Urban vs Clawson

Post by KPAFalcon »

If you had the opportunity to lock up a coach for ten years and your choices are Urban or Clawson. Who do you pick?

Great question. I'd take pre-Florida Urban. The SEC changed him, his style, etc...and I can understand how that can happen.

Clawson by an easy margin in my mind.

I dig defense and mid game adjustments.

Great topic!

Can I vote for Brandon? (kidding)

That's one of my biggest fears if a new coach is needed.

Where would this program be if Clawson would have taken over for Meyer?

Clawson.

This is how I feel. Urban is one of, if not them best football minds in the country. He's also a tremendous recruiter. I love what clawson has done, and am thrilled that he stuck around and finished what he started but I still believe the ceiling for a clawson team is what we've gotten this year. Mac title, double digit wins, and a good bowl game. I love that but I think urban is a coach that could have us crashing the bcs party if he stuck here.

That said I do agree with Zulu, he's changed. His football mind is still there but he's a big football factory coach now. Won't suspend players that he needs to win and kowtows to honk non alum fans to ensure the winning continues.

He's a buckeye now and as much as I love and respect his mind for the game I don't want somebody here that is win at all costs. Pick want to win the right way and Clawson is the right guy for that job.

Really???? Were actually debating this??? Come on man! Take off the the post MAC Championship Orange and Brown glasses! Meyer turned this program around in 2 years. Then he went to Utah and turned that program around in 2 years. Then he went to Florida and won multiple National titles. Then he went to OSU and didn't lose a game in almost 2 years at their helm. Clausen hung around D2 schools and had 1 horrible year as the OC at a D1 school until he came here and took him 5 years to officially turn our program around. And he still can't beat our rival or win a out of conference game against an inferior BCS conference team. It's a joke to even be questioning this. Congrats to him and his staff on a job well done, but he shouldn't even be in the same sentence as Meyer. Think what Meyer would have done if he stayed for 5 years.

Well said crazy fan, to think Clawson is in the some league as Meyer now is pretty silly. We'll see how Coach Clawson does on his next coaching opportunity. I'm sure what ever Clawson does it will be the right way and his way.

Our head coach (his name is "Clawson") has never been a head coach in Division II. Richmond and Fordham are Division I.

I would choose Clawson, first, because he did win the MAC. Urban Meyer never accomplished that. In fact, he didn't stick around long enough to really try, and he didn't handle his exit that well.

More importantly, Clawson seemed to do it the right way. He didn't do a tune up. He built this, brick by brick, playing youngsters and emphasizing redshirts. This feels like a brick house -- a long term improvement in the way Bowling Green approaches football.

Also, my guess is that next year will be better than this year. I like our chances against Indiana at home, and I think we may have a shot at Wisconsin. It isn't out of the realm of possibility that we could be the school heading into the MAC title game at 12-0 next season.

It is not fair to make comparisons. Reason being the dynamics are different. Meyers is a great coach. He does have an eye for looking into the future. He lost me when he gave up the job in Florida stating family. Then a year later taking the Ohio job. I am not mad at him but I feel he saw the hand writing on the wall.

When you all got Clawson I joined your board and have followed and supported BG since. Every place he has gone was dealt a bad hand. The Tennessee job was a last ditch ploy to save a failed cooperation. He not only turned our Richmond program around, he changed our mind set. We now think much more than an average team. Clawson will move on one day. His name always pop up in certain vacancies. He does have a tendency to not leave the pantry empty. Good Luck in your Bowl Game.

5 weeks ago I would have agreed with this spot on, but after watching BG play so well the last 5 games I'm not so sure. 2,5,8 possibly 11. With the depth he has created here, the skill players returning and keeping that trend in mind it is unreasonable to think we could win 12 to 14 games next year? I have been on the fence with Clawson his entire tenure here. He impressed me with the talent and depth he put on both sides of the ball but I was equally unimpressed with our play calling and general inability to win big/close games. Perhaps he just needed the right QB in there but my opinion of him and all that has been completely changed the last month.

Don't know what Meyer would've done in 5 years. Had he stayed in 2003 I still think we lose to Miami twice and OSU. I think he would've won a MAC championship in 2004 but I don't think we would have went undefeated and knocking on a BCS bowl because Oklahoma beats us with him coaching too. 2005 team was loaded offensively but quite sorry defensively.

I still say that an urban led team beats osu in 2003.

I love what clawson has done here and I think it's a base that could be a perennial Mac powerhouse. I just don't think that we will ever beat big out of conference teams with this type of team. The talent gap is too great. Urban has the ability to find where the opponent is at a disadvantage and exploit it. Clawson seems to have a good system but that's what he knows.

Not at all complaining, I'm just saying that there is a reason why urban beat the middle of the road bcs teams we played and clawson has not. Urban's schemes are always ahead of the curve and ahead of the opponent.

But like I said I'm not so sure I'd want the win at all cost bs that urban has succumbed to. The football mind, however, is the best in college football, IMO.

It's not as if we played Ohio State evenly all game, they were up 24-7 and we were lucky to get it close IMO. Plus these were the games where GB was at his best coaching. But who knows.

The way we played at Mississippi State gives me hope that I didn't have before that we can play with and eventually beat middle of the pack BCS teams.
