BG-Ohio TV
Re: BG-Ohio TV
I remember paying $5 through the MAC website about 5-6 years ago. That stream was just horrible.
ESPN 3/WatchESPN is amazing. It's how me and all my friends stay up on BG football nowadays. If you have an XBOX download the ESPN app and stream all the BG games through there.

This stings a bit, but, we just have to suck it up.
I'm sorry, but these weeknight games have really helped ruin MAC football for me. Nobody watches them (don't fool yourselves, the ratings are probably worse than those WSOP reruns), and they aren't even guaranteed to be televised.
ESPN and the BCS have absolutely destroyed college football...I"d rather not bend over and thank them for ruining the sport.
The folks at Awful Announcing just posted this:
http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2013/nov ... tings.html
I gotta believe that a good, meaning close, MAC game has as an even shot at grabbing the attention of an average sports fan in a midweek in November as an NBA game at the same time. Why? America loves football. At all levels.
From AA: "Don't let pro football take all the glory and hog all the headlines for rising ratings this year. College football is doing their part too. So far this season, ESPN's college football ratings are up across all their networks. Saturday Night Football on ABC is up 18% in viewership over last year and all their other channels are up at least a minimum of 4% from 2012.
Through week 10, college football game telecasts are generating larger audiences across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU in the 2013 season than the same point in 2012:
ABC is averaging 4,858,000 viewers for a 10 percent increase (vs. 4,399,000).
ESPN is averaging 2,702,000 viewers for a 4 percent increase (vs. 2,607,000).
ESPN2 is averaging 1,209,000 viewers for a 7 percent increase (vs. 1,128,000).
ESPNU is averaging 442,000 viewers for a 4 percent increase (vs. 424,000).
It's truly astounding to see both the NFL and college football continue to hurtle forward as a television product into a universe that nothing else on television, outside of perhaps The Walking Dead, could even dream of inhabiting on a weekly basis. Nothing can touch the NFL and college football is now stronger than ever. Is there an end in sight? Who knows where football will be in 20 years with the evolution of the sport and just how seriously the American public takes some of the issues that have raised questions over the sport in a generation's time. But for now, it appears that football hasn't yet reached its peak and incredibly, there's still even more room to grow in popularity."

ESPN wouldn't be underwriting a series of bowl g.ames if there wasn't money in it

I have a buddy that works in marketing for Buckeye Cable in Toledo. Specifically he's a stats guy that compiles the numbers so they can take them off to advertisers.
I'll have to ask him again how the numbers look lately, but I know in year's past he's always told me that even in Toledo (obviously home of a MAC team, and central to most of the MAC schools) the games showed worse ratings than your average reality show rerun.
I'll shoot him a message and see what he has to say on the matter looking at numbers from this year.

Just heard the news...I'll be leaving work early to get to the Doyt but my dad is gonna be pissed this game will not be on ESPNU or ESPN 2. I, like others, have run out of patience for ESPN. Just play the damn games on Saturday.

I know this conversation has pretty much finished but I wanted to mention that i talked to my buddy about the ratings of the Mac games. He doesn't have the national numbers but what he sees in toledo is that the ratings will be very good for bg or Toledo in these games...a top 25 program. If it's a matchup of anybody else he said that reruns of seinfeld typically draw a larger number.
That falls about in line with what I'd expect. That tells me that the only people that really watch these games are actual fans of the teams involved...I doubt very seriously that the conference is gaining a whole lot of new recognition from these games. Is it worth bending over to cater to espn when the only people watching are those who might actually go to the game if it weren't on a weeknight?
I don't know I'm to the point where I'd rather just go back to playing on Saturdays...even if it means never being on tv again.

I don't know why they don't push for Friday and Saturday nights? There are fewer games on late on Saturdays and you are only competing with HS football on Fridays.hammb wrote:I know this conversation has pretty much finished but I wanted to mention that i talked to my buddy about the ratings of the Mac games. Hang on, this no TV thing might work in our favor. Assuming only the diehard fans want to watch a game in the ice and snow in NW Ohio, the cameras pass by us to show the school up north's 95% empty stadium on national television.

Great night for sports on TV/internet. There's the huge match up at the Doyt....Michigan State and UK on ESPN in a rare 1 vs 2 match up and the Wings play the Jets on Fox Sports Detroit.
And lets not forget the UT Buffalo game on ESPN whatever ....

I read somewhere where the MAC is pushing ESPN for more Thursday / Friday night games. Off the top of my head NIU / Ball St. ; UT / BG ; NIU / UT would have all been attractive Thursday or Friday night games. Um, don't you think its a bit of a stretch to compare a game against BOISE STATE versus a game against a conference opponent?Falcon137 wrote:I read somewhere where the MAC is pushing ESPN for more Thursday / Friday night games. Boise has been one of the top programs in the nation over the past decade. Nobody in the MAC can say that. Northern Illinois is probably the closest thing to that right now but I don't think many people would put NIU on the same echelon as Boise. Boise is a name that extends nationally...nobody in the MAC does.

Boise in '05 is not what Boise from '06 on is. Most of the talk going into that game was about Omar Jacobs.bgsufalcon24 wrote:Um, don't you think its a bit of a stretch to compare a game against BOISE STATE versus a game against a conference opponent?Falcon137 wrote:I read somewhere where the MAC is pushing ESPN for more Thursday / Friday night games. Re: BG-Ohio TV
The hype that NIU (and Ball State) receives continues to baffle.
The great and powerful NIU has played crossover games for the past two years against UMass and Akron. Their OOC slate has featured 63 scholarship I-AA programs Tennessee-Martin and Eastern Illinois, 2-10 Army, 1-11 Idaho, 1-11 Kansas, 1-8 Purdue and Iowa, 10-12 over the past two years.
Ball State has gotten fat off their Akron crossover (with winless Miami still to come) and a non-conference slate of North Texas, Illinois State, Army and 2-8 Virginia.
Eventually the rest of the league will learn that the path to recognition and a top 25 ranking is playing as timid a non-conference schedule as possible and the Ohio State and SEC games that place the MAC in the national spotlight will vanish.
