I'm Betting Urban Helps BG

Post by Salsa »

The story posted earlier about BG's recruitment of Thomas James from Goose Creek, Carolina looks like another example of what frequently happens--namely, coaches gettings tips from other coaches.

In the James case, apparently former BG head coach Gary Blackney, now defensive coordinator at Maryland, called his "friend" Tim Beckman, defensive coordinator at BG, and recommended that BG look at James. I'm guessing Blackney told Beckman that he had looked at James, that Maryland wasn't going to offer him (who know's for what reason), but that BG ought to take a look. We did and BINGO.

Urban Meyer recounts a similar story in a recent USA-Today article about recruiting Omar Jacobs. Urban called Kansas State and they tipped him off about Omar, and BINGO.

I'm betting Urban will help BG in the future, especially in tipping us off to kids in Florida, or in Georgia where I've heard he has good connections. Regardless of what some BG fans think about Urban, I think he will always remember what BG did for him.

I don't want to go there...with Urban at Florida, I bet they get REAL good, REAL fast.

I think this is probably true to some extent. I often see Urban, when asked about Bowling Green, take a great deal of pride (selfish or otherwise) in stating that he was able to turn around the program and they are getting better and better every year (or something to that effect).

I hope this connection he has with BGSU does not diminish if Brandon moves on to a different job.

30..Why would you not want to go play the Gators? These Falcon teams fear no one. And they shouldn't. Just look at our track records over the last few years playing these powerhouse schools. I think we will be at the swamp in the next couple years playing confident and thinking victory as we usually do....

I would love to go play the Gators. A road game in Florida -- count me in!

I don't think Urban will play either Utah or BG in the next five years. It would not surprise me if he never played them.

Although it would be a nice publicity stunt -- and he does seem to enjoy those!

There are a couple of reasons -

I am not afraid of a team like Oklahoma or Ohio State...our offense is a great equalizer (anyone else think the spread is like the option was in the 80's?)

But I have a feeling that UM will make UF damn good. In One Season.

Like USC good in 2006.

I don't fear us playing anyone, but I don't think we would match up well against a Florida team coached by someone who knows our offense pretty well.

I think a Florida BG game would be like the GMAC bowl with us playing the part of Memphis.

Very astute point. If I were him, I would be cautious about playing us non-BC$ schools.

My uninformed opinion would be that Urban will help us with recruiting (as Blackney did), but scheduling is another matter. I bet we don't play Florida, much as I don't think Paul Krebs will cause a boon in OSU scheduling if he goes there.

Well, if BG does play at Florida, I have an aunt that lives right there in Gainesville. Matter of fact, my uncle was a housing cooridnator at Florida after leaving the U of Miami back in the early 80's. He passed away recently but followed BG and both he and my aunt attended BGSU in the 50's.

I still don't think Urban will schedule us, though.

Coaches helping coaches

Post by JoeFalcon »

Remember, it's not just Blackney.

Al Seamonson and Tim Banks were both coaches on the 2000 BG defensive staff under Beckman and are now with Blackney at Maryland.

I know Georgia has some coaches with Central Michigan connections who helped them identify Jerry Seymore down south.

I can see this program growing so fast that the big 10 will be begging for us to shift into their conference. I ove that MAC, but man we just don't get enough recruits! That BCS stuff trickels down to us smaller schools.

Yes, he's 6-4, and runs a 4-flat 40, led the country in sacks as a HS senior with 1,358, but he's only 299 lbs, so I don't think we can use him.

Take a deep breath, friend. OK? Repeat. Feel better?
