Medical redshirt and hardship are the same thing.orangeandbrown wrote:Martin has used a redshirt year, so you would have to go for a hardship year.

Really big losses. I think moving BooBoo back to rover is the best solution and slide Sutton to safety. BooBoo had his best seasons at the rover position. Losing Cohen hurts but Heath Jackson has been really impressive in the short amount of playing time he's received.

That injury for Martin is a killer. Unless you're Adrian Peterson it's a full year rehab to get back to 100%. If he's not ready for next year, probably looking at a medical redshirt for 2014. Wow.
I would think Cohen's injury also means the redshirt is definitely off Teo Redding.
Damn....that is the worst possible news.

Happened on the Toledo's final drive too....SOB!!!! This was the loss on defense we couldn't afford, and it happened. On top of that, we lost yet another WR. That position has been ripped apart.

With the loss of Martin, I hope Ruggiero decides to open things up offensively. I expect we're going to need to score between 30-40 points against Ohio and Buffalo to have a chance to win. I'm not so sure the defense can sustain getting stops having lost its best defensive player.

The coaches have contingencies planned for such. It stinks big time and is perhaps as bad a loss as if we lost Jones last year. But, we've got a good set of coaches. They will figure it out. I'm guessing Senn gets a lot more playing time and BooBoo takes on more of a role reading the O.

I see your point and don't disagree, but Clawson came right out and said in the preseason that they didn't know what they would do if they lost Martin, that there was no real plan in place if that happened. I could do some digging to find it, but it stuck in my mind that he was irreplaceable by his comments and I remember reading that how it gave me a nervous feeling (talk about coming to fruition). Now that said, every starter has a backup and Clawson did say they had hoped for others to "show they could play." But this was the last guy we could afford to lose on defense, and arguably on the team.MarkL wrote:The coaches have contingencies planned for such.
The coaches obviously know better than we do but I am a little surprised there wasn't any mention of Gates possibly getting a look or moving back to Rover where he started two years ago. I feel like Gates was all over the field making plays at Rover then. Now, I almost forget he's out there sometimes. I'm not knocking him, but when he was at Rover I felt like he was a very disruptive player and made a lot of notable plays. Yes, I know he was closer to the ball, but I feel like this season, his most "notable" play was the ejection against MSU. I don't feel like we talk about him much at all anymore. That's not to say he's not playing well. I'm sure it's because he's steady. But when we lost him to injury vs Ohio last year I feel Pettus didn't miss and beat, and this year when he was ejected vs MSU I though Sutton did well in his place, which made me wonder about not moving him back to Rover. Big again, they know better than we do about it.

Justin Ford is moving to the rover position, BooBoo is staying at safety for now. Pettus is back for the Miami game so the secondary will at least get a nice boost. Ford did get some playing time this year against Murray State and has subbed in on numerous occasions during the year. More responsibility will fall on the shoulders of Lynch and Swan.

Seems to me if Ford and Pettus are both moving around and Sutton is established as BooBoo's backup that BooBoo is in fact playing some rover down the stretch. Hey runningbacks and slot receiver around the MAC ... I don't envy you at all.

From what I've been told, BooBoo is not going to be playing rover unless further injuries occur.MarkL wrote:Seems to me if Ford and Pettus are both moving around and Sutton is established as BooBoo's backup that BooBoo is in fact playing some rover down the stretch. Re: Status on Martin and Cohen?
The coaches have mentioned Justin Ford being a pleasant surprise this year and he has been Martin's 2-deep backup. No sense in shifting multiple positions if the backup is capable.

Re: Status on Martin and Cohen?
Also, Coach said that in our defense, high safety is a more complicated position than safety. You want Boo Boo there, and then put Ford and Sutton at Rover, which is easier to learn and easier to protect tactically.
