I don't have a problem with 1 non-d1 game per year.

I don't have a problem with one of these games a year either. It was more of a sarcastic comment about how we couldn't shake Lake Erie last year and how they gave us all we could pretty much handle where it stemmed from. We had one brief stretch where we built our little lead and nursed it for the game. Anyone like myself who saw or watched that game knows what I mean when I say game shouldn't have been the struggle it was. Nor should have been the exhibition before it vs Central State that we needed Crawford to go off to avoid losing that one too. You normally can't say an exhibition and opener sum up a season, but in our case, those two games summed up exactly the kind of season and team we had. Nothing really changed from those two games go the egg we laid in the MAC Tournament - and everything in between. We essentially saw more of the same all, year, long.

We have essentially seen the same thing for 6 years. The exception being when Coach Jackson went after Clements physically, and then that team started winning. Since then, the program has been softer than soft. We have seen very few times where the starters aren't playing till the final horn regardless of the opponent. It's a marathon to beat Lake Erie, not a sprint to run them out of the gym.

I'm not sure the issue is with scheduling a low tier opponent for a home opener. I think the issue is what that low tier team actually taking us down to the wire. A school like Lake Erie should be completely destroyed by us.

We lost to Defiance in overtime by 2 in 1985 or 1986.

FWIW,
Even back in MY old days, the usual home opener was vs. Hillsdale, and this was in the time period of Jimmy Darrow, and later Nate Thurmond et al. :-k

I agree, I mean the last two seasons the women's team has hosted NAIA school Madonna, and in last season's game they hung around with the women's team for a good bit of the game. That never gets talked about though because of the success that team has had the last decade. If the men's team can get it turned around under a new coach this won't be a talking point

I know scheduling this type of game is BG's version of a buy game. But the game is literally an exhibition. It doesn't count towards any postseason resume and doesn't count towards your RPI.

Does BG scrimmage another D1 school in the preseason? I guess it would make some sense if they did that. You are allowed 2 exhibitions vs non D1 schools. Or 1 closed scrimmage against a D1 opponent and 1 exhibition.
