Per coachingsearch.com...
Bowling Green has interest in Tennessee offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Mike Bajakian. Like former head coach Dave Clawson, Bajakian is a Williams College grad. More importantly, he has spent 5 years in the MAC and previously coached at Cincinnati.

Football Scoop tweeted out:
"Have spoken w a number of coaches this AM re: Bowling Green opening. Word is Urban is supporting Luke Fickell. More...
Am told DJ Durkin has tremendous support there already and is in good position for the job as well. Much depends on the coming interviews."

Fickell would be interesting. He certainly has the D chops. Plus he's probably learned what NOT to do as a coach...lol

Did you watch OSU attempt to play defense at all this year?

No to Fickell, yes to Durkin. Someone with BG ties would be preferable this time around with a program finally established.

Of course Urban is supporting Luke Fickell. If he doesn't take that job he will likely be fired.Falcon137 wrote:Football Scoop tweeted out:

I wouldn't touch Fickell with a 20 foot pole.
What Elko has done here with the defense has less than zero bearing on whether or not he should be the next head coach, IMO. The 2 jobs are completely independent on one another and the ability to do one or the other well has no bearing on how well you will do in the other. To simply say "he's shown enough for the gig" and hire him is a colossal mistake that our last AD made when Meyer left and it left us screwed. Elko is quite welcome to interview for the job but he better show up with a plan and portfolio of what he wants to do as a coach. If he even utters the words, "Stay the course and continue what we've started here." I'd probably end the interview and send him on his way. I want a coach that is hungry with a plan of attack. Something he's been preparing for the past 10 years of his coaching life ready for this next opportunity.
Durkin looks like it'd be a great hire, IF he's willing to embrace offense. I always fear defensive background coaches because so many of them want football to be ball control and time of possession. If Durkin can get a dynamic offensive coordinator that looks like he will know how to put up points then I'm on board with him.
Personally, I'm a fan of the process that got us Urban Meyer. Scrounge for under the radar coaches and find a fiery young guy with his heart set on being a head coach... I wouldn't limit my search just to guys that have been successful coordinators...as stated I don't look at being a good coordinator as having that much correlation to being a good head coach. They're 2 entirely different jobs.
I like Durkin's personality though, so I could see him fitting with my criteria, depending on his offensive ideas.

After this season, I think Durkin is well aware of the problems a poor offense can lead to....

What more could Elko have done? The only other people we're considering except Babers are assistants so they are in the exact same boat as him. The difference is that he's done it at BG. He's recruited the players, disciplined the players, motivated the players, coached the players, sat side by side with Clawson in staff meetings and knows the formula for winning a MAC championship.hammb wrote:

As I said. Due to his resume I'd give him an interview.mscarn wrote:What more could Elko have done? No way do I hire a coach based on a resume, though. That's what makes this so hard for us as fans...the only thing we can really know is the resume.
What Elko could do to impress me is to come into that interview and say, "I know how Dave did it, and I have a great respect for him, but here is MY Plan for BGSU football". Then I would want to hear that plan and to weigh it against the plans I hear from other candidates.
A resume is great, and no doubt Elko has been a fantastic defensive coordinator here. I wouldn't rule him out as a candidate, I'm just not giving him one ounce of extra consideration due to who his previous employer/position was. The head coach position is completely different than being a defensive coordinator. Elko could turn out to be the best head coach in college football history, I don't know, but his success at the DC position won't be why. In an interview he needs to show who Elko the head coach is, not harp on who Elko the DC has been.
That's the right way to hire ANY head coach, IMO. The resume gets you the interview, but the interview should get you the job.
Re: Dave Clawson is headed to Wake Forest per CBS
That's a good point but in coaching you can argue that the tape is your resume. Elko has been interviewing for five years. Of course he needs to present his broader vision and plans for the program as a whole, but we have ample evidence of this from the current operation at BG (academics, strength and conditioning, camps, recruiting) and it's going pretty well.hammb wrote:As I said. Many coaches can also smooth-talk an AD in an interview setting yet perform poorly in the job itself.

Hell yes to DJ Durkin.
