Early Head Coaching Candidates

Post by BGfalcon2010 »

Should be Top Targets:

Dane Fife-This would be my ideal hire. Big Ten Assistant, Head Coach Experience at IPFW. From Michigan, played at Indiana, young and enthusiastic.

Brad Brownell-Current Coach of Clemson, Former Coach of Wright State. Had a great run at Wright State. Sometimes guys are just not fits for High Majors, would be great to get in back in Ohio at a Mid Major.

Jeff Boals-Former MAC player/coach, Ohio State assistant-known for his recruiting

Dino Gaudio-Was great at Wake Forest and was shockingly fired. Ohio ties, was of the Skip Prosser pipeline. Who knows if he would want to get back in to coaching but BG should gauge his interest.

Jay Larranaga-Former great player, son of Jim, Head Coaching experience in D League with NBA ties. Young and Enthusastic.

Interesting Possibilities:

Geno Ford-Has not been great at Bradley, if BG paid maybe he would have interest in coming back to Ohio and the MAC

Michael Huger-Another former player, has been on staff with Jim Larranaga at Miami.

Travis Steele-Xavier Assistant, known as a good recruiter and considered by many to be one of the top young assistant coaches in college basketball

Long Shots:

Anthony Stacy-One of the All Time BG greats, high school coach in Ohio now, probably not ready to be a college head coach, but wouldn't mind having him on staff when the new coach is hired

Dave Clarke-Head Coach Owens CC-was on staff at BG as Director of Basketball Operations during 08-09 MAC Regular Season Champions team, Has done very well at Owens and can obviously recruit as evidenced by sending several players to the D1 level in his short time there including a kid to Miami(FL)

The writing is on the wall for Coach Orr. What do you guys think of these candidates? Do you think these are legitimate candidates? Feel free to add some of your own!

Definitely wouldn't mind having Anthony Stacy and Dave Clarke on staff for however the next coach is. Kingston came from NC State so it won't shock me if other names from ACC land were to be brought up. I know Globe really wants Bobby Lutz, who is currently on NC State's staff

I bet bobby lutz leads the options. NC state ties with head coaching experience. I would hope that both Stacy and Clarke find their way to our bench at some point.

Yep...season hasn't started yet so what else can you talk about and even the biggest dummy in creation can see that Orr is done here. Dead man walking... :-)

It is always very difficult to speculate on coaches, but good recruiter can make a big difference in the MAC in a BIG hurry.

Geno Ford inherited a good situation never clearly proved himself while coaching in the MAC, imo. (a la Stan Heath) I'd prefer to pass on him. With Anthony Stacey, he just hasn't proved enough YET, but as my all-time favorite BG player, I'd love to see him come on board as an assistant.

There are A LOT of guys that could come here and do well. Here's a concern of mine that perhaps one of you could dispell: How much $ will we pay the next coach, and could that alone cause some of the bigger names to pass? If we only offer, say $225K, how many of the best candidates would decline interest in pursuit of, say, a $440K opportunity?

averaged in double figures when the MAC was something, played 12 seasons overseas professionally, I'd say he was pretty darn good

He was an adequate player at best. Since you have probably only watched Falcon basketball a few years, you are forgiven. As for new coach, I'd go with Findlay's coach. Just beat Wright State and the very next day gave a good Dayton team all that they could handle. Pretty impressive for a D-II team and much better than the current BG team could do.

I would be shocked if it was a Big10 level associate head coach, unless they just really wanted a head coaching gig. Like BleedOrange said, those top level assistants are getting 450K+ for head coaching gigs at other schools. I doubt BG is going to pay the basketball coach more than the football coach.

I still say my first call would be to, Bruce Pearl. At least make him say no. I would take the first few years of his probation, it's not like the program has the talent to win right away, anyway.

Findlay's coach would be interesting. Ernst is only in his 3rd year. I forget who was there before him, but, that's when they were an absolute beast in D2.
