Akron at BG - do we Just forfeit right now???
Akron at BG - do we Just forfeit right now???
Well, we're now in jeapordy of entering a new decade since our last home win vs Akron as the Zips are going for their 10th consecutive win in Bowling Green. Yes, that's 10 consecutive home losses, not road losses, HOME losses - for BG to a fellow MAC school. And if that's not bad enough, BG's has also lost 16 of its last 17 games to Akron. No wonder why the game was picked up for TV, with that kind of success it saves some of the Zips fans from having to drive to "Jar Arena West." And some people actually wondered why Keith Dambrot was so supportive in his comments of Louis Orr last year. Are you kidding me??? If you had that kind of success against someone would you want to see him go??? Hell no!
GO BG!!!
Re: Akron at BG - do we Just forfeit right now???
Lol. This reminds me of one of my all time favorite DD post-game radio show quotes. Regarding (then) Marshall coach Greg White: "I hope he's at Marshall as long as I'm here!"
LONG LIVE THE MONGOOSE!!
Re: Akron at BG - do we Just forfeit right now???
The misery vs Akron continues.....my God we can't beat them. This has to be our most lopsided streak in school history against another conference opponent and it has to be right up there in MAC history for dominance over one team by another.
GO BG!!!

I'm starting to like this team a lot. Are they frustrating at times? Yes. Are they maddeningly inconsistent? Yes. Do they drive me crazy? Yes. But, they worked their a$$es off tonight, and that's all I really care about. I like these guys -- they are fun to watch at times, and you can never count them out.

Re: Akron at BG - do we Just forfeit right now???
There aren't many people coming out to the games, so clearly our opinion is in the minority, but I have to say I have actually enjoyed some parts of this season as well. We have long, HORRIBLE stretches, which are boring as all hell. And we have one of these stretches almost every game (usually coincides with the opening tip), but we also play some VERY exciting basketball from time to time. Honestly, it's worth coming the games to me just to watch Holmes rock the rim a couple times a night. That dunk he had last night was unbelievable...one of the top 10 BG dunks I can remember (I'd be remiss to not put Soler's pregame dunk in that list).
I don't know where the confusion was, but I thought the men's game was at 2 yesterday (maybe looked at the time from last week's game?)...and I ended up watching the women's game. They completely destroyed Miami, and I was seriously considering just going home rather than sticking around to see the men's game. (this is where I insert my opinion of women's basketball was only strengthened by yesterday's game, I won't go into details because when I do I get PMs blasting me) Well I decided I didn't actually have anything to do anyhow, so we ran over to BW3 for a few beers then came back for the Men's game, and I'm so glad I did. Yeah, they lost (again), but it was a VERY fun game to watch. We (again) dug ourselves into a ridiculous hole off the bat, but the team battled and got themselves into the game. To the point that Clarke hit that miracle 3 (banked, no less) and for about 7.8 seconds I thought we might actually have a chance to win the game. Of course, in Louis Orr-era fashion our team doesn't defend, expecting the Zips to take a TO, and we end up losing on a big basket by Diggs (who I thought played a fantastic game).
Holmes was a beast with a double double and some sweet rim rattling.
Black hit a couple miracle hook shots, to get some offense, and played damn good defense on Treadwell who has typically destroyed us (even when he wasn't considered their best player).
Clarke was very good attacking the rim and making some plays, but damn that dude needs to get those turnovers under control. I don't know why he just goes into "spaz mode" for at least a few stretches every game. Globe is right, he'd be so much better playing alongside a real PG than being asked to be that guy himself.
Parker made some nice plays as well.
It was a loss, and another one to the Zips, but at least it was a game that made me quite glad I stuck around to watch it. The team can at least be entertaining. I'm excited to see what a new voice can do for Clarke, Holmes, and Parker next year. This team is in dire need of areal PG though...I hope he can find one in his shortened recruiting time.

In this regard I feel sorry for Coach Orr and his staff. The above is clearly what he thought would happen most of the time and things would be great in the Stroh. It hasn't happened enough. i wish him a much better experience in his next endeavor.

No one seems to be discussing them playing Sealey for 6 minutes and burning an entire year of eligibility for him.
Re: Akron at BG - do we Just forfeit right now???
The Falcons should have won that game against Akron, and would have if not for the miserable refereeing of D.J. Carstensen, Frank Spencer, and Chris Beaver.
How can you explain 10 bothched calls in the second half alone? Are they corrupt or incompetant? Walking, three seconds, moving screens, holding, charging, flailing arms striking heads and shoulders, pushing, and goal-tending—all in the second half. BG did not get a call for these infractions until 3:11 remained in the game. What good does it do to play these games if the contest is not fair and/or the refereeing is not competant? Referees are unaccountable for their actions. They run off the floor, get quickly to their vehicles and depart without having to explain themselves or answer any questions.

Globe, I don't have an issue with them playing Sealey.
I don't know what his academic situation is, but maybe he's on course to graduate and doesn't want a 5th year anyhow? Maybe he's had enough with collegiate hoops and doesn't care to play another year?
On the surface, sure I'd like to have him back next year, but if he talked it with the coaches and said he's healthy enough to go and doesn't have interest in trying for a 5th year, then why hold him back? The only reason I'd have any issue with it is if he told them that he was healthy, but didn't want to play because he wants a 5th year and they responded with TS, you're playing. Obviously, we'll never know what exactly went on behind closed doors, but I think it's fair to assume he wanted to play, knew that it would cost him any shot at a 5th year, and that's that.

Re: Akron at BG - do we Just forfeit right now???
Sealey has now played in 7 of 23 games. That now makes him over the 30% rule. He is now ineligible for a medical redshirt. Also, he has now played in a game after the half way point in the season, also forgoing a redshirt. If he continued to not play he could have been eligible but not anymore. Maybe he was frustrated enough and doesn't want to play another year. Maybe Coach Orr wasn't aware of the rules.

HammB,
I want to believe everything is legit and he just didn't want to play for another year but I just don't have enough confidence in Orr understanding the rules enough to believe Orr didn't just play him not knowing it would cost him an entire year. I wish the U or beat writers would update us about it. Carle is usually good about sending over info on twitter so I will see what he says.

One thing to keep in mind. Not all injuries are guarenteed to grant a medical redshirt. There is a lot of documentation and doctor reports and signiture's that must be looked over in a "trial" type of situation. The sports medicine staff usually has a good idea of what injuries are sure fire to granted and which ones are not. To my knowledge Sealey has had no surgery and has played games in November, December, and February, only missing games in January. It is possible his injury is not bad enough to be granted a medical redshirt. It is possible that none of the above is the case in this situation.

Bad enough not to play but not bad enough to be redshirted? Interesting.

If I'm not mistaken, the original schedules that were announced in August or September had the men's game at 2 and the women's game at 4:30 yesterday. When the men's game was picked up by Time Warner Sports, it was moved to 6 and the women's game was moved to 2.hammb wrote:I don't know where the confusion was, but I thought the men's game was at 2 yesterday (maybe looked at the time from last week's game?)...
