Updated injury reports

Post by BGSU33 »

Gabe Martin - looked like a leg injury on a tackle
Matt Johnson - looked like a leg injury on a sack
Fred Coppet - hobbled off after he was tackled
Bryan Thomas - heard he was hurt too

Hopefully all of them were minor. I remember DC saying in the
preseason that Martin was a guy we couldn't afford to lose on defense. Not sure how much of a factor it was in this game, but our defense sure looked better with him in there than it did without him.

I'm pretty sure Johnson is OK. Coppet didn't look too bad. Martin is the one I'm most worried about but it didn't look awful so I bet he'll be back soon.

Murray State could not come at a better time...hopefully we'll get a nice lead and get a bunch of young guys some action.

Depth chart is out and Johnson, Martin and Thomas are all listed #1 at their positions. Of course, so has Walker the last few weeks and he's been out. Also, per John Wagner, Coppet injured his hip and said doctors are still trying to pinpoint the severity of Coppet’s injury.

If, by chance, it's a hip "pointer", it's a very painful injury...especially for an RB who'll take some hits there. :-k

Saw Martin on the sideline working over the back of his leg with a bar, as if he were massaging it. I have no clue what that means, but that was an observation I made.

I went back and watched the play over that he was hurt on. Looked like he went down on his own. It was his left leg and when he reached the sideline, he seemed to be holding the area of the hamstring. So that's my guess.

Looks like Martin and Coppet won't play this week. Hopefully they'll be back for Akron.

PER THE ST:

INJURIES: The injuries are adding up for the Falcons. Running back Fred Coppet (hip) and rover Gabe Martin (leg) are doubtful for Saturday. They were both injured in the Indiana game. Also safety Josh Pettus (knee) is questionable. Meanwhile defensive end Charlie Walker (knee) is probable. He was hurt in the season-opener against Tulsa. ‘‘He’s practiced ... feels better, looks better,’’ Clawson said about Walker.
Clawson is hopeful that cornerback Darrell Hunter (wrist) can come back at some point this season. Cornerback Diontre Delk could be out for the season after undergoing surgery on his arm.

No doubt. Rest them all. This game means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Let's get healthy for the MAC.

We're getting really scary thin at corner depth ....

We've "been" thin since Hunter (starter) went down in camp and then a day or two later we lost McCoy when he transferred (starting at YSU now). We then moved Delk there for depth issues and then we lost him too. Foster is a converted safety playing there now too. I think that is exactly why we're still hearing about Hunter maybe now coming back - if he's able to.

The injury to Martin has me concerned because of Clawson's comments about how he's virtually irreplaceable and they really have to mix things up without him in there. Consider this too, Martin was lost in the IU game when it was 7-7 and we were playing pretty good defense early on. When he was out, we were lit up. I'm not saying we would have won with him, but we sure played a helluva lot better when he was out there. If this is a hamstring injury or something, we need to sit him and get him back and not have it linger and limit him all season. We need him healthy.

Per John Wagner: More injury news, Josh Pettus suffered a knee injury in practice and sounds like he's out for a bit. Also, this hip injury to Fred Coppet is starting to sound a little worrisome. It said they expect to know the full severity of this injury in the next day or so.

Mixed bag on the injury front heading into the Akron game per the ST:

INJURIES: Rover Gabe Martin, BG’s leading tackler last year, is probable for Saturday’s game after sitting out last week against Murray State with a leg injury. Safety Josh Pettus (knee), and defensive tackle Ted Ouellet (knee) are both doubtful. Running back Fred Coppet (hip) is questionable.

I suppose probable, questionable and doubtful is better than out of the year. IMO we can defeat Akron with their replacements and should rest everyone except Martin to preserve them for bigger games.

The genius who made our schedule (Christopher?) also gave us a road game against a physical 8 win SEC team as the last game before Toledo. There's a bye week in between but it's still a terrible position to put a team in.

Hopefully Martin can go, he's the best player on D and very important to overall defensive schemes. Losing Ouellet Saturday hurts, however I've been impressed with Royster, Minns and Lunsford at DT. Walker and Goble/Baird on the ends will also help. I saw coach said we need a bigger pass rush and couldn't agree with him more. We need to make Pohl move around and feel uncomfortable. BG did a good job on this the 2nd half vs. Kent State.
