Any scrimmage reports?
Re: Any scrimmage reports?
Sounds like James Knapke had a very nice day. We haven't heard his name mentioned much in the quarterback discussion. Maybe we should...
From BGSU Sports...
Bowling Green, Ohio - Aaron Foster returned an interception 78 yards for a touchdown and blocked as a field goal, while the Bowling Green offense posted four touchdowns and three field goals on 15 drives in the team's first scrimmage of the 2013 BGSU Football camp.
Quarterback James Knapke and wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, who will sit out the 2013 season after transferring from SMU, connected on a pair of 50+ yard receptions, the first being a 65-yarder that accounted for the first BGSU offensive touchdown of the game. On the next series, the two hooked up for a 51-yard reception and Knapke eventually found freshman Fred Coppet for a 12-yard touchdown.
Later in the scrimmage, senior quarterback Matt Schilz put together a touchdown scoring drive, hitting sophomore Jermal Hosley from six yards out. On the next possession, freshman Marcus Levy scored on a whirling 16-yard run.
The next three possessions were played situationally in the two-minute drill. On the first, Bryan Thomas sacked redshirt sophomore Matt Johnson on fourth down and Josh Pettus followed with an interception on the next possession. The third drive stalled as the defense held strong on fourth down from the two-yard line, stuffing a run.
For much of the scrimmage, BGSU's defense looked like the same one that ranked No. 6 in the country a year ago. The first and second team offenses struggled to find the end zone against the stout defense, though they did put together field goal scoring drives.
Other than Foster's blocked field goal, kickers Tyler Tate and Anthony Farinella looked strong. Tate connected on field goals of 23 yards, 30 yards and 38 yards, and the duo made all four extra point attempts, with Farinella going 3-for-3.

Re: Any scrimmage reports?
A lot of "action" out there w many many reps run.
The defense certainly made some big plays and the first defense didn't give up much big. All the usual names looked good on defense and the DL showed some depth w others. Aaron Foster had an absolute monster of a scrimmage. Pick six. Two huge break ups. Etc.
Offensively, the young tackles seemed to hold their own. Some of the first year skill guys stood out on offense when given a chance. R Moore, F Coppet and M Levy all had some real big plays. And Dieter will be very very good next season.
Special teams wise, Tate hit em well and Davidson showed why we signed him as the punter of the future.
Go Falcons!

Last I heard of Knapke from Clawson was he has a ton of upside but needs a little bit of time to adjust to the speed of the game. Sounds like he's adjusting quickly!
And Dieter ... can't wait for that guy to play. I remember a game in Indiana where he set the national record for reception yards in a game. It was awesome. And in his interview, he couldn't quit giving the credit to the QB and the offensive line. He seems like a guy with a ton of potential for us and a lot of maturity. Bummer he couldn't get in this year but for a new QB next year to have him to throw to is going to be a luxury.

Re: Any scrimmage reports?
The report on Knapke is very encouraging and will no doubt setup a battle between he and Johnson next year for the starting role. Sounds like from the report it was more of the same from what we saw last year on both sides of the ball, which is good and bad. Offense getting points on half of their possessions though is pretty decent.

That SMU transfer sounds like a stud. Losing 2 star D players was big but I think the defense will be better from top to bottom with all the returners.
Hope at least one of these QB's keeps on lighting it up. Just keep getting better.

Re: Any scrimmage reports?
My two favorite sound bites from Coach after the scrimmage were 1. "Knapke's a smart kid, he realized he had a pretty good reciever (Dieter) with the twos going against the threes" or something like that touching on the fact Dieter isn't with the ones because he's ineligible and able to tear it up against the back ups. 2. He refers to Coppet by his nickname Box.

Re: Any scrimmage reports?
I just listened to Clawson's comments and read over the scrimmage report and it hit me ... Falcon Football is just about here! Hearing him talk about the plays of the scrimmage, about the backs making big plays, about the top corners, and about the offensive line holding its own against a dominant defensive front, it just feels so real. So looking forward to football season!! Upon realizing this, I have declared myself useless at work until further notice.

You've got good company with those in the athletic department responsible for getting our freshman eligible.MarkL wrote: Upon realizing this, I have declared myself useless at work
Probably the most encouraging thing about the scrimmage was the fact that two redshirt freshman offensive tackles went against one of the top defenses in the country and held their own. If the quarterback isn't protected it doesn't matter who it is. Their development is just as crucial for the offense as the QB.

I'd put the responsibility of getting the freshmen eligible on the freshmen and their parents.mscarn wrote: You've got good company with those in the athletic department responsible for getting our freshman eligible.![]()

Very well. We can eliminate those administrative positions from the department and put the money towards our recruiting budget.transfer2BGSU wrote:I'd put the responsibility of getting the freshmen eligible on the freshmen and their parents.mscarn wrote: You've got good company with those in the athletic department responsible for getting our freshman eligible.![]()

Unless I'm misinformed...and I'm not saying I'm not...the issues incoming freshmen have with the clearing house are in no way, shape or form a reflection on anything related to anyone at BGSU. The clearinghouse looks at HS records, scores, classwork etc...if there's an issue it's there because the kid or the kid's HS wasn't on the ball re NCAA eligibilty requirements.

Re: Any scrimmage reports?
Clearinghouse is strictly a high school issue. Usually its from the student and/or guidance counselor not scheduling hard enough classes, or not meeting the requirements of certain credit hours to be able to be admitted to college. These are usually resolved but typically results in the student having to take more "basic" level classes as a college freshman.Flipper wrote:Unless I'm misinformed...and I'm not saying I'm not...the issues incoming freshmen have with the clearing house are in no way, shape or form a reflection on anything related to anyone at BGSU. Re: Any scrimmage reports?
If the players screwed up and failed classes late or if the guidance counselors were negligent then that's another story and it's on them. Is that truly the case, though?
In the case of Rogers, he committed in June of 2012 and signed in March 2013. Do we honestly have no role whatsoever in shephering him through the admissions and eligibility process in that entire span of time? Can we work with the high school? What is our involvement with getting the paperwork through the NCAA? Perhaps Class of 61 or someone else can educate us on this.

Re: Any scrimmage reports?
From my experience, its usually on the shoulders of the high school counselors to take care of this process. They're the ones who submit the information on behalf of the student to the college for admission consideration. I don't know if there are other standards required by the NCAA that are different than a normal student admission submission, if so that may be the problem here.mscarn wrote:If the players screwed up and failed classes late or if the guidance counselors were negligent then that's another story and it's on them. As far as signing, that means little to nothing in this process. The student still has to meet the academic requirements to enroll at the school, he's just merely accepting a scholarship from the university and declaring his intentions to play there.
