Our Biggest Non-MAC opponent @ the Doyt?

Post by thewebboy »

I was just wondering who was the biggest/most popular school (non-MAC) to ever play us in at the Doyt?

I see how Miami OH gets Cincinnati next year, CMU has Indiana.. when is it our turn to have a bigger school at home? (temple doesn't count!)

Mizzou was at the Doyt recently, I believe. Boise State and Wyoming are on the slate for visits to our fair city, too...

There's also Pitt in 2000 and Navy visited in 1994. And I think UC came to BG in '91 and '93 and they're 0-2 at BG. I don't think UC is jumping at the chance to come back to BG. Including Mizzou's trip to BG, these teams are something like a combined 1-4 at the Doyt. No wonder we can't schedule anyone.

I would say Pittsburgh in 2000 and Missouri in 2002 were the biggest names.

I'd agree with you 'Freak.....Missouri and Pittsburgh were probable the bigger named BCS schools to come visit BG, and both were recent games. As mentioned, Iowa State was there awhile ago. But we can't compete to what some schools already have or are having come visit their places in recent years. A huge part of that has been our success and that teams don't want to play us at BG, but schools like Toledo and Miami have also been very solid over the years and have had all kinds of BCS schools go to their places like: Iowa, Purdue, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Indiana, etc.
GO BG!!!

I'd love to see BG bring Wisconsin into the Doyt, although I understand why Wisconsin would want to play us in NE Ohio. They do a good job recruting those areas and to have them play there would be a boost for them as well. If you notice they get a lot of players from the Bedford area. We'll never get a team like Ohio State to come to the Doyt, it wouldn't be financially smart for them. BG gets more money going there and taking the payout than they'd get bringing OSU here.

Pittsburgh (2000), Iowa State (1977) and Missouri (2002) are the obvious names.

The best at the time was probably Iowa State, which finished 8-4 the year we hosted (and lost to) them.

The biggest name is probably Pittsburgh, which won the 1937 and 1976 Associated Press national titles.

Also: Our 2006 Wisconsin game will be at Cleveland Browns Stadium (not the Doyt).

Finally: I'm sort of hoping Bowling Green will consider spending the money it would take to lure in a big name in 2010, which will be the 100th anniversary of the university.

Western Michigan did this, and was able to bring in Virginia or Virginia Tech.

This is my dream. I would donate a large portion of my salary over the next 5 years if the powers that be could talk the Ohio State Chickens into a game at the Doyt. Find out how much money it would cost us and let's get it done.

I beleive it is pronounced "Wapauk-o-netta" -- correct me if I am slightly wrong on the phonetic spelling -- haven't done that in a while.

Supposedly, we already have Ohio State on the 2010 schedule... at their place.

And I pronounce it "Wa pa kuh NET uh."
