The Great Lyric Debate
The Great Lyric Debate
Something that has been bothering me for a very long time, what are the "official" lyrics to the end of Ay-Ziggy-Zoomba.
Is it:
"Roll along, you BG warriors! Roll along, and win for B-G-S-U!"
OR
"Roll along, you BG warriors! Roll along, and fight for B-G-S-U!"
I've always been taught it's "Win," but there's always a few that sing "Fight." Which one is it?

I doubt there's an official version upon which everyone agrees. The athletic department website has it "win for B-G-S-U" but in marching band I learned it "fight for B-G-S-U." I can't find my handy-dandy FMB handbook to double-check it, but I'm pretty sure that's what all we bandies sing--anyone have theirs to check up on me? (As opposed to in the fight song, where it's "win for Bowling Green.") So I guess it depends on who you'd rather believe, lol.
Anyone have a more definitive answer?

Actually here is where things begin to get interesting. Located in the music library are the original scores to all of the Falcon songs, lyrics included. I was asked by Linda, the head of the music library, to recopy the Alma Mater into a more eye pleasing format, rather than the tiny hand written score. The sheet she gave me also has the lyrics to the fight song and Ay Zig. If you ever get a chance to see this document you really should. To answer the Ay Zig debate, the line reads "Roll along you B. G. Warriors, Roll along and fight for BGSU.
Here is where things deviate from the common rule. Here are the actual lyrics to Forward Falcons
Forward Falcons, Forward Falcons,
Fight for victory,
Show our spirit, make them fear it,
Fight for dear Bee Gee,
Forward Falcons, Forward Falcons,
Make the contest keen,
Hold up the fame of our mighty name
And win for Bowling Green
Just something to think about...

Dear B-G??
Hold up the fame???
Gah!
Behold as the infrastructure of BGSU's school songs crashes to a screeching halt! (Don't mind my mixed metaphors.)
Shall I bring up the question of whether the Alma Mater says, "When all is just a mem'ry" or "When all is but a mem'ry"?

It's "When all is just a mem'ry..." but the interesting thing to note is in the repeat of the opening strain. "...Ever dearer in our hearts our University." I was taught that it was "...Ever dearer to our hearts our University." Fun stuff.

Apparently AZZ lyrics were pussified. The lyrics are usually found in media guides, so it should be possible to zero in on what year it happened.

"Ever dearer IN our hearts." That's the way I learned it.
"Fight for BG." I learned it and always thought it was WN for BGSU. However, I kinda like "fight" better than "win"...... even though it's always better to win but I digress.
Hold up the fame of or mighty name is correct. I just don't sing it like that any more. I'm ashamed to say that I sing the "shout out her name so she knows you......" well you get the idea.

I have the alternative lyrics in my head. I can't comment on this. I thought it was "Fight for OLD Bee Gee." But then again, when this song was written, BG wasn't all THAT old.Forward Falcons, Forward Falcons,
Fight for victory,
Show our spirit, make them fear it,

I sing it "fight for B-G-S-U," "Old B-G," "shout out the fame" and "dearer to our hearts."
And I ain't gonna change it for nobody!

I have a question about the Ziggy Zoomba lyrics and spelling. ..
I have conformed to "Ay" as the first part and I pronounce it "I" or "eye", is that how everyone else does??
That said, and if we agree on how to pronounce it, why has it been spelled "Ay"?? Shouldn't it by spelled like the word "aye"? Before websites or t-shirts or mugs with the lyrics on it I always spelled it "Aye Ziggy Zoomba", just wondering if that has ever been in question. . .
Oh and I learned the song, from my pops(class of 68) as FIGHT for BGSU. . .
