Agreed. His EIU press conference was much better.Falcon Commander wrote:that entire Presser was short and pretty weak IMO.
No family introduction (by Dino)
No appreciation shown to EIU
No media questions (worth anything)

Re: Dino Babers
Where does this whole notion of "he can't talk to them for 3 months" come from? Yes, they can't have "organized" practice until the 12-15 they are allowed in spring, but he and more importantly, strength and conditioning people, position coaches, etc . . . will be overseeing individual workouts, weight training and the like. Offense will be installed in the spring and somewhere around the second weekend of April we will get out first glimpse of it. Just because they don't have "organized" practice does not mean "no contact"

Re: Dino Babers
Unless he's a candidate for the EIU job...I would suspect Kim MCCloud will be in themix as Baber's DC. They go back to working at Baylor together. His EIU OC, Sterlin Gilbert was a HS coach in Texas before Babers hired him. He doesn't seem like a good fit here unless he comes in as a QB coach. Havinga guy with Texas connections might be interesting from a recruiting standpoint.
And Option is correct...the new staff can speak with the players before April

I'm guessing his kids are all in school...no need to have them there for this IMO.

The offense they run is very unique and he said he specifically picked assistants who were well-versed in the scheme, hence the Texas HS coach who had done clinic work with the Baylor coaches.
The salary pool at BGSU will be much higher so it'll be interesting to see who comes in. (Insert mandatory plug to keep Nick Monroe)

Yeah..but a HS coach with two years at an FCS school might be overmatched by FBS caliber defenses. That's why I would hope they get a guy with miore experience. I'd love for Monroe to stay...but he and McCloud's resumes look similar except McCloud has two years as an FCS DC, so I'm not sure there's a spot unless he stays as DB coach.

Re: Dino Babers
Why would you think he can't talk with his current players (which is how I interpreted your last comment). Yes, there IS a "quiet time" from the 23rd thru Jan. 3 (not sure of exact dates), but THAT is in terms of calling recruits and/or possible recruits NOT your current team. This is to give ALL kids and schools some time off from this until the last frantic push starts til the 1st Wed. in Feb. (Natl. Signing Day).Globetrotter wrote:Then Babers can't talk to his players for 3 months and we lose recruits and players may transfer......jpfalcon09 wrote:That's why I prefer they waited until after the bowl to announce a new coach. Awkwardness is what comes with that decision and that shouldn't have stopped them from truly toasting this moment for the program. This should have been a big, celebratory occasion to introduce him to the fan base. Half-measures do nothing for the old coach or the new coach.
Furthermore, this hiring time will give him time to get a staff together BEFORE some other staffs are being assemble AND start some recruiting contacts for BG prior to the Down time. Think what Clawson's co-ordinaters were doing for Wake almost immediately after his hiring.

Re: Dino Babers
Was this really the best selection, pretty quick decision

Re: Dino Babers
This is a terrific match of coach/program at exactly the right time. He makes a great impression and I think we're going to win a lot of games in a very, very exciting fashion.
That being said, hopefully the remark about the politeness of the team (re: sitting straight up/attentive) was meant as a casual ice-breaker or attempt at humor and not something we should read too much in to. Every coaches' dream is a polite team that demonstrates respect, especially when making a first impression to a brand new coach. The horror stories and telltade signs of a bad program are when coaches walk in and players don't behave this way. That's a credit to Clawson, Scheier and the kids.

I think I was confusing the recruiting part but I though that was the rule. I guess I was incorrect. There is some rule either at the HS level or something where you can't be in contact with your players.OptionQB wrote:Where does this whole notion of "he can't talk to them for 3 months" come from? Re: Dino Babers
I would love to keep coaches Hunter, Durkin and McDaniel. I don't them personally, but their position groups have played very well in their stead. I'm not opposed to Coach Monroe or nearly as infatuted with him as many of you are, but it's unlikely that more than 2-3 of the current guys would be asked to stay. A lot will depend on EIU's process of selecting their next guy and whether or not it comes from their staff.
