I guess we know how clawson really felt about BG
Re: I guess we know how clawson really felt about BG
Urban has always made the right moves. Utah? He knew what he had in Alex Smith.
Utah wasn't viewed as a huge step up from BG when Meyer left...other than the cash. In fact most people thought "Utah? WTF?"

His daughter said if Dave wanted the job they would be okay with moving. I think they wanted him to be happy and realize this might be the last stop for him for some time.zete wrote:The...bottom ...line...... IS......they....want out of here......ASAP!!!!!!!!! BG fans realize this sooner or later. We are a STEPPING STONE.
Wonder if the rest of the Clawson family wanted to move? Coach probably said the right things and motivated them to start packing.

Re: I guess we know how clawson really felt about BG
I don't think he had any animosity toward BG or was desperately trying to get out in the worst way- there's no reason to think that at all. I think he came here with a plan, he succeeded and now he's ready to reap the reward and move on to the next challenge. The WF job presented itself and he took a 500% pay raise to do the same job, like any sane human being would do. It was an opportunity that he determined to be a good fit and had he passed, there's no guarantees on what else might have come along.
I hate to see him go, but as we know, that's life in the MAC. Win the conference then start the search for a new coach. It will always be that way. If you can't accept that reality, then go root for Ohio State or Alabama. I'll pass on that.
I hate to hear we are losing our coordinators, but that's usually how it works in the coaching business. If we weren't going to keep one as the head coach then it was unlikely that a new guy coming in from outside would want to keep them, rather than bringing in his own staff that he's already worked with before.
I don't presume to know who the best candidate would be, but I join the majority of posters in voicing my strong opposition to Fickell. Yes, he stepped into somewhat of a tough situation that maybe he wasn't ready for as the head coach down there, but it would be hard to argue that his tenure was anything other than a disaster. Judging by the way his defense peed themselves down the stretch this year, that doesn't instill any confidence. As far as the recruiting angle goes, I don't give it any weight. A toddler could recruit 4 and 5 star players to come to OSU. One phone call to most recruits and they are begging to sign up to get in that place and be treated like royalty by the countless minions that follow that program. If we find a candidate that's a good fit, I'm not that concerned if he has strong Ohio ties or not, as long as he's a good recruiter and has ties somewhere. I have no problem with getting local talent, as long as they can perform, but we have done very well with out of state players in recent years too, so I don't care where they come from.
Best wishes to DC in his new gig and best wishes to Kingston on the task before him.

This is the annual timing of when successful HC's change jobs. If you want to sit around for a few weeks and bask in the glory of the season's success, those step-up positions will already be filled. Anybody who follows college football should already know this.

Gimme a break with the Meyer idol worship...Alex Smith threw four collegiate passes the year before Meyer got there and he was a ** kid in HS...he didn't go to Utah to coach Alex Smith, he went to Utah to get the hell out of here. He had an unbeaten and ranked team for several weeks and found himself playing in front of about 500 people on senior night against EMU. He viewed this as a poor job when he came in a took the first chance to skedaddle on out of here. I don't fault him for that, but I'm not going to pretend he picked Utah as a destination because he had some magical premonition about the abilities of Alex Smith

Well, the middling coaches moving up to BCS jobs then create a second round of openings at "step up" jobs, but I still agree that if you get an offer now, then it is a good idea to go ahead and take it. The common argument is that if you wait, you're that much further behind on prep for next year. If memory serves, there's a recruiting dead period around Christmas/New Year's, so if you wait until after a bowl game and/or the second round of the coaching carousel, you miss out on the couple of weeks before that period that everyone else has.San Diego Falcon wrote:This is the annual timing of when successful HC's change jobs. Wake is a perfect fit for the man. Let him go and just be appreciative of the great work he did while he was here.

One of his goals was to win a bowl game. I'm fairly sure they talked of this often while practicing and in team meetings. Now that it has happened, where is he? Avoiding those embarrassing questions while making tracks for the east coast.Let him go and just be appreciative of the great work he did while he was here.
The next guy will come in and do the same thing, or get fired trying. It is a tough business.

Re: I guess we know how clawson really felt about BG
I said this right after BG won the MAC title and it was just starting to be talked about that it would also mean Clawson was likely gone.
I will trade in a head coach for a MAC title in football every damn time.
Let's face it: we just don't win them that often here. We used to, but not lately. It was 21 years between titles this past time, so if it means we win four titles in a row and have to hire new coaches each year, then I say: HALLELUJAH!!!!!! Because it also means the program is SOLID and continuing to bring in both solid players and coaches.
Yes it sucks to have to lose your coach when he's successful -- but that is the reality of life as the fan of a MAC school. Embrace the championship when you get one, and hope the next guy up can repeat this process next season!!!

Amen...
And the situation here is far better than it was in 2001 when Saint Urban got here and it's about to get even better after the actual plans for fixing or replacing the Doyt are finalized.

Re: I guess we know how clawson really felt about BG
I think the thing to remember is that if you don't want to lose the coach so quickly, then the pay needs to increase and the attendance needs to increase. If we continue to be successful, the attendance will get better. If we can get our pay up to 600-700k a year, we may stand a chance on keeping a coach for a little longer than we currently do. But, as it is now, you cannot blame a coach for wanting to get that pay raise. Clawson will now make some serious cash and have an opportunity to make one of the BIG bowls (a better chance than at BG).
ROLL ALONG!!!
