Finally installed for the season, nice upgrade and include a shot counter.

Re: New Scoreboards
but shot counters only on one scoreboard, wonder why?
the addition of the Latvian flag for Ralfs is a nice touch.

Re: New Scoreboards
They should have put up short-term manually operated scoreboard until they could have done it right. These are tougher to read than the old ones (maybe my eyes are getting a little old) and have an advertiser with white lettering on an orange background which never good (not on uniforms either). The same video board operation that is at the Stroh should have been installed. Lets look DI in every venue.

Re: New Scoreboards
The Ice Arena flat out looks super. I mean the changes, upgrades, small stuff, bigger stuff etc has combined to make this a great great place to watch an improving and hard working hockey team. The exhibition game drew 1200 highly engaged and excitable students to the game that followed directly on the heels of the home football game and competed w other TV sports etc. Our students chose BG hockey and really got it going. Now for OSU, let's pack it and go win.
Could there be anything in the Ice Arena "better"? Yes- if someone has the cash for video boards etc then just call Chris Kingston and he will be happy to get going. This guy also "gets" hockey from his West Point days.
We have one of the absolute best coaching staffs in the country. You never hear them worrying about facilities. They will tell you they have what they need to win in the WCHA. A wish list sure. But we have just what we need. We have some good upperclassmen and some apparently good younger guys. I love how the sport adds to our public face of geographic diversity at BG w the Latvian and French Canadians etc. Wonderful. If Burke comes through, I see us making some noise in the WCHA.
And in hockey, when you are in it, you can win it. Absolutely. Conference tourney champions is a goal. Then NCAAs.
Get to the games when you can. In hockey, home ice really means something.
Go Falcons!

Re: New Scoreboards
I was pretty underwhelmed with the new scoreboards but from what I'm told they were handcuffed by their budget. A nice videoboard on the south end would have fit in well.

Re: New Scoreboards
The mural around the seats at the upper part of the Ice Arena is awesome. Hard to believe such a small thing can make the Ice Arena look that much better and modern. Great improvement!
Re: New Scoreboards
Well, you know they still don't know what they are doing with the building. Whether they're gonna renovate or level it and start over.BGDrew wrote:I was pretty underwhelmed with the new scoreboards but from what I'm told they were handcuffed by their budget. Why level it, I think the ice arena is great, better than most.
Not fancy but a great place to watch a hockey game.

Just what I was told at the exhibition game. I was rather shocked myself.HockeyMan wrote:Why level it, I think the ice arena is great, better than most.

The mural looks great and the fans sounded great. The restrooms are horrible on the west side and the limited concession stands are not enough for 1500. Major renovations or replace. This program needs a better facility for the fan experience.

sources, please. thanks.
the arena isn't the sexiest place in college hockey, but they've done a great job with improvements.
as long as we fill it up and the student section stays amped, it should be good for quite a while.
unless you're telling us that there's a pegula-type donor on the hook... lol.

Re: New Scoreboards
It was the answer I got when I asked why they didn't build a "clubhouse" above the skate shop and Z-room, instead of the "Ice Box Seating" against the glass.poltergeist wrote:told by whom?pdt1081 wrote:Just what I was told at the exhibition game. Re: New Scoreboards
As a fan for 18 BG hockey seasons in a row, I think the fan experience is great. I sat almost everywhere in the arena, and I really like it. It brings back the old college hockey feel. I would hate to see us go all high tech and make it bigger when we cannot fill it yet. If we can fill the entire arena on every game, then we can think about building a new one. Renovations to the bathrooms would be nice though.FalconTurf wrote:The mural looks great and the fans sounded great. Re: New Scoreboards
The arena is still considered to be in "poor" condition by the University despite the improvements. There are structural issues but it also is nearly 50 years old.
As far as I know there has not been any official discussions about the future of the ice arena. If the university attempted to relocate the the arena and ask alumni to pay again after they helped pay for the offices/lounge addition I don't think that'd go over very well. Unless we see some crazy Pegula type donation I don't think we see a new arena in the next 10-20 years. If the athletic department can help the arena turn a profit then you might see the budget expand for new amenities.
