How about this scenario: Stud for HC, Scheier for OC and Nick Monroe for DC?

I'm a huge fan of Stud or Durkin. With both of our coordinators leaving for Wake, it's easier to go outside of the program and find someone. Stud would be a great fit.

Scheier has impressed me in interviews and with his passion for the program (see Twitter) since being named interim. But, I'm not sure he's ready to take over as head coach.. it's quite a big jump from ST. A move to OC should be enough to entice him to stay and maintain connections with our recruits. Plus, I think he'd get along fine with Stud. If what BGbolt has said is true, their personalities seem compatible.

I'm also a big fan of what Nick Monroe has done for our secondary. It's been a strength of this team ever since Clawson took over. Again, it would be enough of a jump for him professionally to entice him to stay, and I'm a huge fan of our defensive system.

Thoughts?

Agreed but you gotta let coach pick his guys. Does he even know either of them?

Coach studs market might not be too great as well. Considering he had oc duties taken from him at lsu. I'm not saying he wouldn't be a good head coach. Simply that this is probably the most likely landing spot for him if he ever is.

As the great poet and lyricist Miley Cyrus once intoned before going insane, it's the best of both worlds. A model like this means we can hedge our bets and secure the best qualities that both scenarios (inside/outside hire) have to offer. It's intriguing.

When Meyer took over BG he kept Beckman. When he took over Utah he kept Kyle Whittingham. When he took over Florida he kept Charlie Strong. When he took over OSU he kept Fickell. When he takes over the Browns he'll keep Ray Horton.

The thing I like about Stud, is at least there is a chance he would stay at BG, long term, versus someone that has no ties to BG or did not grow up in this area. Of course, it is not a bad thing that he is a great guy and TREMENDOUS recruiter!

+1. An alumnus his age shatters the if-he's-good-he'll-leave, if-he's-bad-he'll-stay-or-be-fired trap.

Every college job in America is a stepping stone to either another school or the NFL. Texas A&M almost lost Sumlin and still might. Alabama almost lost Nick Saban. I'm sick of BG and other MAC school having the burden of this label when it applies to everyone.

Writer,
So what you're really saying is that you'd like to see a NEW "Cradle of Coaches" .....in NW Ohio instead of SW Ohio which claims the title now? =D>

Coaching is always something that has intrigued me, not sure what the future will hold. A coach like Stud is what makes me want to be a coach. The impact a coach can have on someones life is remarkable, thats what makes me want to be that impact person.

I'd certainly take that scenario -- but I'd also be thrilled if they could find someone who would be extremely successful and loved BG and wanted to stay. I just don't see the second one as being very likely.

If you get an established coach who is a bit older and less likely to move on -- like Ohio did -- you also take a chance that they might not have quite the fire in their belly that a younger coach would have who is looking to move up. And you reach a certain plateau but never exceed it.

I want MAC titles and whatever is the best way to get those on a fairly regular basis. Going 21 years between trophies is way too long. At BG, it should never happen again. The program has too much history and tradition in the MAC. Hell, there's only one school that's won more titles than BG in football.

How it got to 21 years is almost freakish. Lots of close calls in there. Hopefully, that means BG is due for a string of titles or a cluster of them in a very short period of time.

Greg Studrawa guaranteed has one thing no other candidate has, LOVE for BG! This would not be a stepping stone for him. Greg could be our coach for the next 10-15 years.

Lets show our support for Coach Stud and turn BG into a MAC dynasty!

Hey Scott/All,

I was happy to see this thread when checking in on the Mac Champion Falcons…

I agree with Scott wholeheartedly about the endorsement for Stud…

I am not speaking for Scott, but we were both members of the winningest class in school history, even though we played for 3 different coaching staffs, so hopefully input from successful former Falcons will be taken into account.

I wrote and sent a letter to the AD, hoping that my insight would be considered… I won't paste the whole letter, but I think a few points are pretty important to consider…

For 95% of coaches Bowling Green/Any Mac team will be considered a career stepping stone… we all know about the conference and resources, and that big scale college football is a business first, sport second. I am very very confident that most coaches, including the following list (which could be a lot longer)- Clawson, Meyer, Beckman, Mullen, Hevesy, Gonzales, even Greg Brandon, all would have treated bowling green as a stepping stone to high salaries and to 'make' their name provided enough success at BG…. A few already have… A part of why this is the case is because the business side of things has muted most loyalty… most coaches are given breaks by other coaches, and usually don't have much loyalty to specific universities, unless they have something invested in the school.

After playing for all of the coaches that I did that have now grown into other positions, and being an honest observant of the college football, its been my thoughts that the only way for a Mac team to retain a solid coach and create a 'dynasty' if you will, is to have an Alumni take hold and lead the Falcons. Ideally one from the area if at all possible.

You have two of those candidates in Durkin and Studrawa. I would be happy to see either of these men considered for the position, and I would like to state an overwhelming endorsement for Studrawa to be named coach. Not only is he is what bg is about, and I believe he would weather any negative storm, and more importantly stay loyal during successful times.

I played with Durkin for 1 year and think he should be considered as well, but I have not been around him in several years so I have not seen the progression in his coaching IQ, so I can't exactly vouch for him as a head coach, but he has been involved in top tier programs (Stanford & Florida) so hopefully he will be a great candidate as well.

Back to Stud, who I believe should be the first interview… it may not be a sexy name to anyone outside the program, Its clear that he has been around the biggest programs, games and recruits. Not only would he contribute greatly to the family atmosphere of BG, he would be able to nurture and grow relationships with high school coaches in the region, which would weigh heavy in local recruiting battles with UT, Miami, Kent, OU, even Cincy and out of state schools. High school coaches care about creating men out of their players, and a head coach like Stud would matter to high school coaches

Something to consider… Matt Campbell is the head coach at UT and has not lost to BG since he took the job… Who gave Campbell his first job and was crucial in teaching him how to coach at the Division 1 level? Greg Studrawa. I saw this first hand as Campbell was Studs assistant O Line coach when I was a starting tackle in 2004. I believe all of Campbells previous experience was all D3, from my memory (could be wrong).

I know its not an easy job, but I think it would be a travesty to not consider/interview stud. I played for Mccall, Brandon and many other 'football' minds, and to be completely honest, a true players coach and motivator like stud is the coach I want to play for. Core qualities and accountability lasts longer than coaching gimmicks/trends.

Personally I have never sent direct input to the Athletic Department, but I was surprised that Stud was not interviewed the last time the position was available, and I think it would be a travesty if Stud was not considered for the position, so I felt I needed to speak up.

Hopefully the process is taken very seriously and the next coach embraces the past, present and future of BG.

That's a very good point, Andrew. Great to hear your insights and perspective.

At some point, it would be nice to get a coach who wants to stay in Bowling Green and take the time to build a team that routinely plays itself into the Top 25. In other words, someone who is more of a Joe Paterno builder than a mercenary. If we truly want to elevate the program, that's what we will need at some point.

There are a lot of good coaches out there. This is a great coaching opportunity. Chris Kingston must be full of ideas right now.

I think it would upset most here if Stud and Durkin weren't atleast spoken to. They better have a very good reason (Durkin and Stud not interested would be a major one) for not hiring in family this time.
