One thing that was attempted last year was bringing the game to you. They did that after Thanksgiving. I'm not sure how the attendance looked for that game versus other Black Friday games, or if we even got other people to attend the game that wouldn't have otherwise. I know I went to that game but would have gone if it were in BG.

She plays on the Toledo Youth Orchestra and that requires an additional day of practice. I've been trying to start a gym in the out building I constructed on our property a couple of years ago...my wife and I have a business we operate together and she's starting a side project independently. We're involved in other little projects...I wrote an hour long play for our church that I now have to finishing casting and producing for TKsgiving weekend. We have a lot going on...Saturdays are a day we can be together and get stuff done that needs to be done in the house and yard. I don't really have the time to drive down to BG and sit for four hours watching football when I have a mountain of tasks in front of me that I'd rather be handling. And if I do have the time...I'd rather go to someplace like Hidden lakes Gardens in Adrian to look at the trees and walk around and just....walk around.

I would have a youth game for five minutes of half time every game. Coaches by former bg players
I would give an sbx 1000 book scholarship to the best dressed bg student fan and announce it in between the first and second quarter. Or make it a competition and let the fans choose

Facilities
I would have a garden of honor between the basketball arena and football stadium with info and busts of the best players ever and information and highlights.

Concessions
I would sell pollyeyes breadstix and Myles in a picnic area just inside the stadium

Day of Event experience
I would have an area where you can buy beers outside of the stadium fenced in with gigantic tvs playing the Osu game before or after the game with a live bg student band during commercials and befor pre game.
I would create a shuttle that ran from the hotels to the downtown bars from noon to three am every football and basketball Saturday encouraging alumni to come
I would have a free coaches clinic with ex bg players helping kids outside prior to the game
And after the game.
I would break up the parking lot and name them by counties and have tailgaters park in the counties they were from, encouraging rivalries and ownership of the event

Tradition building
I would mandate that the football players and basketball players have a presence at all other bg home sporting events and campus wide events even a. Small presence with jerseys or gear on would do a lot. Have sign ups.

Frankly, I have little respect for someone who admits he hasn't GONE to a game in ...what...over 10 YEARS? But has all these great ideas on how to "fix" things in BG.
FWIW, I live SE of Cleve., fairly close to Akron, and I, along with quite a few on this board who DO choose to come and back their school, travel more than 2 hrs. to get here. We tailgate, have a fun time talking and sharing. YOU choose obviously to stay away, then show us how things can be fixed. Frankly, I'd just as soon see you leave this board. Sorry if I'm 'venting' a bit, but you really pulled the chain on me this time.

The band does very little for most of those in attendance. It doesn't draw people to the games. These are just ideas. Doesn't make them right or wrong. Again, this is a discussion board. I am not sure you understand how discussion works. Not going to a game in that time doesn't disqualify me from having ideas. I have gone to plenty of OSU games, went to the game at Crew stadium. Come back and go to basketball games about once a year. I just don't find it compelling to go back to football games. And I think it's interesting because clearly I like falcon football. Just not interested in the hassle of the game.

Maybe stop being so combative and just realize this is reality and try to come up with ideas. You have been to lots of games and travel far with your lacrosse playing son. What ideas do you have to fix attendance and the gameday atmosphere?

I think the discussion is worth having for exactly the reasons you point out. You're obviously a sports fan and feel a connection to BG athletics or you wouldn't be on this site. I think it's worth discussing the reasons why you don't feel compelled to go to a game, because I'm sure they are the same for other could-be fans as well.

That said, I think your band opinion is wrong. When I had season tickets nearly every season ticket holder around me was a friend/family of band members. In fact it is VERY notable how many people leave after halftime, not because the game is boring, but because they were mainly only there for the band. My fiancee only goes to the games because I want to and because she enjoys the band. I know several BG band alumni that enjoy the band portion of the gameday experience as much or more than the game itself.

I definitely think the band brings some people into the games. Maybe not as many as we'd like, but I'd be willing to bet it is directly responsible for a relevant percentage of our total attendance. (5% maybe as a guess...)

That's awesome. And this is exactly what I am getting at. My experience of the game does not equal everyone else's. For me I am meh on the band. It doesn't add to my experience. But it doesn't detract either. What should be done is some sort of cost benefit analysis. What does it cost us to have a band and how would not having a band hurt the game environment and attendance. At the very least I think the band creates a large number of alums invested in the traditions and future at BG. The percentage of band people in here is very high.
