To Our Very Strong Sports Marketing Department

Post by ZuluWarrior »

I think you folks do a really great job marketing BG Athletics. Your videos are terrific, social activation really starting to connect...but PLEASE use Roll Along as a slogan vs. Marshall's 'We Are' campaign.

Roll Along is ours and its awesome! Come up with something original! I don't care - just stop posting 'We Are' on fb and other sites. Please.

You guys really are great! Roll Along!

I agree 100 percent. Marshall was able to do it with some swashbuckling swagger. Our usage of the slogan is so lame.

Yeah, Roll Along is the way to go. The "We Are" crap is not us. Roll Along is 100% BGSU and we need to put it out there for all. #RollAlong is what I always use when I'm tweeting about BGSU and I also like using #MakeTheContestKeen because I think it's hilarious.

Actually, the marketing department could prove it's mettle by having the slogan read:

"Tootsie Roll Along"

Now hearing & seeing on Twitter All In for BG

AllIN works for Indiana & they've been posting it for over a year

So tired of having other schools' stuff shoved down my throat

I love BGSU because it was original & people kept coming up with new stuff now it's oh that's neat by someone else let's try it

Please smash all the copies of sweet caroline you can find don't ever want to hear that again

Roll along!!! works for me as does "Tootsie Roll Along" had them thrown at us at hockey with Lake Superior State & I Know they throw them at football

Lots better than 3 letters after BG SU chant

Use your brain think of something new

off soapbox too tall rare air

I agree with Zulu that I believe that Roll Along works better in BG than We Are BG. However, I don't think its a huge deal. In all honesty almost every cheer and almost every slogan used throughout the NCAA can be found at multiple institutions. If fans and students get behind it, which for the most part at BG they have then I don't think its a major issue. Additionally, the reason the All In For BG is starting to catch fire on social media is because of a speech that Van Wright gave to students, I don't think there is a connection to Indiana there. In all honesty I think it simply boils down to the fact that supporters of BGSU don't like change because this discussion reminds me a lot of when the basketball team wore black jerseys.

The problem I have with black jerseys is that they are a gimmick to sell more merchandise. I understand the need for revenue, but it's a cheap and easy way to try and create new news, instead of again, being original. I don't mind changes for the right reasons, I finally like our re-designed logo and here again, I thought it was needed, but it was safe and too similar to other recent designs such as Miami's.
Oregon has had some disasters, but I give them props for originality. TCU too.

Zulu, I disagree with you. I don't think the black jerseys are a quick gimmick to make a little revenue. I think this is actually change for positive reasons, just like you talked about. A black out and black jerseys is something that could be used as a recruiting tool, incoming athletes love it when schools have multiple jerseys and sweet looking gear. Additionally, it creates a buzz on the campus. Students get to witness something that is out of the norm and isn't the same old orange and brown. Now this wouldn't be super original because a number of schools do it for the reasons I mentioned above. However, in most cases I don't see BG fans being very receptive to originality. If it goes against our traditions or dare touches our beloved orange and brown the town is up in arms. If we get back to the topic of the We Are BG being used it has been around for years now and I don't see it going anywhere soon. The students and players have accepted it and from seeing how much it gets used on social media I don't think it is necessarily a bad thing.

I agree IBLEEDORANGEANDBROWN. While, I know some of the different phrases and advertising being done isn't all of the same traditions that we experienced but I think anything they are doing to try and engage alumni and current students is important. Let's face facts that we went to a college that is in the middle of Big 10 country and the struggle to pull some our student body away from those two teams has been a constant challenge. Now don't get me wrong I am all for keeping the traditions of Roll Along and many others but we need to open ourselves up to more attempts to build more steam around our athletic programs. I think it is important to remember that it is not a personal afront to us when things change, or they try to update things for the current generaton of students. They are in a fight for these students to care about this program so if it takes playing Sweet Caroline which I have heard at like 70 different sporting events before is it really that big of a deal.

Lets keep the traditions we have and be proud of them but not ride them off into the sunset of non-relevancy by not also letting ourselves update our program and reach our new fans...

Roll Along is ours, we own that. I don't mind using WeAreBG, although I think of Marshall whenever I hear it. It does say who we are to the uninitiated. I still hear and see Roll Along quite a bit, so I don't think our Marketing Dept has shut it out. If I had my choice we would use Roll Along for everything though.

Black jerseys are fine for bigger schools that have money to burn. I don't think BG should even worry about 'alternate' uniforms unless we use it more than a few times. If we did something special I think we all (alumni, players, students) loved the throwbacks a few years ago.

If you've got more than one theme -- you haven't got one.

While a lot of you think Marshall with the "We are" chants...it brings up Penn State to me, probably because I watch a lot of Big Ten football being in Columbus.

Regardless, it is NOT a BG oriented chant in my mind like "Roll Along" obviously is.

This isn't rocket science. You'd think those who are putting this together would see the obvious connection and make us of it. They're either over thinking it, or maybe they are using outside people with no real connection to the school and that's why they keep coming back with this stuff.

Of course even if that's the case, someone at BG is approving it.

I agree with this. Roll Along works, and its ours.

Also, I hate black jerseys. They are an abomination.

There are two schools in our subdivisions that should never ever wear black: Bowling Green and Wyoming.

Black does not go with brown. By definition, black jerseys mean not wearing brown. And that's wrong.

Brown makes us special. We should embrace the color.
