Schilz named starter, which isn't too much of a surprise.

I'm trying to find where the announcement was made. Where did you hear it?

This is all an elaborate ruse to fool Tulsa...Johnson's coming out with the 1's to run the wishbone on the opening possession

Congrats to Schilz. If he has genuinly improved his pocket awareness and decision making we're in great shape and can beat anyone on the schedule.

If this were the NFL where you can actually throw away a season for development, I'd be inclined to agree, but in college football I just don't think I can. You're talking about going to a group of kids, especially the seniors and saying, "Well the 2 QBs are playing about even, but we're going to side with the new guy who we can build for next year rather than the senior who has been out there taking bullets with you for the last few seasons."

In NCAA football every year simply must be a "Win this year at all costs" and the new guy would have to seriously outplay the 3 year starter for me to unseat him. Even if they look about even in the practice sessions, I'm going to error on the guy that has seen it all the past 3 seasons over letting a younger player learn on the fly. Especially in a year where anything less than a conference championship will be an obvious disappointment (Read: FAILURE).

I guess what I would say is this: when the team was struggling, the fans were told that Clawson was building for long term success. I believe that it is working in every area except the quarterback position. This is Johnson's third year in the system, and if he isn't ready by now....

I really hope that Schilz leads this team to great things this year. Problem is, I don't think he has the pocket-poise, downfield vision, or accuracy to get things done. I think this was a problem even during his second year. Clawson's offense is built on short yardage plays, mostly. Problem is, all it takes is for two broken plays in a row, and you are in a third and long situation. And quite frankly, it happens more often when your offensive playbook favors short plays.

I don't disagree with the strategy. Quite the opposite, in fact. This strategy was used to beat us many times during the early Brandon days. It keeps your opponent's offense off the field, and wears down their defense.

Problem is, if your quarterback chokes on third and long....checking down to somebody at or behind the line, expecting them to make something out of nothing.......well, your entire system breaks down.

I honestly believe that the defining statistic for last season was third down efficiency, and I expect this season to be the same.

Here's hoping that's a good thing.

I don't think it's a question of Johnson being ready or not...it sounds like both QB's had really good camps but Schilz did a bit more.

We will find out real quick whether Schilz is the man for the job this season or not.. The Tulsa game will expose it... whether it be he's the man or not.

This could also be a tactical move for the future. If you give the starting QB position to a sophomore then the hopes of Knapke and Valdez ever becoming starters are all but quashed and the dreaded "t" word may be considered in the interests of playing time. This sets up a legitimate three-way competition between all of these players next year and keeps the possibility of any of them becoming the starter alive.

In the article today in The Blade, Clawson says that Schilz had a back injury last year that lingered around. Claims this year if he gets hurt again that Johnson will play. Good to know that the backup will be ready if/when needed.
