic economics, and I know you've already read this information. If a professor had a high demand, they could reach a very high salary. The same is true with many positions in all industries. As a whole BGSU is very responsible with our coaches salaries and have some of the lowest paid in our conference.

As an administrator at a local community college and a former student of professor Jackson's, I find this whole conversation entertaining....
