BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
There is definitely an agenda in that story. It's not uncommon for players recruited by outgoing coaching staffs to end up going elsewhere after a coaching change at a school -- and it's even more common for players to switch their verbals from one school to another when there's a coaching change.
So why is this being portrayed as some huge injustice?
It's not. It's football and that is just how things happen, sometimes.
That high school coach knows it, and that player knows it, too. For some reason, he's not getting any love from any other BCS program, so he's screaming "victim" and the coach and paper are right there urging him on.
Sorry, not buying it.
The new coaching staff has a right to take the players THEY want to give scholarships to, and they have absolutely no legal or moral obligation to maintain a verbal agreement that was given by the previous staff. Everybody knows this.
Time to get over it and move on.
And if this coach wants to hold a grudge and potentially deny future players a chance to play D-1 football, then that's on him. There are plenty of very good high school football programs in Ohio that can more than adequately replace his school.

I dont think anyone is writing them off. Just pointing out some observations.MarkL wrote:How about everyone let our new coach make it through spring ball before running him off ....

This article should have never been in the Toledo Blade. It's a complete joke.
Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
Let's have Wagner ask some real questions looking for real answers from Louis Orr. Locals have been waiting 7 years for those. Not some sob story from a gym teacher in PA with an agenda.

They can talk about the situation without naming specific recruits.
I think it's pretty lame to not give a guy a scholarship who verballed. Others don't seem to think so but there better be a very good circumstance and not that he just doesn't fit. You owe something to that kid who took himself off the market for your team.

You have no idea what the situation was. Considering Kingston just tweeted that 100% of the scholarships were honored, I'd say you have two sides to a story. My issue is with Wagner. Where is confirmation the kid had an offer? Must have been too busy working on MAC Power Rankings with BG always lower than they should be to provoke a reaction. Want a reaction? Go after the basketball coach you and everyone else have given a free pass to? Seems like a much better way to piss off an athletic department.

TWITTER: Chris Kingston (ChrisKingstonBG): "Ready 4 National Signing Day next week. Strong move 4 @CoachBabersBG 2 honor 100% of the scholarship offers from the previous HC #FirstClass"
I have a hard time not believing Kingston, but that is just my opinion.

+1.
Here's to Wagner and The Blade for publishing it!

Reading between the lines of what Kingston tweeted..."offers from the previous HC". He did not say "staff"...he did not say "coaches"...he said "HC". I take that to mean Carney may have told the kid he was in, but Clawson didn't.

So you think Carney went Rogue and no one bothered to clean it up before February although people were reporting him as a commit back in July?
As for Wagner he should have contacted the school for comment. Should have also contacted or should following the tweet contact the coach in Erie. But if he did contact the school and they didn't comment, even a vague tweet like Kingston's that's on the school

Can't say I'm happy it see this or read about this. I would venture to guess the real story lies somewhere in between. But whether BG did or didn't do something to frown at concerning this situation, we do come out of this with a black eye with what was said and published. There's nothing positive and only negative stemming from this whether we deserved it or not.

Going rogue? I don't think it's anything that dramatic...Tyree may have thought he had a firm offer when he didn't. What was said to get him to that point isn't known and since Mark Carney doesn't work here any more probably never will be. The hit piece...or if you prefer...article...didn't really get into the timeline of when all this came to a head or who the folks in Erie were contacting. Looks like the only thing the current staff might have done wrong was not tell the kid he didn't have an actual offer quickly enough and it's not even clear they did that.
What seems clear is that the argument here is with Carney...why this HS coach wants to restrict scholarship opportunities out of spite for an issue he has with someone no longer involved in the process is beyond me.
I do like the way Kingston handled this. He addressed the situation quickly and in as much detail as possible.
I don't know why Wagner went with this...running garbage like this serves no purpose other then antagonizing people. Great idea if you want an adversarial relationship with the people you're covering.

That weak offer was on the internet for six months. Someone at bg should have cleared it up if that was the case.
Re: BG coaches no longer welcome at Erie prep
I'm confident this will all be resolved soon in a class act manner. Kingston is already on it. Once national signing day comes around, I bet this will blow over.
But I agree, the Blade was very silly for not doing better research on this or waiting until national signing day when BG can officially comment on recruits.

Crap like this is why I don't even really follow recruiting. It's all hearsay and rumor, even when it's OFFICIAL.
We don't see it as often at BG, but it's not uncommon at all for kids to "Verbal" to schools that haven't even actually offered them a scholarship. I know OSU and the other big schools have it all the time. The kids get some recruiting material and think that's the same as getting an offer. And the websites that report "offers" are no more legit. The schools/coaches themselves aren't allowed to mention anything about anybody, so anytime somebody is listed as having an "offer" it's done because the kid says he had one.
There is no such thing as a confirmed offer or confirmed anything int he world of college recruiting. This is no different than a he said/she said rape case where the guy says it was consenting and she says it wasn't. Unless the former coach comes out and says, "Yeah I gave that kid a solid scholarship offer, can't believe they reneged on it" there is no story here.
God I hate recruiting...it's the most important part of running a college football/basketball program, but it's ugly and nothing but rumor and hearsay. They should start covering it on TMZ...
