Simple answer is "long enough." He took over a program where losing had become "acceptable." It was for almost 15 years. How long does it take to undo that?Flipper wrote:How long do you give him then? If you keep a guy around who hasn't moved the needle much in four years you run the risk of creating an atmosphere where losing is the norm...it's acceptable.

I would give him 3-4 years when he has ALL of HIS recruits playing for him.pdt1081 wrote:Simple answer is "long enough." He took over a program where losing had become "acceptable." He has all his recruits on this team....bottom line he still has 3 years left on his contract, he isnt going anywhere. It just comes down to actually winning as oppossed to talking about winning. The rah rah press conferences and interviews are fine, but at some point you have to win. There isnt a team in the WCHA that has more resources than us, we even have a full time director of hockey operations, so go out and back up all the talk.

Re: Enough is Enough
In a perfect world...where you don't have a lame duck coach actually coaching (cf. Orr, Louis)...he'd either show substantial improvement in the next year or two at most or be gone. Yes, program was a mess when he took over but giving anyone 7-9 years to tread water before you pull the plug is nuts

Re: Enough is Enough
You guys do realize that we can still get home ice for the play offs, right?
Here are the possible ways, along with making the playoffs in general:

Geez.
Everyone needs to settle down and see how the season plays out before calling for the coach's head.

It's like they know that a good first pass on the breakout from a defenseman will almost always result in an odd-man rush against them - but they go in anyway and dare you to make that pass. All three of their goals were just grit and effort. That's a team any fan can be proud to support...they give all they've got."

Yep. And, the men's basketball team can still win the MAC tournament, go to the NCAA tournament, and win the national championship.Falcon Fanatic wrote:You guys do realize that we can still get home ice for the play offs, right?![]()

Not true. The senior class only has one of Bergeron's recruits on it, the rest are Willy's recruits. Wojtala de-committed from Miami and followed Bergeron here. The fifth year in a hockey coach's tenure is always the first year that he is coaching all of his own recruits.apollo wrote:He has all his recruits on this team....bottom line he still has 3 years left on his contract, he isnt going anywhere. And both scenarios happening together are still more likely than football winning a national championship. What's your point?footballguy51 wrote:Yep. Re: Enough is Enough
Here's an idea...have a winning season before you start talking about National titles. Jesus...I want to see hockey flourish here, but this nonsense about being "closest to a national title" is ridiculous given the lack of an above .500 season since...how long has it been now?
Gymnastics is closer to a national title any way...if they can hold onto their top 36 ranking they'll qualify for regionals.

Well if you want to get technical about it, most of Bergeron's success came because of one of Paluch/Williams recruits. Without Hammond standing on his head in the playoffs the last 3 years there would really be nothing on Bergeron's resume other than a bunch of bottom of the league finishes.BGFan wrote:Not true. Re: Enough is Enough
I was mistaken...kind of...hammer thrower Brooke Pleger is probably the one athlete closest to an NCAA championship at BG right now

Re: Enough is Enough
I made it out to the game Friday night and enjoyed seeing the win.
Glad to see the record of BG Hockey is better than what it has been but as a VERY casual fan I have to think a lot of that is due to the much lower level of competition than we're used to. I'm no hockey expert but the quality of our opponent this weekend didn't look even close to the type of team I was used to see playing against us. I realize that the CCHA dissolved and there was nothing we could do about that, but in this new conference I have to say that anything less than consistent championships is a big time disappointment for this program.
That said I do like the consistent year to year improvement we've seen under Bergeron so I do think another year with all of HIS players is warranted (as I thought it was for Louis Orr several years back). But in this conference? Anything less than a conference championship should be considered falling well below expectations next year.
And I say this as a total casual fan that doesn't watch more than 2-3 games a year. I used to follow the sport pretty closely when I was actually at BG, but it lost my interest with it's continued sucktitude, and it'll take a lot to get it back.

Re: Enough is Enough
The level of competition is the same as it was in the CCHA. Look at what the other former CCHA teams have done this season. Two or three years ago, a team like Bemidji would have been able to dominate BG. Same with pretty much any team in the WCHA this year, save for Huntsville. This team has come a long way. I think it's merely an optical illusion that the competition is weaker. The name recognition isn't there like in the past. Last season, a win over Michigan felt awesome because it was against Michigan. Never mind they really weren't that good last season. Go back to the CCHA, and this team finishes in 4th-6th place.
