Minor point: they coached together at Hofstra but not under Clawson. Elko was the linebackers coach at Richmond under Clawson. Ruggiero had never worked with Clawson before BG but they had mutual friends in the profession.
Elko clearly has the stronger case to be made the HC, but in either case Nick Monroe is the prime candidate for a promotion to defensive coordinator under either one of them.
They both coached under Clawson at Bowling Green as well.
I would like to think that the interim coach decision was made to let the coordinators focus on their duties heading into the bowl game. However, the more likely guess is that Elko & Ruggiero are both headed to Wake, and sooner rather than later.
If I'm Elko, BG is better than Wake Forest and a bunch of other BCS defensive coordinator jobs he'll be up for are better than Wake Forest. Pretty much everything is better than Wake Forest.

Except the money, of course, which could be significantly higher at a BCS school.
You have to remember a lot of these guys have families and want to provide as much security as possible for them. If you can make an extra $100,000 or more by coaching at Wake Forest, it would be very difficult to turn down. It's not like that area sucks as far as quality of life or cost of living.

No doubt, but you also have to look at Turner Gill (fired after 2 years at Kansas) and even Beckman, who barely survived a year at Illinois and is just hanging by a thread after two.

Please no head coaching retreads!!!!! That includes Turner Gill and Luke Fickell. I know Fickell was just an interim head coach but wasn't impressed with his organization or gameday coaching.
Everyone points to Frank Solich as someone who got a second chance at OU but look how that has turned out now? OU has been competitive but not great!
I want a young, up and coming guy like an Urban or a Dave Clawson.

Urban and Clawson's career paths when they got to BG we're completely different. Urban was pretty much a complete unknown assistant under, Lou Holtz. Urban was definitely up and coming. Clawson was known as a 1AA program builder who had just been run out of Knoxville after a horrible season at Tennessee. He was the coach who couldn't get Arian Foster drafted. He was a great hire at the time. But, definitely not considered up and coming.
This is either a major slap in the face to Elko or Elko already said he was leaving with clawson.. It's as simple as those 2 scenarios.. No way elko sits there as they name the special teams coordinator interim HC if he wanted to be the next guy at BG

Yes, I get it...but I guess I define "up and coming" as an assistant taking a first time head coaching position or a head coach at a smaller school taking a head job for a bigger opportunity.
What I don't like is us taking a head coach that had a prior stint at a BCS school where it didn't work out. Just because he comes from a bigger program and we recognize his name, we think he's a good fit here. Lou Orr is my prime example of this.

Maybe I'm naive, but I just assumed Elko was going with Clawson to Wake. He's one heckuva coach, and if I'm Clawson, he's the first guy I make sure says yes to me as an assistant.
