Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
They should do a tournament. It would be a lot of fun.
Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
A legitimate option is a preseason *tournament that looks like this. Cincinnati and Dayton did it a few years back. The best teams would get buy (not bye) games and then play each other no matter the results of the previous games.
Game 1
Ohio State vs Wright State (Value City Arena)
Dayton vs Toledo (UD Arena)
Cincy vs Akron (5/3 Arena)
Xavier vs Cleveland State (Cintas Center)
Game 2
Ohio State vs Toledo (Value City Arena)
Dayton vs Wright State (UD Arena)
Cincy vs Cleveland State (5/3 Arena)
Xavier vs Akron (Cintas Center)
Game 3 - All games at Nationwide Arena
Afternoon games
Wright State vs Akron Game 1
Cleveland State vs Toledo Game 2
Evening Games
Dayton vs Xavier - Game 1
Ohio State vs Cincy - Game 2
You could mix or match however you want.

It would be great for the local economy...and generate interest statewide- no doubt.

Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
What if the wrong teams won? That's why it won't happen.
Eliminate OSU and the rest might be interested if there was a TV package or $ponsors with a payout. The whole event in downtown Columbus at Nationwide between Christmas and New Years.

Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
You're right It will never happen. Big Ten would not like the idea of OSU participating is such an event. Buckeye fans would probably not be too thrilled either knowing they would have trouble winning it every year. Keeping the mid-majors at arm's length has been their unspoken policy for years.
Wish they would help the rest of the state's D-1 programs out by playing football games at Miami, OU, BG, Tol, Kent and Akron along with Cincinnati. SAme for basketball. Never happen.

Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
It would never be a tournament. Schools aren't going to give up their 1 exempt tournament a year to play in Columbus.
While it's not all Ohio schools. This would be an awesome setup.
Double header in Columbus at Nationwide Arena. Sponsored by DP&L and AEP Energy. Wednesday, December 31st 2014. Early game Fox Sports Ohio. OSU game on Big Ten Network.
Wright State vs Ohio 7 PM
Dayton vs Ohio State 9:30 PM
Sellout. Would be a really tough ticket with Dayton, OSU, and OU's fan bases.
Double header in Cincinnati at 5/3 Arena. Sponsored by the Enquirer and P&G. Thursday, January 1st 2015. Games on CBS College Sports.
N. Kentucky vs Xavier 3 PM
Cincy vs Miami 5:30 PM
Sellout.
Double header in Cleveland at Gund Arena. Sponsored by Quicken Loans. Friday, January 2nd, 2015. Games on ESPNU.
Akron vs Cleveland State 7 PM
Kent State vs Youngstown State 9:30 PM
I would imagine this would draw close to 15,000.
On a smaller scale.
At the Huntington Center in Toledo. Sponsored by ? Saturday, January 3rd, 2015. Games on ESPNU.
BGSU vs Oakland 7 PM
Toledo vs Detroit 9:30 PM
Sellout.
All 13 Ohio D1 programs in action.
It's not just OSU that would kill such a tournament, Xavier, Dayton, and Cincy are the same way.
But, they may all give up a road game to play these type of games. You can mix and match games also. For instance UC may only play OSU. And Dayton and Xavier may agree to play, but, only on a neutral court.
Sad when you think about it. OSU and UC refuse to play in a home and home series. Dayton and Xavier have said they don't plan on playing each other. The crosstown shootout is in jeopardy of not being played. Dayton won't play WSU. Xavier and Dayton won't play OSU only in Columbus.

Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
Since when did Oakland and Detroit become OHIO Div. I schools. I must draw that state line somewhere in the middle of the Glass City if not to its southern edge. BG going to Cleveland with a competitive team vs. CSU and/or YSU would be nice for the large number of alums in that area when we have one of those teams that people follow although if we had a good team the MAC tourney should be a great draw as well.

Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
And you must not be very good at math. If you want 13 Ohio teams playing you can't have all Ohio teams. And BG wouldn't get 1,000 people in Cleveland for a regular season basketball game. Good team or not.FalconTurf wrote:Since when did Oakland and Detroit become OHIO Div. I schools. I must draw that state line somewhere in the middle of the Glass City if not to its southern edge. BG vs Youngstown in Cleveland could be played at a high school and not have a good crowd.
The whole thing is conjecture. Ohio State, Dayton, Xavier, and UC aren't going anywhere outside of their home arenas to play a MAC or Horizon League school. Unless one of those schools coaches is doing a favor for a friend.
Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
It would be fun if all 13 Ohio teams were in the Top 25 on a fairly regular basis, and would make runs in the NCAA. Until then HS gyms for the bottom feeders.

Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
My feeling is OSU will never participate leaving my math skills sharp at 13 - 1 = 12. Sorry I offended you such and display a lack of intellect. At the same time I have confidence that a quality team from BG will spark interest in NW and NE Ohio but unfortunately we have little recent evidence.Falcon137 wrote:And you must not be very good at math. Re: Ohio's Div. I Basketball Teams
The whole thing is a completely made up scenario, so all 13 Ohio teams could participate in an event. It's a completely unrealistic proposal.FalconTurf wrote:My feeling is OSU will never participate leaving my math skills sharp at 13 - 1 = 12. Obviously Ohio State wouldn't do it. They refuse to give UC (the #7 team in the country) a home and home. Cincinnati, Xavier, and Dayton refuse to play a road game without a return game. Cincinnati wouldn't go play a regular season game in Columbus if it was Duke they were playing, let alone Ohio. Xavier and Dayton might, if you told them they got to play Ohio State at Nationwide, not Akron or Kent.
Turning the page....anyone remember the Rock and Roll Shootout that Cleveland State hosted? It hosted some good ones. Ohio State lost to Cleveland State in the first year of the event. Kentucky beat Ohio State in 1996. I remember going in 1998 when Cleveland State beat Rhode Island when Rhody had Lamar Odom on a buzzer beater in the 1st game. The 2nd game Cincinnati (who was ranked, 3rd or 4th) beat Dayton by 2.
Are there anymore events that feature just a pair of games? I think everyone did away with them once all the exempt tournaments started. Everyone wants the extra games without giving up home games.
