Already posted on 2014 recruits thread. Need both sides of the story before condeming anyone!
Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
This is a pretty tough situation. Clearly the new staff wasn't enamored with this kid. And if BG was his only scholarship offer, I can understand why.
But it's never good to burn any sorts of bridges. I'm not convinced that a new coaching staff should honor all scholarship offers set out by a previous staff. It is not in the best interest of the new staff, the player, or the program to bring a kid on board that they don't want here. If that is going to be the case then clearly it should be laid out to the recruit as soon as the decision is made, but we don't know if that happened here or not.

If the 'verbals' that are listed in the Recruiting thread are accurate, we have 6 DBs committed, including this young man. It may just be a case where Babers decided that was too many DBs and he wants to give out scholarships at other positions (like OL since we lost two commitments there). Anyway, not a good situation. Looks like a breakdown of communication on both ends.

The problem here is not that bg is not honoring the scholarship it's that nobody from BG ever contacted the coach or player. Now did carney offer the kid without clawsons blessing? No idea but the kid and coach thought he had a solid offer so Babers should have been upfront with the kid and coach

Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
Two sides to every story and the truth always lies somewhere in the middle. Coach is pissed because one of his players now has lost out on an FBS opportunity so he bad mouths the university. If Babers did drop the ball, I'd be disappointed, but this sounds like a simple lack of communication between both parties. Also have to wonder if recent commits by Lewis et al has led to some players sadly being left on the outside looking in. That's the way it goes sometimes.

Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
Communication goes both ways. When messages aren't returned immediately that's basically a message right there, a message that should have prompted other plans to be arranged by the high school coach sooner than a week before signing day. It's standard practice in recruiting, particularly when there has been staff turnover, to never assume anything or take something as important as a scholarship offer for granted. In this case, it sounds like the coach did and is now looking for someone else to blame.
Bridge burning goes both ways too. If schools/coaches are going to get called out by name at the slighest misunderstanding (a misunderstanding where culpability is yet to be determined) it makes other schools less likely to deal with him and offer his players, especially those on the margins.
There are tens of thousands of high schools with over a million football players. There are 125 FBS schools with 25 full-ride scholarships to give out per year. Ratios like that mean we shouldn't have to suffer fools.

If there was any doubt that this is agenda-based, biased journalism ('Is there another kind?' as Lt. Colonel Nathan Jessup might quip), the Erie reporter who "broke" the "story" favored the lone tweet in response to the story that opined it was "a classless move by BG." Glad reporters are not taking sides on stories they're supposed to be reporting objectively.
Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
More fun: the sports editor of the paper that originally ran the story identifies himself as a "Northern Illinois grad" on his Twitter page. Keep peeling back that onion...

Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
Babers is seeming much more like Urban Meyer than Dave Clawson. Just seems like an ends justfiies the means kind of guy. This combined with his attitude with the QB and just in general about how arrogant he seems about his offense, I don't think will sit well with what the BG kingdom has grown used to in Clawson. It's early though and these things are, as many have you said, just one side of the story. I hope it works out but I would never pull a scholarship from a kid. It's classless IMO. You make due with what was handed to you.

Interesting....an NIU grad and he can read? The other thing about the way this story was reported is the use of the term "recently"....that's not very precise language. Was the kid told a week ago...two weeks ago..two days ago?
Jesus...Globe...the guy has been a fu**ing month and said maybe three things to the media and your already passing judgment? We don't even have half the details of this "story" and you're passing judgment? When Anthon Samuel claimed he wanted to come back you were OK with the idea that Clawson should have booted someone to make room for him....how would this be different?
If I was walking into this job I would certainly pull an offer from a kid if I didn't think he matched my system. You aren't doing him or yourself any favors by bringing him here to sit for a year or whatever before he transfers.

Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
You are right about Samuel. I was willing to boot a kid to get him back if that was necessary although I had assumed someone would leave the team and open up a spot before. I see the two as different here but I am not sure they are that different. Just seems wrong to give a kid his dream then take it away.Flipper wrote:Interesting....an NIU grad and he can read? How about everyone let our new coach make it through spring ball before running him off ....

Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
Some things don't seem to add up with this article....seems to me that I'd read before (several months ago) that this kid's "verbal" wasn't clear back in July...Supposedly, he'd verballed, but they had no record of it or some such thing.
Also, I thought that Hinkel (the TE) had already SIGNED a LOI....could be wrong but that's what I recalled seeing, perhaps on one of the recruiting sites.
