Can Orr save himself?
Almost all of us, myself included, predicted the men's team wouldn't win 10 games this year. The team is over halfway to that number and hasn't enterred conference play just yet. I also know that most, if not all, of us are ready to see Coach Orr out the door at the end of the season. But, do you think there is a possibility Coach Orr could save his job? What would he have to do this season to get offerred a new contract for next year? Or, do you think he's gone regardless?
Some fun discussion given how this team is outperforming what we all assumed they were capable of.

If he won the MAC tournament and made the NCAA tournament for the first time in however many years it is, they'd extend him, my guess is 2 years. If anyone disagrees they do not understand the way college athletics work. Don't worry though because this will not happen

A lot of us said he wouldn't get 10 wins this season, but that looks completely possible.BGfalcon2010 wrote:If he won the MAC tournament and made the NCAA tournament for the first time in however many years it is, they'd extend him, my guess is 2 years. I was thinking the same thing about the tourney. If he manages to drag us to the NCAA tournament, we wouldn't get rid of him.

Re: Can Orr save himself?
Only if he wins the MAC Tournament. Period. And if that happened (which never, ever has for BG) and we made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 19-frickin-68, then we replace the new Falcon statue outside of the Stroh Center with a bronze statue of Louis Orr shrugging his shoulders with "to God be the glory" inscribed in the marble beneath it!

Re: Can Orr save himself?
I wouldn't re-up him if he won the national title. Anything he accomplishes this year is dumb luck and fools gold because he finally found a player that actually made himself better. I find it tough to believe the staff is responsible for Holmes progression since they have failed with every other player they've brought in.
In the end I still don't think this team sniffs 15 wins nor the Mac title, so it's irrelevant.

I agree, but if (and no I don't see it remotely possible)....if.....BG won the MAC Tournament, it would be proof there is a God for anyone who believes otherwise. Re: Can Orr save himself?
I thought this team would win 6 games tops...I would still look to replace him. What is the average attendance at the Stroh? 1,600 a game? The place seats almost 5,000 and we have twice as many empty seats as those filled. We need a complete overhaul from the ground up, IMO.

Hey, we won the MAC in football, we won the MAC in baseball, let's make it a trifecta and win the MAC in basketball! Men's basketball that is. We can all dream, right???
Does anyone know if any school in the conference has had a men's team that has won the MAC in all three sports in the same year? Or if any school even won the big two in football and basketball? I can't recall that happening. Two years ago Ohio won in basketball and played for the title in football but lost. It often seems like when a school makes a run in one sport such as football with teams like NIU and CMU as recent examples (those two have been West Champions in 8 of the last 10 years), that their basketball teams were pretty down. Maybe that's a good sign for BG football for years to come. Our basketball team has been crap for years. Maybe now that we've broken through in football we can put together a nice several year run like NIU and CMU did recently.

This team is reminding me a lot of 2006-07, or Dakich's last team. That team blew away preseason expectations in non conf play but as soon as conference play started the lack of depth showed up. Martin Samarco willed the team to wins but couldn't do the same as conference play dragged on. His final home game he did have a great game and a BG win but the team was a no show in Cleveland.

This team is going to be fun to watch for individual skills and actually the team play is better than we have seen in a while. If they manage to win the MAC with the depth and personnel present it would be national coach of the year worthy. I like this team but they look like a project team for the future of the program. I think attendance, campus and community interest, and Coach Orr's trend over the years indicates that he will be replaced if he fails to win the MAC regular season, tournament or gets the elusive NCAA at-large bid.
I still like the guy and simply wished that we saw the same fire he seems to be displaying this year along with the team offense and aggressive defense. I think those factors would have helped recruiting and made a decision more difficult if not necessary.

I think you're right on target. We DO have a significant talent among Holmes, Parker, Clarke, Henderson, Tisdale, and Sealey, ...and I can't quite figure out why so many people say that this year's team is so horrible. I think that people too used to saying it during the days of Kraus, Crawford, Erger, and Brown that they don't know how to respond to having guys that can run and jump.FalconTurf wrote:This team is going to be fun to watch for individual skills and actually the team play is better than we have seen in a while. This is a decent team that is learning to play together. If our lack of depth doesn't catch up to us, we'll be formidable in the MAC. Skillwise, our primary weakness is shooting.

Re: Can Orr save himself?
Primary weakness for so many college basketball teams is having the shooter(s). The speed at which the defense moves makes it difficult for a guy to get set for his shot. Must be able to flow to open areas and then have a very quick release or the ability to shoot off balance. I thought Chauncey or Henderson would be the candidates but rarely a freshman.BleedOrange wrote:I think you're right on target. Depth is the largest obstacle.

I know we have guys who can run and jump, but we don't have an abundance of guys who can actually play basketball. Holmes is obviously turning into one of the best players in the Mac. Parker is developing nicely into a slasher. Clarke has talent but is so careless with the ball and goes through long stretches of forced shots and horrid shooting.BleedOrange wrote:I think you're right on target. Black, Lyshe, Tisdale, and Henderson are all blah players. Some talent, sure, but none are polished basketball players.
I find this team much more entertaining than last year because it's not crawford and Calhoun hogging the ball all game long. Throw in the development of Holmes and this season is already more fun than last year.
However, I still don't think this team is very good, and tonight's first half was downright painful.
