If you define "talent" as "athletic" I agree that our guards have some talent. Outside of some innate athleticism though they offer almost nothing of value. None of them can shoot a lick (and I'll take this moment to point out that our head coach has yet to recruit a single player with a legit jumpshot).
They don't show any signs of basketball instincts. They don't facilitate at all for their teammates. None of them can finish around the basket.
To put it quite simply none of our three main guards do a single thing that I'd want a guard (point or shooting) to do on a basketball court. Can they jump. Sure. Can they move a bit. Yup. Do they have size? Yeah, and in Tisdale's case great size. But in terms of actual basketball skills or instincts. Zero, zilch, nada, none.
Yeah they'll score points, because they'll be shooting in bunches for a team that has nobody that actually has an offensive skillset. Combine this guard play with inconsistent wing play, bigs that don't have much ability to create their own shot, and a coaching staff that couldn't coach a game of nba jam and I think we're in for a loooooooong year...

Yep. More freedom of movement for offensive players away from the hoop. Defensive play hasn't adjusted.orangeandbrown wrote:Are you saying that because of the new focus on calling fouls?h2oville rocket wrote:One talent Clarke has is getting steals. At one point he led the league. However, it's good to remember that getting to the basket is waaaaaayyyyy easier than it has been. Both Kent and Toledo have won 100-90 games in the last two days. That's largely due to easier penetration.

The poor shooting is unarguable. I think they are under mor control this year and seem to finish around the basket better then you do. We played three really good teams back to back with a combined current record of 15-0. The talent is there he has talent and can finish. I fear that Orr does such an awful job of pushing that we should facilitate an offense that Clarkes potential will never be realized

Don't get me wrong, I fully expect us to be terrible this year. But USF, Wisconsin and St. Louis are all teams that this current program should be dominated by. Especially with our retuning high scorer from last season out with an injury. We can't really make definite judgements on guys like Clarke and Henderson -- both of which have never played even close to the minutes that they are playing now -- against teams of the caliber of USF, Wisconsin and St. Louis.
Re: BG vs St. Louis
Agreed. To look at the bright side, USF game was close until they pulled away in the last 3 minutes, Wisconsin shot over 50% on 3-pointers, and SLU appears to be in the middle of a Gonzaga/Butler/VCU type ascension right now.BGSUFanatic7 wrote:Don't get me wrong, I fully expect us to be terrible this year. This still looks like a team that would be lucky to get a total of 2 wins over Akron/Kent/OU/Buffalo/Toledo, but should at the very least be competitive against the rest of the MAC.
Last year I'd say only Holmes and maybe Calhoun would even crack the rotation for any of those top teams.
This year, a lineup with Tisdale/Parker/Holmes/Black at least athletically looks like it belongs on the same floor with the teams at the top of the league. If this Denny kid shoots it even half as good as we seem to hope he can that would make for as good of a unit as we've had over the past few years, so there's that.
LONG LIVE THE MONGOOSE!!
Re: BG vs St. Louis
Our biggest weakness is shooting, we recruit a freshman known as a shooter who led the state in scoring whose availibility for the season is completely unknown due to an injury that nobody will tell us about.Matty B wrote: If this Denny kid shoots it even half as good as we seem to hope he can that would make for as good of a unit as we've had over the past few years, so there's that.

Is Denney a real person or just a creation to get our minds off of our horrendous shooting? Wag the dog style.

Saying "well, we got our asses kicked by some good...by no means great... teams" isn't saying much. It's not saying much at all.
