CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :supz:
"Regarding BGSU, I would think their biggest strength is that they never give up, They never slow down and they battle hard even after the other team scores. We have to be on our game and never, ever take the foot off the gas for a second."

"BG was relentless. It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

That is fricking awesome....and it's a shame that these amazing athletes haven't gotten some recognition from the NW Ohio media.

Yes it is a shame. Heck a shout out from the University or the Athletic department would have been nice too. ???

This was such a huge accomplishment for these BGSU athletes. This is the Olympics of their sport. BGSU had FIVE (5!!!) of their athletes not only make the USA team but they won gold!! I really don't understand why no one from the University, the Athletic department, or the local news has reported on it. ???

These athletes have worked extremely hard since they were small children to reach the level that they are competing. They've reach the very top and did so with Bowling Green State University and the United States of America being attached to their name.

But who knows....maybe the University and/or Athletic Department are planning something big and it's taking time to get it organized. <wishful thinking>

Great news!! I think the cheerleaders are going to be honored at one of the football games this fall. I haven't seen a graphic of the BGSU World Championship rings yet but when I do I will post a pic.

Here is a picture of the ICU Team USA World Championship rings.

Why are there two different World Championship rings you ask....The World Championship that BGSU Cheerleaders won was for the College Cheerleading Championship that the BGSU Cheerleaders competed as a team against other National Championship winners/runner ups from around the world. So 20 BGSU Cheerleaders (or so) will be receiving these World Championship rings. They will be logoed with BGSU & World Champions.

Team USA is where they pick the best cheerleaders from all cheerleaders across the USA and form a USA team of the best of the best. One co-ed team and one all girl team. They then compete for the USA against 70 other nations of the best cheerleaders. We were honored to have David Clemons (BGSU Cheerleading Coach) be selected for the Team USA Co-ed Team and Abbey Pilgrim, Rebekah Pastor, Michelle Bowles and Megan Gill (BGSU Cheerleaders) were selected for the Team USA All-Girl team. Both Team USA Co-ed and Team USA All-Girl won 1st place to become world champions. So five from BGSU will recieve the ICU Team USA World Champion rings. (picture shown)

I'm so proud of these Falcons!! I can't wait for the game that they are honored!

The initial post here said the BG cheerleaders had finished 1st in the World Championships and a close second in the US championships. What exactly did they win and is this among all the NCAA schools or just the smaller ones? There have been some cheerleading competitions shown on CBSSN but I have never seen BG on any of them. If anyone can provide some additional information on this I would appreciate it.

I had the same question when I saw (briefly) what was labeled as College Cheerleading Championships, in Fla. IIRC. Ok. St. won, and I was disappointed because BG wasn't even mentioned in the top 5...
Obviously, There must be more than one of these events occurring in the Spring.

There are two main cheerleading nationals. UCA and NCA. UCA stands for Universal Cheerleaders Association. NCA stands for National Cheerleaders Association. UCA is focused more on the traditional side of cheerleading mainly focusing on stunts and cheers and NCA is more focused on the all-star side of cheerleading with more dancing and high energy pyramids.

UCA NATIONALS:
BGSU competes at the UCA Nationals. The teams are divided into different levels: D1A, D1 (BGSU), D2 etc. Then grouped by co-ed, all-girl, large, small etc. Large/Small is based on the number of cheerleaders on the team not the size of the school. BGSU competes in the D1 Small Co-ed Division. At UCA Nationals this year BGSU placed 2nd. (Only .7 points behind the first place team - Hofstra University). UK, OSU, Alabama etc. compete at the same competition but are in the D1A Large Coed division. ESPN broadcasts many of the competitions of which BGSU has aired a few times. However, the one ESPN shows the most and in the best time slots is the D1A Large division.

RESULTS: BGSU is 2nd in the Nation in the UCA D1 Small Coed division. That is an awesome accomplishment! BGSU has scored in the top 5 for the last few years. We have an amazingly talented team.

UCA WORLD UNIVERSITY CHEERLEADING CHAMPIONSHIPS:
The teams that scored in the top 5 at the UCA Nationals were invited to compete at the UCA World University Cheerleading Championships. At this point, the divisions were removed and the teams were only divided by large/small and coed/all-girl and competed against other teams who won national championships in their country. BGSU competed in the Small-Coed division and came in 1st place!!!

RESULTS: They are the UCA Small Co-ed World University Cheerleading Champions. Rings have been ordered and should be here before the fall. Since they competed as a team from BGSU the rings will have BGSU logos as well as World Champions.

COLLEGE STUNT:
The other thing you will probably see the BGSU Cheerleaders honored for is STUNT. STUNT is the new NCAA emerging sport of Cheerleading. STUNT, is the new competitive team sport derived from traditional cheerleading, but removes the crowd-leading and focuses on the technical and the athletic components of cheer, which include the partner stunts, pyramids, basket tosses, jumps and tumbling skills. If cheerleading ever becomes a NCAA sport it will be this STUNT format. The organizing body of STUNT is USA Cheer. STUNT has only existed for a few years. BGSU is one of the pioneers of the sport.

RESULTS: This year BGSU won 1st place in our region among Division I schools. We advanced to the STUNT National Championship and placed 3rd behind University of Louisville (1st) and Oklahoma State (2nd). Again this is a HUGE accomplishment. I cannot stress how talented our team is. So the STUNT team is ranked 3rd Nationally.

TEAM USA:
Since USA Cheer is the governing body of Cheerleading in the United States, they form two national teams one co-ed and all-girl to represent the United States in a World Championship against the best cheerleaders from 70 nations. Cheerleaders tryout individually to make these teams. (Think All-Star Team) It is incredibly competitive of the best of the best cheerleaders. BGSU had 5 athletes talented enough to make Team USA. Again...this is cause for Falcons to jump up and down and scream at the top of their lungs. It's equivalent to having 5 of our athletes make the Olympic team.

RESULTS: Both Team USA Coed (1-BGSUer) and Team USA All-girl (4-BGSUers) won 1st place in the ICU World Cheerleading Championship. ICU stands for the International Cheerleading Union. They are the international governing body for world cheerleading. The picture of the rings I posted above is from this competition.

SUMMARY: I am so PROUD of these athletes!!! All of BGSU and alumni should be proud of these athletes! They are incredibly talented and have earned some of the highest honors the university has received. Unfortunately since cheerleading is not actually part of the Athletic Department but under the Dean of Students, many of their accomplishments don't get highlighted to the level that other sports receive. Don't get me wrong...the Athletic Department and the Dean of Students are awesome and do a wonderful job at promoting, acknowledging and supporting our cheerleaders. Both departments are highly respected and appreciated by our cheerleaders. I think the real problem is that as of today, cheerleading is not classified as a sport so it just doesn't get the press that other sports do. But I love that our University and Athletic Department stand behind our cheerleaders and give them props whenever they can. I'm especially excited to hear that they will be honoring them at a football game. Thank you!!!

Who's who: BGSU has two main cheerleading squads: All-girl and Co-ed. The most talented of the cheerleaders from both squads (but typically pulled from co-ed) make up the BGSU Nationals Team. The BGSU Nationals team competed at the UCA Nationals and the UCA World College Cheerleading Championship. The BGSU STUNT team is an all female team and pulled from both squads. TEAM USA is pulled from cheerleaders across the nation. Cheerleaders individually try out for Team USA. Team USA represents the United States at the ICU World Cheerleading Championships.
