We've slipped out of the top group now...I don't mind "scurrying" for a couple hundred grand... it takes very little time, can't hurt to vote.... MOST of the higher ranking schools right now are some lesser knowns.

The release says the money (as noted, a pittance in the grand scheme of things) will go to the general scholarship funds of the respective schools. This would make much more sense if it went directly to the student fan organizations themselves (Fanatics, Bleacher Creatures, etc.) rather than lumped into a generic blob. They have been the ones driving this (with another 30 days still to go, ugh) and it's only right that they get rewarded for their efforts.
