Remember when BG didn't suck???
Remember when BG didn't suck???
It wasn't even that long ago that BG was a pretty damn good team. In 1997, 2000 and 2002 BG was one of the best teams in the MAC. And think about this for a minute - in a 6-year span from 1997 to 2002, BG had THREE different players named MAC Player of the Year (Antonio Daniels in 1997, Anthony Stacey in 2000 and Keith McLeod in 2002)! We went from a six-year run like that to a seven-year stretch we're on now with one damn winning season.

Re: Remember when BG didn't suck???
I remember the Dakich pre-WVU years fondly, except for getting the #1 seed in the MAC Tournament only to head home after the first game in Toledo. The Dakich Post-WVU years were the start of the slide down to abyss we are in now.

I tell ya what overall I thought Krebs was a pretty good AD. And at the time I was pretty thrilled to have Dan back. But talking to some players at the time the sentiment for him back was NOT positive. A couple of them told me that they felt betrayed and that he had bailed on them, and I don't think they ever bought into him again after that incident.
I think we can look back on it now and say that the re-hiring of Dakich was the knockout punch for the last 10 years of BG basketball. Hopefully the new coach can revive it.

I think that the re-hiring of Dakich knocked us on our ass, but the hiring of Orr put us flat on our back and down for the count.hammb wrote:I think we can look back on it now and say that the re-hiring of Dakich was the knockout punch for the last 10 years of BG basketball. And the contract extension and unwillingness to fire Orr with a brand new facility, buried the program 6 feet under.
Re: Remember when BG didn't suck???
Maybe we wil re-re-hire Dakich. It would getting him closer to Ann Arbor to watch his son and we might get a 2-for-1 with UM for a home game.

Everyone seems to have forgotten that Louie won 19 games and the regular season MAC title his second year here...I know I did until I looked it up...it's like the intervening years of bad coaching have erased it from our collective memories.
That and we got bounced by Akron in the semi's....

David Greer, Joe Faine, Marcus Newburn, Colin Irish, Bill Faine, David Jenkins, Lamar Jackson, John Flowers...early 80's teams had some of the best talent in the league. It's a shame we didn't do more with it...

Re: Remember when BG didn't suck???
I haven't forgotten Flipper. I still remember that team, basically Nate Miller put the team on his back and said we're going to win boys. Unfortunately, he couldn't replicate it in the tournament and we failed to even make the finals.
My recollection at the time was that I thought Orr was going to be the guy to right the sinking ship. However, I don't know that I was so convinced of it that we should have given him the extension we did. That team was pretty good, on the back of one solitary player, but it was a down year in the MAC, and we won the regular season title without being dominant in conference, and of course had our (now typical) losing record in out of conference play.
To me it's the recruiting philosophy, and inability to develop talent that has destroyed the Orr tenure. He has continually recruited decent athletes that are very raw, and those guys have not been able to improve under his tutelage. Honestly, other than Miller taking that step in his senior year, and now Richaun Holmes, I'm not sure there are any players that have really demonstrated ANY improvement after their time with Orr. Most notably the guard play has been awful every single year...

The key is to let them get a year under another coach so they can develop for a bit and then have them come here.
Re: Remember when BG didn't suck???
I certainly didn't forget about that season. It was with Dakich's veterans and what got Orr his contract extension.Flipper wrote:Everyone seems to have forgotten that Louie won 19 games and the regular season MAC title his second year here...I know I did until I looked it up...it's like the intervening years of bad coaching have erased it from our collective memories.

Re: Remember when BG didn't suck???
During the Anthony Stacey years the Falcons had two 20 win seasons (22-10 in 96-97 and 22-8 in 99-2000). They also had two MAC championships before there were divisions and two trips to the NIT tournament. The teams he played on also had a 45-6 home court record at Anderson Arena and the student support and crowds were unbelievable. They also had wins over Purdue and Nebraska and won the Rainbow classic at the University of Hawaii. Those teams played with great passion. Antonio Daniels, Keith McLeod, Jay Larranaga, Lenny Matella, Brandon Pardon, Brent Klassen, Kirk Cowan, and Demar Moore just to name a few.
Re: Remember when BG didn't suck???
The 08 09 run was fun, but the sense I had was 1) we could do far, far better and 2) Orr would take us there. I to this day maintain I was right on point 1.

Coaches leaving programs for "dream Jobs" is NEVER a good thing for the team left in the wake. It has plagued the MAC for decades. To some extent for that reason, great talent avoids this league like the Black Death .
We used to use it as a boasting point: Miami = Cradle of Coaches...... Now we know the score when they sign on. Takes some of the fun out of it.
TK will probably leave Toledo this coming year and they will start over.
