UB at BG

Post by BGSU33 »

BG has dropped 4 of its last 5 at home and Orr has only 4 more home games (5 if we somehow host a first round game in the MAC) remaining. I'm not even going to bother to watch as I want to actually enjoy my Sunday and the Super Bowl later.

This BG team is hard to figure. They have beaten some very good opposition - OU on the road, Buffalo come to mind. The question needs to be ask, What if they win the MAC Tournament and go to the NCAA? Fire or not renew coach Orr's contract? Keep in mind the team hasn't been to the NCAAs since before most of you were born. And the odds of getting there are probably about 20-1.
Based on Attendance and general lack of enthusiasm in and around the community, I think they would let him go. But it would make for quite a debate. :|

I don't care if we go on a 11 game win streak and win the NC Orr needs to go.

Great win!! We finally played a full game and battled the entire time. Sad to see so much potential go 10-11..

Bobby Hurley was the difference in that game. He basically lost it for Buffalo. =D>

I agree with you BUT the key for BG was making those pesky free throws after he opened the door. Going 5 of 6 on that possession with Holmes getting fouled again after getting the rebound was certainly the turning point.

Multiple years of BG teams that are hard to figure (aka Inconsistent), lack of enthusiasm from the fan base and unfortunately a rather lightly stocked cupboard of players leading most to agree that the player base needs to be reloaded in part due to unused scholarships would be the main reasons I would have difficulty offering him a contract if I were the AD.

It was refreshing to see us make a conscious effort to feed Holmes over and over in the last 10 minutes of the game or so. I think I saw more post entry passes yesterday than the rest of the Orr era combined.

Also refreshing to see the team & coaches (mainly coach Stone) show a little attitude during and after the game. Maybe a game like that becomes a turning point for the team.

There is no debate at all in my mind. I wouldn't extend Orr a new contract offer if he won the national title. The ONLY reason I renewed my season tickets this year is to keep my same seats for next year when we have a new coach. The games are boring. The program is boring. It's become nothing more than filler to give us something to do in the winter doldrums. To give Orr another contract would be mind numbingly stupid.

If he is back next year I will NOT be attending any games. It's bad enough that we've had to watch this crap for the past 3 years just because we're too cheap to buy his ass out, but to pay more to see it AGAIN? Screw that. I can't fathom Kingston being nearly that stupid, so I really don't even think it's worth discussion.

As to yesterday's game. Gameball to Hurley. His team was holding onto a 2 point lead and he took all that momentum and handed it on a silver platter to our team. MAJOR props to Parker for nailing those two freebies, then Holmes for going 3-4 on the upcoming free throws as well. Unlike most games where we find ourselves in that position, yesterday the team hit the shots and made the stops they needed to in order to get the win.

Clarke played his best game as a Falcon for sure. Under control, distributed the ball, and took his shots when they were there rather than forcing them.
Parker was outstanding with some good finishes in traffic.
Holmes was about what we expect out of him, which is good.

I'll even give a shout out to Gomez. Black got himself on the bench with fouls most of the game and Gomez came through with 20+ minutes. And while he still looks goofy as hell out there he was able to fight for some rebounds and keep some balls alive at key times. Nothing outstanding, but for a guy to play so many more minutes than he's used to, and not make a total fool of himself, I'll give him some props.

Great post as usual, I completely agree on Gomez and he could be the key to next year as he will likely start at the 5 or see major minutes there anyway just to keep guys off of Holmes. He isn't as good as Cam Black by any means but the drop off wasn't all that noticeable last night. I hope he keeps improving and we get a solid 15-25 minutes a night from him the next 2 years. If he is ever going to be anything better then adequate he will have to get stronger and more aggressive in the post.

You truly wouldn't bring him back if we won the National Championship? If you actually believe that, you're delusional. No team would get rid of their coach immediately after winning a title. Now, I could see us giving him a 1 year contract because of that win, but nothing more than that. I could also see us not bringing him back if he does anything other than win the National Championship.

If by some chance the team were to win the MAC tournament and go to the NCAA tournament, I think you extend the contract by a year and no more. I don't see how you can let a coach go, even with Orr's lack of career success, for achieving what we have not in decades and achieving the chief team season goal. Extend him by a year and unless we repeat, no further extensions.

That being said, I wouldn't be surprised by one and done. I hope we win at least one tournament game.

And nice win! The team is talented and I do believe they can beat most conference teams if they play to their potential. They rarely play anything near that level which makes following the team so frustrating. But when they do play to their potential, it makes for excitement.
