Three of our four losses by 3, 3 and 1 point
Three of our four losses by 3, 3 and 1 point
The close losses in one-score games got us again. Hats off to Pitt, they earned it and took it from us. We just couldn't stop them. It's been awhile since I have seen a team ram the ball down our throat like that.
GO BG!!!

Close losses are almost always related to coaching, but in the case of BG over the past couple seasons I think it had as much to do with the culture of losing that Clawson and the coaches have had to try and reverse -- which isn't easy to do.
When you've had a program mired in losing games, and one that just seems to find ways to lose, even when they seem to have a game won, it's always in the back of the minds of the players, "Are we going to let this one slip away, too?"
It's really hard to reverse that to the point that teams truly start believing they can win any game, regardless of what the circumstances are. You see it in winning programs all the time -- and you see the reverse in programs that always seem to lose the close ones.
Hopefully, between what happened this year in how the team closed out the MAC season and with the coaching philosophies of the new staff, we'll see this turned around completely next season.

Re: Three of our four losses by 3, 3 and 1 point
The good thing about BG over the last few years is many of our wins have been by larger margins of victory. Meaning, we're handing it to some teams, which is great. That said, when we're going toe to toe and trading punches with a team for four quarters, we are often the one being dealt the knockout blow and not being the one who is delivering it. And our record over the last five years in those exact situations proves it.
The main reason I went back and looked at our results in those games was to me, it often seemed like the losses overshadowed the wins. I thought I might have just been focusing on the losses more and thought maybe it was actually close to being a split. I was actually surprised to see it was that bad. Obviously after seeing the results, it stands reason for feeling like we always come up short in those cases - because we actually do.
