QB1 Announced Tomorrow - Schilz or Johnson?
QB1 Announced Tomorrow - Schilz or Johnson?
So Coach Clawson says he will announce our starting QB tomorrow. Coach said "one guy is clearly playing better and one guy is pushing him."
We've seen Schilz, we know what we're getting with him. His regression last year is well documented. Say what you want about the circumstances. Johnson has that unknown factor. This is coming down to an "announcement" tomorrow leads me to think he may giving Johnson a shot. Worst case scenario you go with one guy vs Tulsa and if he fails miserably, you try the other for the Kent game.
3-year starter or not. We need to win now. Which guy do all envision leading us to the promised land?

Schilz steps up and returns to the form he displayed his Sophomore year winning the starting nod. I predict that he will surpass all of the numbers that he put up that year and go out on a record year.

Schilz
Schilz will be our starting QB and Johnson the backup. Expect to see Johnson play a decent amount against Tulsa.

Based on what I saw yesterday, don't be shocked if Johnson starts against Tulsa. He was the better QB in the red zone and tossed 3 TDs while Schilz had none. But I do think Schilz will get the nod but his leash will be very very short.
The longer the walk, the farther you crawl.
Re: QB1 Announced Tomorrow - Schilz or Johnson?
It's encouraging to me, Schilz had a 14 yard scramble in the redzone that set up a 1 yard TD. How many times last year could he have tucked it and ran for 7+ yards instead of forcing a throw downfield or taking a sack?
It would be interesting to see Johnson and a more mobile QB back there. With the way this team is capable of running the ball, you would think a read option QB would be a good fit.
By all accounts it sounds like it's a tough decision because both guys have been playing well and both deserve a chance. That is good news.

Based off my gut and having seen both I say Schilz. But if I listen to coach's cryptic comment regarding one QB pushing another it sounds like Johnson. This is a problem I am happy to have.

I have been a Schilz fan. I thought Johnson always sounded like a top notch recruit.
In Clawson I trust to make the right decision. I'll support whichever way he goes...unless he's wrong!

Funny because I based my comment on the same "cryptic comment"MarkL wrote:But if I listen to coach's cryptic comment regarding one QB pushing another it sounds like Johnson.

I think it will be Schilz. I can't remember when we had this many quality options at QB. You have a three year starter, a kid who was good enough to play in the big 33 pushing him and a RS fereshman who might be more talented than either of them. You also have a quality true freshman and a couple of highly regard verbals behind them.
It's not the fall that hurts...it's when you hit the ground.
Re: QB1 Announced Tomorrow - Schilz or Johnson?
Better over the course of the camp or better than last year? That makes a huge difference. I think it'll be Schilz, although the "pushing him" statement leaves the door open for a reversal mid-season (or mid first game) and rhetorically softens the blow, say, of a three year starter losing his position.thewebboy wrote: Coach said "one guy is clearly playing better and one guy is pushing him."
We'll see.
Re: QB1 Announced Tomorrow - Schilz or Johnson?
I'm ready to see Johnson. If they are even then I'd rather play the guy who has more time left here. Plus it doesn't even sound like it is even.

I believe Schilz gets the nod. He is on a mission this year.

Don't know that much about Johnson, but I never was much on small quarterbacks. He's listed at 6'0" so that means he's really abut 5' 10.5". Its so hard to find lanes to throw in when you're that small. Not saying its impossible but makes things that much harder.
Not a big fan of Schiltz either and have been critical of his decision making and inability to extend plays. I think you have to go with your senior.
But, Knapke is interesting to me.

Re: QB1 Announced Tomorrow - Schilz or Johnson?
Clawson made a statememt early on saying we needed a more mobile QB. That might have served as motivation for Schilz to run occasionally but Johnson is clearly more mobile.
however, I would be shocked if Schilz is not the starter. I hope Johnson gets some meaningful snaps in at least the OOC games. Maybe even a start against Murray St.

Either way, we should find out tomorrow. Coach said that the announcement would come after the decision was handled internally, which he claimed would be done within 36 hours (that was Sunday late afternoon).
I'm tempted to think that the coach we have would stick with the senior. On the other hand, if he was going to stick with the senior, I would have expected him to make the announcement and defend the decision at the season ticket holder Q&A.
Now, when the decision comes down, his rationale will not have nearly as much opportunity to proliferate amongst the fan base. Either way, he's going to have to prove that he's made the right decision on the field. Let's hope that's a good thing.
