Estimated pay out 1.2 million

The Current system
600k per conference
180k right off the top goes to the MAC
420k divided 14 ways =30k per school
BGSU is now estimated to have 170,000$ in expenses to play the Little Caesars Bowl. $140,000 if you deduct BGSU's whooping 30,000$ take. I

Point being a sustainable system
600k - 170k (cost actually play the game and have fun of bowl game) 430k
you could still pay the MAC 129,000$ for being the MAC
leaving 301000 divided 14 ways
that is $21500 per team.

This second way, is a sustainable method for ensuring these games get played. Played with out burdening ever tightening budgets. One can only wonder if this only takes place once football becomes a self funded sport, as every sport should be, to ensure fiscal responsibility. Only 15 football teams in subdivision will do better than break even this season.
No one should get a dime of bowl money, until that money pays for the game, as is the intent of the bowl money. It will be interesting to see the final numbers.

Is the history department "self-sustaining"?

They did already win the MAC tournament which was a tournament they were capable of winning unlike most NCAA competitions.
Any NCAA tournament appearance individually or as a team comes with a expenses paid for by the NCAA. Bowl game expenses are paid through the payout given to attend each game. The problem lies with having to sell tickets to destinations too far from a teams campus.
In all honesty, BG shouldn't lose too much money if they sell their ticket allotment in Detroit. I'm sure last years appearance in DC cost the department significant money due to travel expenses and having to eat tickets that went unsold. The thing that sucks is the double edged sword of winning the MAC Title actually cost the department significant money.

Bottom line BG is going to go to a bowl game anytime it is invited. I do agree that mid majors spend way too much trying to compete with BCS conference schools. MAC athletic departments still haven't realized that spending more money doesn't ensure championships. Football at this level is very cyclical.
BGSU was awful four years ago now they are on top, it was a great run and a lot of fun to watch. However, it is what happens, most MAC football teams go from bad to decent to good (having a chance to win a couple titles) over the course of 4-8 years; then what happens....Players graduate, coach goes to a different school, etc and you are back to working your way through the cycle again. A smart AD should understand there has to be a balance, because if you dump too much into football and you aren't getting revenue back in with ticket sales, sponsorships, donations, etc, you are going to have a tough time properly supporting your other sports. Personally, I think this AD understands that and have faith that we won't be destroying programs to support football. The last guy didn't understand that and really hurt a lot of sports with his mismanagement...i.e. Hockey, Baseball and some of the women's sports.

Falcon1970, I believe you are mischaracterizing the MAC's system for distributing bowl revenue. At this point, you are just trolling. The idea that the MAC champion would sit out the bowl season is completely absurd. This forum is for fans of the football team.

Schadenfreude, you said exactly what I was thinking but much more politely than I intended to say it. Thank you.

I'd personally like to welcome all the BGSU faculty as newbies to our discussion boards. Apollo and Falcon 1970, do you think BG should switch to a 3-4 defense next year?

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

The answer in crystal clear. We decline the bowl invitation, take the team to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey championships instead, dress them out in drag and win the title!

Why don't they just go back to their faculty discussion boards?

What some of these guy don't understand, is that if you do some of the things that they would like, we would have half as many students at the university, so we could get rid of HALF of the faculty! I would like to see each departments numbers (faculty and students), so we can start picking at each of their budgets! ;)

Judging by that letter, BG should have deliberately lost the game so NIU could cash in on the BCS game and get the MAC (and BG) a bigger slice of the pie.

However, didn't I read somewhere that despite all that extra money from the BCS game last season the MAC didn't really make any more than it might have if NIU had gone to any other bowl game -- because of the greater expenses involved?

Perhaps I misread it.

Or the fact that athletics are technically marketing done by the university and is a vehicle for attracting students to the school. Take a look at schools who don't have Division 1 athletics and I'm sure you'd see their enrollment numbers are minuscule compared to even a school like BG. So, its a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation depending upon your viewpoint.

I believe the university isn't self-sustaining. Otherwise, why would they have to cut faculty positions during an age when tuition and fees have continued to climb, and the government has poured billions of dollars into student loans to keep the whole system inflated (including faculty salaries).

Along with demanding that sports teams be self sustaining financially, how about we stop all the federal subsidies that have allowed the whole college education system to get so out of control cost-wise?

Let's make colleges and universities compete with one another directly for student dollars, and to make ends meet. That way there will be no more deficits and no need to cull faculty slots periodically because the whole system has gotten so outlandishly bloated.

If a particular course of study isn't drawing in students or necessary for them to move on to jobs in the work world, then let's simply eliminate these unnecessary courses and only teach those that can pay for themselves through tuition and fees.

Then we can have a college world where there are no sports that don't pay for themselves and no course work that isn't completely supported by student fees.

Sounds like a great world, doesn't it?
